is there a reason valdes goes by his surname?

a few! his actual first name is cariño (equivalent to being named darling/sweetheart/dear etc) and consciously he is kinda just shy about it sounding dorky/overfamiliar from strangers.

more subconsciously... it reminds him of his mom (Adora/Adoración) and well. he's got a lot of baggage where she is concerned, and feels uncomfortable thinking about their similarities. he picked up the habit from just being called his surname at his government job from people reading it off of his ID (he worked for basically an in-universe NASA equivalent, and their ID cards at least in the sixties usually just had surname printed on them)

on an even more subconscious/meta level it has to do with his keeping others at arms length, hiding behind an idealized projection of himself that doesn't hold up under any scrutiny, general habit of lying by ommission... cariño and valdes are different guys, ykwim

(i feel like I never call him this myself lol but he goes by nito for short as well!)
