30.06.17 Installation 2 - Putting My Work Up
The first thing I did was measure how much space to leave either side of my work. We realised that for my work and the peers either side of me’s work to look its best it should be equal distance between my work and their work. I think I learnt about the importance of working with peers and constantly questioning and bouncing ideas of of each others layouts.
I measured a straight spirit level line across the width I wanted to use and worked out the middle of my space. From this some of my peers held up my two posters so I could work out the distance best between each of them and where to be spaced apart. Comparing spaces and reflecting over what looked best. I then decided to pencil the corners as a reference. I also figured out I wanted my shelf at a low level so people could see the whole bottle and the bags.
I think what I found hard was making sure my work aligned and was evenly spaced as well as being the right height. Having help from my peers really allowed me to acquire skills of precise and consistent measuring and envisioning my work without it being there.
After making sure again that these corner lines were all spirit levelled, two of my peers helped me put my work up. Beth help the spirit level whilst I stuck my work on the wall and Eloise stood behind making sure it looked okay. I think all these skills are great to have and I have significantly developed my understanding of installing.
I feel that although the installing of my work was hard because of the precision needed for mathemtical proportions ect, I have really grown to understand their importance when installing work.

23.05.17 Installation 1 - Picking and Prepping my space
My required dimensions weren’t too hard to place as the only wall space I needed was for my three A2 posters and then for a shelf to sit underneath.
Speaking with Karl we discussed where everyone would be best placed on their requirements. We then worked out how to balance the room so that graphics and illustration were spread about. I think that this discussion was a really important part to collaboratively working together. I think that we worked well in resolving issues and understanding everyones ideas about what they wanted. For example my work and another student used a similar bold, curly type. Even though she was an illustrator and this was used as the title of her book and mine was on my posters, being placed side by side would still mean that we would almost look as if we were apart of the same project. We resolved this issue by moving my peers work across to the other side of the person she was originally next to, who’s work was drastically different.
Prepping the other elements for my space was fairly straight forward. I found a shelf of the perfect length which would fit my bottles and paper bags on. Next I must touch up the walls and repaint my shelf. I am feeling confident about the exhibition installation process and was pleased about resolving these issues.
I also decided that the element which was going to go in my milkshake bottles was watered down acrylic paint. I came to the conclusion that using real milk or making the milkshakes would be fine just for the private view but keeping it in the bottles for 3 weeks would not be very hygienic and would start to smell the room out. Also remaking the milkshakes and changing them each week would not be practical and would be expensive. So my best solution was watered down paint, which I would just have to shake every few days so it wouldn’t separate.

21.05.17 End of Project / The Hand In Reflection
I am really happy with the final outcome of milkshake brand. Not only this but the progress I have made throughout FMP and the skills and knowledge I have gained.
Visually and stylistically I think this project has really allowed me to develop and experiment with new techniques especially Adobe Illustrator. Previously I had not really gotten to grips with Illustrator but I think that the more and more I have used it it has made me become confident with it. I think that at first I struggled with using Photoshop but mainly Illustrator but due to experience from other projects and peer help it was a skill I feel I have acquired.
Tutorials to me also proved useful in forcing me to reflect throughout my project. In particular the group crit was helpful and pushed my project forward. I think this was because my peers were very honest and made me think about my work and how it was presented in ways I didn’t see. While marking and analysing others work it made me think about my own and how I could develop things I hadn’t thought about before.
Creating a brand and the project being self directed I think has really allowed me to grow as a Graphic Designer as I have acquired a level of independent self criticism and self sufficiency, along with new creative abilities.

19.05.17 Making of the bottles and Mock Up Paper Bags
When it came to printing I came to the conclusion that it was too expensive and would take too much time to get them printed with a company onto sticky paper so printing with ruth was my next option. It took a bit of time and patience but obviously no where near as much time as it would take to get printed professionally. I had to print off my labels with Ruth a few times as the colours didn’t seem to print out properly till we put the images into Photoshop - this meant I spent quite a lot of time printing when I thought it would take only a few minutes, so I had to re-think my time schedule a bit but I managed to stay on track. After much consideration I came to the conclusion that using spray mount was the best way to stick my labels to the bottle as this would keep the labels stuck down.
I had to cut the labels with two different scalpals and a ruler. I found this quite challenging especially cutting the round edges and the bottle top stickers and took some time to do but by taking it slow my labels came out perfectly fine. Even though they would of looked even neater and I wouldn't have to worry about sticking them down with glue if I printed them professionally, in the end, with the time I had this worked just as well.
I then went onto making mock ups of how I wanted my paper bags to look. I experimented with four different looks and came to the conclusion the bag with the logo and tape on as well as the logo and the flavours at the bottom where the best designs. I think this is because they add a bit more to the bag and brand than just placing the logo on and are also more child friendly and fun.

18.05.17 Final Advertising Posters
Below are my two final advertising posters that I will use in the exhibition. After spending a long time developing the poster ideas I came to the conclusion that these were the best two to go with my brand. Both show off what the brand is about - one with the different flavours and the other encouraging that is a calcium enriched brand with the milk bottles.
Without researching into other advertising posters, watching youtube videos about colour and typography, finding out about what colours children are attracted to and using my ‘Creating a Brand’ book, I don't think I would of captured or presented the posters in the right type of way. With this research I was able to realise that I needed to use minimal text with a bold typeface and that imagery is very important on advertising posters, so it was key to try get these pointers right.

17.05.17 Final Logo, Label and Bottle Top Stickers
Below are the final outcomes of my logo, labels and bottle top stickers. I am really pleased with the outcome of them as I feel I have achieved the look for a fun, colourful, calcium enriched milkshake brand for children, which has been done by bringing all the research I did together. I think the cow itself is a simple graphic logo which anyone could tell is a cow, which is especially important as it is aimed at children and imagery is the first thing they will look at. Adding the white pupils and white oval mouth has really captured the ‘mad cow’ idea but still looks professional and clean.

16.05.17 Advertising Ideas & Development
When it came to creating my advertising posters I had already decided I wanted to keep the same colour scheme, which I had used through out the brand. I also knew my slogan was going to be ‘Udderly Delicious’ from doing a questionnaire. From looking at my research I really liked the rumble jungle music poster because it was bold, used bright colours and used simple imagery with pattern, colour and minimal text to attract their particular audience, which is what I wanted to do.
I experimented with many different ways I could present my poster and where to place the imagery and the text. I have used a bold, curly typeface because from looking back at my typography research it states for posters a bold typeface will be needed if you want to catch the audiences eye as well as having minimal text. I also know I needed strong imagery especially as my product is aimed at children and imagery is more important to them than text. So by having the single slogan Udderly Delicious with just the brand name it shows what the brand is as well as what I’m trying to sell.

15.05.17 Finalising Bottle Label
When coming to finalising my bottle labels I had to take into account the colours, font and positioning. The bottle labels needed to follow the same idea of being fun, colourful and appealing to the child’s eye otherwise they will not sell or be picked off the shelves as well as trying to keep this theme through out the project.
I experimented with many fonts and the positioning of the text and came to the conclusion that the original font used for the name Mad Cow should stay the same so it keeps the logo on the bottle. I decided to change the flavour and calcium enriched text to OPTIAnnouncement-Roman because it is clear, easy to read and flows well, as well as being fun along with the original Mad Cow font, which did not work small as it look squished and you couldn’t read it very well.
I also decided that the best positioning for the text was in a circular movement around the logo in the middle because it flowed with the circle based logo itself and didn’t look so disjointed if I were to have it underneath the cow. I wanted to present the flavour of the milkshake somehow on the bottle too. I did this by experimenting with the colour of the flavour and creating a band of it to go around the label. I tried changing the snout of the cow to the colour of the flavours as well as the band but decided this did not work as well as keeping the original cow logo and having one strip of colour because the label suddenly became to much. Instead I changed the snout colour for the bottle top stickers so you could also see what the flavour was on top of the bottle which makes the bottle practical and easy to tell which flavour it is which is important for kids as they are attracted to colour as researched from the articles I read and imagery is much more important than text for them.

15.05.17 Tutorial 4: Final Tutorial
This was my final tutorial with Karl so it mainly involved discussing the presentation of my FMP and thinking about what my labels will look like as well as the final 5 flavours I had come up with.
I liked the idea of having a simple space where I would have my advertising posters either side of my logo, all printed A2 with a shelf below holding my 5 bottles and 2-4 bags. Even though this is a simple and minimal set up I think it will look effective as in this case I think less is more because of the brand being bright, colourful and bold, it doesn’t need any extras and will show off my work best in this simple format.

12.05.17 Advertising and Bottle Talk
I put together an A1 mood/research board of selected images from my Pinterest board of advertising posters used for various companies and businesses. This was really helpful when it came to designing my own posters because I could see all the different ideas people had come up with in front of me and I then just put together what research I had done into looking at what colours children are drawn to as well as what colours work together and certain types that should and shouldn't be used when creating a poster. Without collecting all this research and piecing it together it would of been a lot harder to create a poster that attracts children and what makes a good advertising poster.
Tumblr media
Today I finally managed to have a chat with David about what would be best with making my bottle. He came to the conclusion with the amount of time I had left and the easiest way of making it would be to use a bottle shape already in the shops and produce a mould of that, as making it from scratch is too difficult and would take to much time. After finding this out I then talked to Karl about the option I had and we both came to the conclusion that there is no point in making a bottle which is already made. It would become pointless in making the bottle as I am not making it from scratch myself and I had also sourced a perfectly good bottle from Flying Tiger (below far right) and my discipline is graphic design not 3D so I should be focusing and putting my time into that. This means I will have a lot more time on the designing aspect, which is very important as a child won’t pick up the bottle if the graphics on it isn’t visually exciting and appealing to them. I have now saved 3-4 days of next week to do as much designing as possible instead of making 5 bottles.

I looked into different advertising posters on Pinterest and a collected a range of posters that I liked and thought could be relevant to my project. I wanted some further research into advertising to help me expand my knowledge of what makes a good advertising poster. From pinning a range of posters and from doing research into what colours appeal to children I know a bright colourful poster is the way forward, however I will need to be careful when choosing colours as from my colour research, colours like green and red in a poster with text should never be used as you can’t read it well and the poster will not have any stand out qualities about it.

Bottle Shape Drawing Ideas
Before seeing David, I made sure that I had experimented with different ways of how my bottle could look and then thought about practicality, costing and how hard it would be to make a certain bottle with the equipment we had. I tried various ways a bottle could look and be fun for kids, I really liked some of the udder influenced bottle drawings I did as they are very different to anything out there but in reality this would not be possible to make in the 3D workshop and would be very costly.

11.05.17 Finalising Logo
When it came to deciding the final logo I was really stuck between two logos I had created and could not decide at all which one to develop further. I decided to do a survey with both the logos on asking people which logo they thought would be best for my calcium enriched milkshakes aimed at children.
It came to the conclusion that the first logo was better for what I was producing as a lot of people said they chose this one because they thought it would work better as it is aimed at children. This was really helpful and overcame my pause in the project. The reason why I think many people saw this logo as more appropriate as it is a very simple design which children will recognise instantly, that it is a cow.
Tumblr media
I then carried on with logo development. Below is my final logo design. I thought the cow needed to look slightly more mad as my name for the brand is Mad Cow, so I managed to make small adjustments by adding two white circles into its eyes and adding an open mouth, instantly making the cow look more mad but still child friendly. Using these bright pastel colours, I know they will attract children because after reading my two articles on what colours children like, they fit into this well.
I am really happy with the outcome of my logo even though it took quite a bit of time to do, but the time was needed to come out with the best possible logo as this is a big part of my project and brand. Now I can figure out my label and advertising for my brand.

10.05.17 Logo Development using Illustrator
Today I have achieved creating many different logo ideas using 8 of the initial logos and taking them onto illustrator. I learnt some new skills on illustrator and I looked at changing the colour, the font and different shapes I could use within each of the logos.
Before I really didn't want to use Illustrator as I’m not a pro at it but once I figured out how to image trace and change the colours and fonts etc, I started to like how I could make my logos look a lot better from the original drawings I produced. Doing the development for these logos has taken two days to do but i’m okay with that time spent as the logo is one of the biggest parts to my project and brand and I needed to get it right, so it was time well spent.
I managed to keep to my colour scheme that I created myself and tried out many different combinations for each logo. I also tried out more than one font on each logo to try see which fonts worked best with which logo. I am really happy with the outcome of these logo experimentations and a lot happier now they are stuck down in my sketchbook and presented on an A1 sheet and shows i’ve done more work than I thought.

09.05.17 Tutorial 3
This morning I had my third tutorial with Karl. So far I have managed to keep to my weekly time plan and Karl also agrees that at this stage I am still on track. We discussed my development on my logo designs and it was nice to hear that he was as pleased as I was with them but now needed to narrow it down to a final logo.
We also discussed about flavours for my milkshakes as well as what is going on with the bottle. Because David, the 3D guy, has been so busy with the 3rd year fine art show I haven’t been able to have a proper conversation to whether it is possible to make my bottle or not. I have planned to now talk to him on Friday. I have started to collect other milkshake bottles incase I am not able to make my own and need a back up.
