He worked down at Gordo’s. He smelled like grease and oil and metal when he came home. Fingers blackened. He had shirts with his name embroidered on them. Curtis stitched in reds and whites and blues. I always thought that was the most amazing thing. A mark of a great man, to have your name etched onto your shirt. He let me go with him sometimes. He showed me how to change the oil when I was three. How to change a tire when I was four. How to rebuild an engine for a 1957 Chevy Bel Air Coupe when I was nine. Those days I would come home smelling of grease and oil and metal and I would dream late at night of having a shirt with my name embroidered on it. Oxnard, it would say. Or maybe just Ox.

Just reached the part where Joe, Gordo, Carter and Kelly come back again and I just LOVE love love the implications of the dialogue. Like Ox and Joe are repeating conversations they’ve had before. And the context of the before!!!! Like young Ox feels that he struggles to communicate. Almost every interaction we see him have with another person before he meets Joe, he mentions this. But it’s not a thought he has in that meeting. He’s not worried about talking too slow or not enough or saying the wrong thing. And, before those three years, talking to Joe, sharing with Joe, is not something Ox seems to struggle with. Even when he is upset with him before the Bennett Boy Brigade (and Gordo) leave, he said what was on his mind. And before Ox, Joe didn’t talk because he was lost within himself. Then the circumstances that caused him to withdraw, to shut down the first time repeat themselves and instead of turning to the people who helped him the first time, he follows the monster in the hopes of revenge and it happens again. He stops talking. And now they are back. And Joe is repeating the first conversation they ever had because he’s trying to recreate that moment. He’s trying to remember who he is, what it’s all for. And Ox is repeating their first conversation because, for the first time, he doesn’t know what to say to Joe.

Neopets' map is so nostalgic, I wanted to make it a little more vintage, just for fun hehe When I was 11, I asked my parents for a tablet so I could draw Neopets digitally and now I work with drawings and games 🥺 Thank you, neopets!
