𝐈𝐃 :      𝚆𝙷𝙸𝚃𝙴 ,  𝙰𝙻𝙸𝙲𝙴.

Distance.   She   kept   her   distance   from   James   Bucky,   not   just   because   she   assumed   he   wouldn’t   want   her   to   invade   his   bubble,   but   because   Alice   gave   everyone   distance.   She   had   no   choice   in   the   matter.   One   accidental   brush   of   physical   contact   for   a   moment   too   long,   and   the   other   would   undoubtedly   perish.   She   wasn’t   willing   to   take   that   risk,   and   she   never   did   bother   to   ask   anyone’s   preference   because…   Really,   who   in   their   right   mind   would   want   to   risk   sudden   death?   So   she   unspokenly   gave   the   man   three   feet   of   distance   like   she   always   did,   holding   the   bloodied   white   tee   shirt   in   her   hands.

She   didn’t   bother   to   scan   and   inspect   for   more   than   three   seconds   before   looking   up   at   the   man,   ❝   You   came   to   a   woman   for   a   blood   stain   issue   before   the   internet,   I’ll   give   you   that.   ❞   Alice   says   with   a   sigh.   Being   an   immortal   in   your   prime   was   fun   and   games   until   you   realized   that   you’d   be   getting   a   regular   period   cycle   for   an   eternity.   She’d   learned   a   thing   or   two   over   the   years   about   cleaning   blood,   not   just   from   being   a   woman   (although   it   certainly   did   help),   but   from   her   background   with   the   Assassins   Guild.

❝   …   But   it’s   a   regular   white   tee   shirt,   Buck.   They’re   like   five   dollars   at   any   grocery   store,   you   can   even   get   a   four   pack   of   them.   ❞   She   tells   him   with   a   raised   brow.   Though   she   remembered   how   living   through   the   depression   probably   effected   people,   how   wasting   items   was   a   big   no-no,   Alice   was   long   passed   that.   She   assumed   Bucky   was   too,   but   perhaps   there   was   a   significance   to   this   particular   shirt.   It   didn’t   really   matter.   She   wouldn’t   lecture   him   any   further,   these   were   facts   he   already   knew.

❝   C’mon,   I’ll   show   you   how   to   get   the   stain   out.   ❞   She   finally   says,   sheepish   smile   now   on   her   face   before   leading   the   way   out   of   the   room.

                        𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭  𝐚𝐧𝐝  𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐝  𝐩𝐞𝐫  𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 ,  𝐡𝐞  𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭  𝐭𝐨  𝐡𝐞𝐫.          he’d  always  admired  how  his  mother  and  sister  seemed  to  be  able to  get  a  stain  out  of   everything ,   no  matter  the  culprit.  back  then ,  most  men  didn’t  care  to  get  their  hands  dirty  over  laundry.  they  called  it  a  woman’s work        (  which ,  he  loathed  the  concept  of  anything  ever  being  solely  ‘ a  woman’s  work ’  )        but  he  always  tried  to  help  the  women  in  his  life.  now  things  are  much ,  much  different.  but  for  the  better ,  he  thinks.  it’s  not  completely   abnormal   for  a  woman  to  have  equal  treatment  as  a  man ,  nor  is  it  for  a  man  to  be  expected  to  do  the  things  once  labeled  a  woman’s  so – called   ‘ sole  purpose ’  and  that  makes  him  hopeful.  hopeful  that  not  everything  in  this  crazy  world  is  so  bad.

                        but  when  he  brings  the  article  of  clothing  to  alice ,  she  understandably  doesn’t  know  the  significance  of  it.  she  tells  him  a  white  tee  can  be  bought  anywhere  in  bulk  and  cheaply  as  well ,  but  again —   she   doesn’t  know   what  the  shirt  means  to  him.  his  eyes  keep  low ,  avoiding  contact  with  her  own  as  she  insists  that  the  blood  soaked  shirt  would  be  easier  to  just  replace.        (  oh ,  if  only  it  were  so  easy  )

                        it  once  belonged  to  his  best  friend ,  the  only  man  who  had  shared  life  experience ,  knew  him  before  the  frigid  mantle  was  placed  on  him  and  he  wasn’t   entirely  himself.   it’s  the  last  thing  he  has  that  was  steve’s  and  he’s  kicking  himself  in  the  ass  for  being  oblivious  to  what  was  beneath  his  body  as  he  patched  his  wounds  from  an  encounter  earlier  in  the  day.  he’s  not  usually  so  careless ,  but  things  happen.  now  he  was  paying  the  price.

                        still ,  gaze  kept  to  the  floor  and  lips  sealed  while  she  spoke.  he  rubbed  the  pads  of  his  fingers  against  the  denim  on  his  legs  until  she  gave  in.  a  sort  of   sorrow   shows  on  his  face  like  he’d  lost  his  best  friend  all  over  again ,  but  the  expression  could  be  mistaken  for  a  foul  mood ,  which  prompts  words  to  finally  be  put  to  use.

                        “ thank  you.  it’s  just  that  uh ,  that  shirt  means  a  lot.  truth  be  told ,  it’s  the   last  thing   i  have  of  steve’s.  so . . .  you  see  why  i’d  like  to  erase  my  mistakes  here  instead  of  just  replacing  it , ”        he  clears  his  throat  and  offers  her  a  smile ,  finally  bringing  his  eyes  to  hers.        “ i  mean  that ,  alice.   thank  you.   it  might  not  seem  like  much ,  but  it  means  the  world  t’  me. ”
