Project 25: City Flags
As most of you know, I’m Puerto Rican. My family is from Ponce, Puerto Rico, also known as “La Perla del Sur.” I grew up with this flag and knowledge of the town. The flag breaks a lot of vexillological rules but one thing it’s good on is the color usage.
Ponce is surrounded by 5 other towns. In the historic district of Ponce there’s an old fire house known as “Parque de Bombas.” It’s iconic red and black striping is very unique to the building because it dates back to the 1800s. The same colors adorn the flag. Hence, on the “Los Bomberos” iteration, there are 5 stripes.
For whatever reason, Ponce’s symbol or mascot is a lion. We have a basketball team known as the Ponce Leones and there’s probably like 1238 families with that last name.
I had a lot of fun listening to Roman Mars and reading about the history of Ponce. Hope y’all enjoy!!
