Drawing People: The Human Figure in Contemporary Art New release! Drawing People is the year’s best survey of contemporary figurative drawing and an essential guide to the latest developments in the field. An important teaching tool, Drawing People features work by 70 of today’s most compelling international artists, including: Francis Alÿs, Charles Avery, Louise Bourgeois, Francesco Clemente, Adam Dant, Marlene Dumas, Dr. Lakra, Paul McCarthy, Nalini Malani, Wangechi Mutu, Raymond Pettibon, Rosemarie Trockel, Tal R, Marcel Dzama, Barry McGee, Amy Sillman and Kara Walker, among many others. The act of drawing has long been considered the foundation of an artistic education, and the life class essential to the formation of an artist’s style and technique. Yet in the contemporary art world drawing is increasingly regarded as a medium in its own right, and the figure as a subject for ongoing exploration well beyond the sketchbook. Drawing People is a thoughtful and beautifully illustrated survey of the most compelling and inventive drawings of the human form being produced today by 70 artists from around the world. An introduction places the medium of drawing in its historical context, discussing its intersection with photography, painting, collage and illustration, as well as its ability to intimately express thought, personality and emotion. Five chapters—Body, Self, Personal Lives, Social Reality and Fictions—include short introductions outlining each theme, followed by generously illustrated profiles on individual artists exploring their style, approach to the medium and the ideas, narratives and inspirations that lie behind their mark-making. A selection of finely reproduced images highlights the latest work by each artist.Drawing People features a representative roster of artists working with pencil, ink, watercolor, charcoal and crayon. Together, their drawings and sketches, illustrations and animations bring to life one of the most creatively rich and emotionally powerful forms of art being made today. Rogert Malbert is head of Hayward Touring at the Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre, London. He has organized and co-curated many exhibitions, includingRhapsodies in Black: The Art of the Harlem Renaissance (1987), CoBrA (2003),The End of the Line: Attitudes in Drawing (2009), and Curiosity: Art and the Pleasures of Knowing (2013), and is responsible for an innovative series of artist-curated exhibitions. He has written catalogue essays on the work of Matta, Francisco Goya, Richard Wentworth, Marco Valdivia, Tacita Dean and others, and on a range of themes in contemporary art including the still life, graphic satire, fetishism and the carnivalesque. Malbert’s writing has also appeared in the Independent, Times Literary Supplement, The Art Newspaper and Modern Painters.

The Lower East Side is getting a french-touch as ‘Maison Kitsune’ joins the neighborhood on Rivington Street. Creative Directors, Gildas Loaëc and Masaya Kuroki, modeled the cozy 700-square-foot space after the retailers flagship store in Nomad and as tradition has it the store will be launching a ‘Maison Kitsune Rivington’ capsule collection featuring a grey cotton sweatshirt and the brands signature fox.
Welcome to the neighborhood, Maison!

Missy Elliot, The Face 1999
Tumblr media
"Her father threatened her with guns, her teachers graded her bottom of the class and the music industry told her she’d never make it. Then Missy Elliott changed the face of hip hop. And that was just for starters…"  Missy Elliott. The Face (June 1999)

Mayor of NYC Promises 1,500 Cheap Homes for Artists
Anyone who's trying to "make it big" in the US will no doubt look towards two of the county's major cities - Los Angeles or NYC. Unfortunately, due to the massive increase in housing prices and rents, the city is quickly become unaffordable for those who are trying to fulfil their dreams of a shoe-string budget. Looking to change that, the Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, has come up with an idea to help struggling artists. In a recent State of the City address, Blasio promised to build 1,500 cheap homes designed specifically for artists, claiming that he wanted to give back to a community that draws a huge number of tourists to the city each year. During the speech, he said:
"We know that New York is the city it is today in part because of the contributions from generations of artistic visionaries who at one point struggled to make ends meet. So we’ll provide 1,500 units of affordable live/work housing for the artists and musicians who make New York culture so vibrant … as well as 500 dedicated affordable work spaces for the cultural community."

FKA Twigs wants to change her name again
Linda and Laura Good, the duo known as The Twigs, are still none too pleased by the professional nomenclature of Tahlia Barnett, who formerly went by Twigs but now goes by FKA Twigs. Last year, theFADER cover star amended the "FKA" to her stage name after the duo turned down her offer to buy the handle for $15,000. Those three additional letters were not enough for the duo, however, so they're still claiming that Barnett is in violation of their trademark. "We have not agreed to this distinction," Laura Good told Billboard. "Since September 2013, [Barnett] has been on notice of her willful trademark violation."
"The only way I won't have to change my name is if they say that I don't have to. And they're not gonna say that," Barnett told Dazed last year. "I'm not angry, but I do feel sad about it. It'll be fine. I might call myself FKA tree trunk. Or FKA baby branches. Or IRL twigs." Our vote goes to FKA baby branches.

The Gorillaz are back!
Over the past several months, Damon Albarn has offered multiple hints that Gorillaz, the animated band helmed by himself and artist Jamie Hewllet, would be reuniting in the near future to work on a follow-up to the group's 2011 album The Fall. Today, Hewllet posted artwork of fictional band members Murdoc and Noodle to his Instagram, leading curious fans to speculate on whether a reunion was in the works. Hewlett responded to a fan's query, "Yes Gorillaz Returns". REVOLT's Bryce Segall originally reported the news.
Read our interview with Albarn here, and check out the rest of Hewlett's Gorillaz artwork below (that's his portrait of Murdoc above)
