I found a single Pacific Sardine (top) in our small catch of fresh Northern Anchovies (bottom) this morning! Marine scientists have found that the the two species have an inverse relationship when it comes to where they like to swim - Northern Anchovies tend to like cooler waters than the Pacific Sardine. . . . . Historically these fish have served as an important part of our coastal canning industries - however today they are used primarily for fish feed (for farmed fish), animal food, and bait. . . . This week the Pacific Fishery Management Council made the decision to continue the closure of the Pacific Sardine commercial fishery on our coasts until June 2018. We hope this effort will help these beautiful little fish repopulate so we can continue to enjoy them for generations to come! In the meantime fresh anchovies make a perfect alternative!
