Remixology 2 - Harnessing the Crowd
Fresh Media ReMixology is a series bringing people together to sample and share ideas in discussions lead by some of Vancouver's best and brightest media remixologists!
THIS MONTH'S TOPIC //
Harnessing The Crowd: The Evolving Crowdsourcing/Collaboration/OpenEverything Continuum
***In 2006 Wired Magazine writer Jeff Howe introduced the term crowdsourcing defining it as, "the act of taking a job traditionally performed by a designated agent (usually an employee) and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call.” Today, crowdsourcing and other  socially-driven, collaborative ways of working, have become increasingly popular.  In part, this connects to a genuine interest in involving the general public in the production of the work and then sharing ownership of the work with the public. It also highlights how thinking has changed, in a way that underlines the public’s appetite for contributing in social, creative, artistic and investigative tasks that connect to something larger than themselves.  This ethos has particularly changed the way the art and news community organizes and recognizes contributions. New technologies, particularly those from the free/open source software community (FOSS), have not only lowered the costs of collaboration, but fostered the spread of an “open everything” ethos that is being taken up by everyone from journalists, artists, educators, governments, to retailers.
WHEN and WHERE//
Wednesday October 6th at 6:30pm @ W2 Storyeum Salon, 151 West Cordova
And/or check out live video and live tweeting at http://www.livestream.com/freshmedia
WHY //
***Because inquiring minds need to discuss! Because connecting and collaborating matters. Because Vancouver needs a launch pad for media innovation, and we want you to be a part of it.
FULL AGENDA //
***Considering these 3 facets of the crowdsourcing/collaboration/openeverything continuum, Remixology 2 will feature local crowdsourcing innovators and experts, including Alfred Hermida (online news pioneer, professor of integrated journalism at the UBC), Leigh Christie (co-founder of eatART), and David Ascher (CEO of Mozilla Messaging). They will each talk briefly about their own experiences from their respective journalism, creative, and open web backgrounds.
***Following this, we'll open up to a broader dialogue that considers, "how can media makers and artists can harness the power of the crowd? What are some of the key intersections between technology, cultures of openness, and content production? While the boundaries and hierarchies of managing content have change dramatically; are there new gatekeepers?" This will be moderated by the brilliant Zoe Grams, a communications specialist from Curve Communications who provides marketing and public relations services to a range of not-for-profit, environmental, and art organizations.
***Finally, there will be an opportunity for participants to do a "collaborator's callout" where they do a 30 second introduction to a current or future project relevant to the group. The gathering will close with a collaboratory -  social/networking session including a cash bar and music.
TICKETS //
***$5 tickets. No one turned away for lack of funds. http://remixology2.eventbrite.com/
FYI - we sold out last time!

Fresh Media Olympics
A hybrid conference about how Social Media has Transformed the Olympic Story
Join Fresh Media and W2 at the W2 Culture + Media House on Monday, Feb 22 starting at 2pm for an afternoon of intellectual dialogue on the impact social media has had on the stories surrounding the Olympic games. The Winter Olympics and Paralympics are expected to draw 3 billion television and 70 million website viewers worldwide and will generate more wireless and social media-based content than any previous Olympics. With this explosion of citizen-generated media tools in the hands of Olympic fans and foes, as well as pervasive reporting by new media journalists and bloggers, will social media have its journalistic coming-out party this February?
The conference features a keynote from Andy Miah, author of ‘Genetically Modified Athletes’ (2004) and ‘A Digital Olympics: Digital Games, Ethics & Cultures’ (The MIT Press, 2010), and panels with senior journalists and industry watchers from the USA, UK, Canada, and elsewhere. An afternoon unconference program provides open space for participant led-workshops with an added emphasis on practice and a summary of the first Olympic week. The conference also brings people face-to-face for networking and sharing tips on theory, practice, legal and operations. W2 will webstream to reach viewers outside Vancouver. The day wraps with a Cinq à Sept reception and evening party with Vancouver artists and DJs.
Sure to sell-out, registration is free for Full Media Access passholders for the W2 Culture + Media House and involves a two-tiered paying system for others. This event is co-hosted by Fresh Media and W2.

The Fresh Media Unconference
On Saturday October 24, 2009, Fresh Media hosted a one-day forum to re-imagine media and celebrate innovation in the 21st century. We brought together media innovators, artists, technologists, citizens and the online community and provided an engaging, generative and interactive space where we could create media together. Our ultimate goal is to inspire, inform, motivate, share practices and skills and create visions and practices for moving media forward.
This forum and unconference-style event involved several elements, all happening at once in an exciting, collaborative cacophony of creation and idea-sharing.
1. Hands on how-to workshops (arts/ new media) - Inspiring participants to create their own new forms of media and information-sharing.
Workshops included: How-to DJ with The Funkhunters; Photography in a social media world with Tris Hussey, Blogging with Miss 604, Express yourself with Twitter with Raincoaster Media, and more from True North Media, Vito Levieux and Lupe Martinez, W2, etc.
2. Rapid Fire Showcases: A series of short presentations on innovative media/arts/tech projects, products or practices.
3. Media Arts Exhibition: An interactive art-sharing and collaboration space for all to exhibit projects and create new crowd-sourced pieces on the spot.
4. What is Media Now? - A live streamed interactive panel and discussion about media, journalism and art in the 21st century with some of media/journalism's biggest doers and thinkers.
Speakers included: Amber Mac, acclaimed new media journalist; Dave Brindle, innovative radio producer and host for TALK1410; Alden E. Habacon, manager of diversity initiatives CBC, founder of schema mag; Monica Hamburg, writer & social media evangelist, David Eaves, open data evangelist; etc.
5. Meet a Blogger corner - a series of featured bloggers will share their blog in a 'world-cafe' style format -- displaying new ideas, philosophies, design, and content -- for time slots of 15-30 minutes.
