One of the most important and must-visit pilgrimage towns in India by every south Indian in India is Guruvayur a sacred town in Thrissur district of Kerala.

History of Guruvayur

Before knowing about Guruvayur we must know about the sacred city called “Dwaraka” first, Lord Krishna owned a legendary city that got submerged in the sea by Ghandhari’s curse in Mahabharata. It is said that Lord Krishna called two sages to take the idol from the temple which was worshiped by queen Rukmini in Dwaraka and establish in the south while the city was being destroyed. legends state that lord Parasurama moved the sea to the west and formed the region Kerala and suggested to establish the idol in it. The idol of Lord Krishna was brought by Guru Prahaspathi and Vayu Dev to Kerala and that’s why the city got the name Guru-vayu-r by merging their names and that idol is worshiped in Guruvayur temple.

Guruvayur Temple

Millions of devotees visit this royal temple every year and people often refer to this temple as “Bhooloka Vaikuntam”. The idol is 4 feet tall, even though the idol is not that much small, people consider him as Little Krishna. Guruvayoorappan is worshiped on the basis of the principals for the pooja return by Adi Sankarar and later Chennas Narayanan Namboodiri written those pooja routines in a formal Tantric way. The temple strictly follows the pooja routine without any compromise. Temple opens at 3 am and after the ucha pooja temple is closed between 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm, the darshan will last till night 9 every day. Entry is free for the devotees and they must follow a strict dress code in the temple, men can wear only dhotis and no shirts, ladies are allowed with saree or churidar. Guruvayur Ekadasi and Chembai Sangeetholsavam are the important festivals that are celebrated in the Guruvayur temple. The key point that we must note is though the temple is considered to be the holiest one for the vaishnavites, it is not in the list of 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu.

Weddings at Guruvayur

Marriages happening in Guruvayur are famous. People believe that the marriage that is happening in front of Lord Krishna brings all the fortune in their life and they will be out of all troubles. People get married every day in the Guruvayur temple, no matter whether it’s an on-season or off-season and people won’t even calculate muhurt. In the temple, there are three mandapams for conducting the marriage ceremony. Between 5 am to 1 pm weddings are performed even on busy days the timings are the same whereas the count may increase but the duration gets decreased, sometimes the marriage lasts for 2 to 3 minutes. A wedding that is happening in front of Guruvayurappan is the real blessing that they need.

St. Thomas Syro — Malabar Church

One of the oldest churches in India located in Palayur. It was established by St Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ in 52 AD. St. Thomas stayed on the Malabar coast for about 6 years. The church structure is a fusion of the Persian church plan with the architecture style of Hindu. In the 18th century, the church was destroyed in a fire during Tipu Sultan’s invasion of Kerala, later the Church was rebuilt. N no of devotees celebrates a popular festival “Palayur Mahatheerthadanam” in this church without any discrimination which lasts for two days.

This camp has 11.5 acres of land which currently accommodate about 58 elephants. Ramachandran, 82 years old elephant is the oldest one that is nurtured here. Gajapooja and Aanayoottu are the festivals observed for the elephants as an offering to Lord Ganapathy. The Elephants are treated with special Ayurveda care in the month of July every year.
