Project #3 Artist Statement
For this piece, I wanted to reflect on my own current experience with digital art. I feel that digital as a medium is endless in all the possibilities of how one can utilize it for their art. I wanted to show that though I’m new in the digital art realm--both metaphorically in the piece and literally as I incorporate simple and beginner uses of physical computing--I’m am motivated and inspired to engage in the vast universe of digital art.

Project #3
Work-In-Progress Post:
I spent the first week I worked on coming up with geometric fractal designs on illustrator. I drew them by creating lines and shapes and repeating them and rotating them into a design. I then outlined each line and merged all intersections to create a singular shape in Illustrator
The next week, I began to cut out the pieces out of wood using the laser cutter. I also started to shop for arduinos and motors during that time. The last few days, I mostly worked on how to power the motor with the arduino, though I started with a servo motor, I eventually ended up using a simple stepper motor.

I feel like hacktivism is a peculiar topic in that we usually associate hacking as a negative thing while activism as something that promotes actions for the greater good. We can look back to Anonymous’ recent take down of 20% of the dark web to show how hacking can indeed be used for good.

It’s humorous how the author talked of how longer articles are becoming harder for people to stay with while I was having trouble trying to get through this longer article; that was probably his intention though. Good article overall yet I feel the Kubrick reference didn’t really tie in well with how google is making us more “stupid” (maybe unfeeling?.. eh).

Project #2 Artist Statement
What I had in mind for this piece was to create a twitter bot manifested into physical form and address the continually blurring line between human and technology as well as their relationship to one another. When making my bot, I felt odd sentiments of attachment to this fake person I myself had created as well as an intense isolation and disconnect when it communicated and interacted with a sea of other bots coded by other people to act like themselves and handle their social media lives. It was an unsettling experience feeling like the only sentient being within a social media platform catering to, well, sentient beings. This sculpture piece is a visual representation of my experience of creating my twitter bot through both human and computer iconography coexisting in a singular form that invokes feelings of uncomfort, connection, and disconnection.

Project #2
Work-in-Progress post: 3/18-4/11/17
When I began my project, I started with creating a twitter bot as well as 3D modeling and gathering the physical components of my piece. The following week, I then made a video that would play on a display every time my twitter bot received a notification. The biggest obstacle for this project, however, was that coding. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to figure it out so instead the animation plays in an interval (that I manually set) that relates to the rate of notifications my bot receives every hour. The animation was traditionally animated via cells, edited in Photoshop and reedited with audio in Premiere. The audio was mixed in Audcacity and was a combination of physical computer and 3D printer noises as well as my own breathing. This project was pretty ambitious, requiring a lot of different software and parts to it. I ended up leaving out or revising a lot of things from my original plans but overall I’m pretty happy with the piece !

Project #1 Artist Statement
For this project, I wanted to evoke a dialogue of the relationship between nature and technology. I intended to bring up ideas of the imitation of nature, the manipulation of it and even appropriation of nature in accordance to humankind’s ambitions. To pair with this idea is the subtle sense of futility in preservation of nature with the existence of technology while maintaining the possible futility of technology imitating nature. I also wanted the piece to create underlying imagery of conflict and divide between nature and technology—that they are indeed not in one another’s realms of being. This piece to me is a modest, aesthetically-pleasing one that also embodies a largely prevalent topic of discussion for today’s society; I went about it in this more non-aggressive way to reflect certain mindsets in society toward the issue today.
