I firmly hope Takasugi grows up fast and retains his memories, but if he grows up fast, that shouldn't necessarily make him immortal I believe. I've been going through the manga for information on altana and found interesting examples of its effects.

We know the terminal was built on a dragon hole and is powered by the altana. The amanto's futuristic advanced tech and weapons are made possible because of such an energy.

Dragon holes are openings where altana spews out onto earth.

Before altana/ryuumaku was officially introduced though, there was an incident where a parasitic alien got loose at the terminal. By feeding off the terminal's power, it grew huge quickly.

The "huge amount of power" the terminal uses to send off ships is from altana, the planet's life energy and the key to all the high tech. Essentially, you could say the alien's relatively fast growth is because of altana once these details have been revealed.

We got more examples of the "miracles" of altana. Forests above the dragon holes became abnormally giant compared to the other trees, and people who bathed in springs above dragon holes have been cured of diseases.

Underground below the dragon holes, the altana splits off into branching rivers.

Dragon holes are all connected by the branching rivers beneath the earth. When Utsuro threw himself into the dragon hole and was swallowed and erased, it was like a drop of water returning to the ocean since he was a being originally born from the altana. He would naturally manifest out of a different dragon hole, body reformed and be revived.

When Gintoki found revived Shouyou, the monk said since they enshrined the dragon hole generations ago, they've witnessed many "strange phenomena".

When Shouyou came out of the dragon hole, he initially looked like a mass of meat that was mistaken for an animal carcass, but changed form within a few days. Perhaps Takasugi emerged the same way and he didn't attract attention until he looked like a baby. We were given so much detail about Shouyou getting reborn out of a dragon hole that it's natural to assume it happened in the same fashion for Shinsuke.

Since he got reborn from a dragon hole, maybe he'd have altana inside him however he looked when he emerged, and the altana causes him to develop and grow up relatively fast. Then the altana supply in him would run out when he's full grown and continue aging normally thereafter.

I know this isn't the exact same situation, but even immortals can run out of altana so that's where I got the idea of Shinsuke running out of altana when he finishes growing up at an accelerated rate.

Utsuro was away from Earth so he only had the altana that was inside him and couldn't connect to more. Regenerating his whole body depleted his altana.

Theoretically, if Shinsuke's original altana supply runs out and he continued aging normally, he wouldn't be an immortal now because he wouldn't have the connection and dependability on the altana and live forever. Despite being reborn from the altana, I don't think it would make him immortal because from my understanding, to be an immortal like Utsuro/Shouyou, you'd have to be originally born from the altana. The things Katsura and Sakamoto say in ch. 704 make me believe it's not the case with Takasugi.

Shouyou basically became a part of the altana again and took control of it to protect his students. Katsura said Takasugi was indeed swallowed by the altana but being reborn would be impossible because that "miracle" only happened because Utsuro was born from altana. But Sakamoto said everything has a reason for happening basically so he doesn't think them being saved was a "miracle". A teacher protecting his students can't be called a "miracle". It's just the way things are. A regular person wasn't supposed to be able to be reborn if they were swallowed by altana and would be gone forever. Other people got swallowed but Shinsuke is the only one who got reborn because it was Shouyou's will to save his students like he always wanted. And if Shouyou didn't want Shinsuke to die, then it better actually be the real him coming back after doing him this favor, since Shouyou had certain things happen when he got reborn from a dragon hole.

Even if Shinsuke isn't immortal, I think the altana could have temporary effects on him based on the examples I've found. Even Umibozu used the power from altana chrystals to cure baldness. That's a non-serious example but it doesn't surprise me it could be used like that. Altana seems to have properties such as rejuvenation and accelerated growth stimulation. I really can't feel better if Shinsuke came back in a slow regular way with possibly no memories. There's so much magical stuff in Gintama that it would be stupid if our Shinsuke didn't return in a surprising magical way. Sadaharu shrank to a state between life and death and Kagura struggled to find an answer to bring him back to normal for 2 years, but with the Yorozuya all together, he popped back to looking normal again. Or Tama "died" and seemed unrepairable for 2+ years, but in the last chapter, she woke up somehow. So can Shinsuke please grow up fast to look normal again and retain memories of himself? Because he shouldn't have had to die in the first place, always deserved a fulfilling life just the way he is, and doing something different would be a pointless waste of time considering Gintama's narrative and his character development. I'm begging for a little magic and for things to work out in the end.
