"   it's   fine   ,   no   worries.   "   he   simply   responds   ,   still   smiling   like   he's   forgotten   how   to   do   anything   else   with   his   face.   it's   a   little   strained   at   this   point   but   the   contact   of   her   hand   against   his   shoulder   seems   to   kick-start   his   brain   again   and   the   smile   finally   relaxes   on   his   face.   blue   eyes   drop   to   her   hand   and   back   up   to   her   ,   unsure   where   this   is   going   for   a   moment.   he   doesn't   respond   right   away   as   he   studies   her   face   for   a   couple   of   beats   before   he   merely   says   ,   "   okay.   "

it was that smile on his face. it was a smile that almost made any piece of anger in sophia's body vanish instantly. she didn't mean to be so short or rude to him; it wasn't normally like her. there was just so much on her plate that it just slipped out. she let out a sigh as the anger just melted away and shook her head. ‟ no... no i'm sorry. i didn't mean to sound so rude. ”

reaching out, she rested a tentative hand on his shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze. if she was being honest, she felt more embarrassed than anything. sophia always seemed to take on too many things at one time and then everything would build up and she stressed herself out. ‟ again i'm really sorry. i've just got a lot i'm dealing with. please — please stay. ”

calum   doesn't   realize   he's   holding   his   breath   until   the   emt   eddie   presses   on   a   spot   on   his   hand   that   sends   white   hot   pain   searing   through   his   arm   ,   momentarily   knocking   the   breath   out   of   him.   his   body   shifts   ,   wanting   to   pull   away   from   what   is   currently   causing   him   pain   (   eddie   )   but   logically   he   knows   better.   the   guy   is   just   doing   his   job   ,   after   all.   he   forces   a   nod   as   the   pain   subsides   and   returns   to   the   dull   ache   that   has   been   emanating   from   his   arm   since   the   injury   happened   less   than   an   hour   ago. 

he   watches   and   winces   as   the   emt   works   on   putting   on   the   makeshift   splint   around   his   hand   ,   trying   not   to   wince   too   much   from   his   broken   arm   being   handled.   he says   ,   "   that'd   be   great   ,   thanks   "   in   reference   to   the   pain   medicine   but   fumbles   on   responding   to   the   contact   question.   "   yeah   ,   uh.   .   .no   –   no   ,   it's   fine.   i'm   fine.   "   because   it's   easier   than   telling   this   stranger   that   the   nearest   family   or   friend   is   over   five   thousand   miles   away.

eddie offers a soft smile with a nod and reaches out to look over calums hand. he presses gently on specific points to make sure there isn't any additional damage before gently releasing the hand back. ‘unfortunately, i think it's broken but they will be able to CONFIRM IT AT THE HOSPITAL. i can get it splinted here that way we can keep it as immobile as possible and can get you some medication to help with the pain. ’

thankfully, he had what he needed inside his bag and was able to get the splint on rather quickly. turning back, he looked at calum with a brief smile. ‘ that's about all we can do until we get to the hospital. we can head out here now but is there anyone we should contact for you? would you like something for the pain? I have stuff in my bag that I can draw up quickly if needed. ’

"   i   can't   keep   your   voice   out   of   my   head.   "   his   gaze   is   lowered   as   he   speaks   ,   his   head   dipped   down   ,   shy-like.   almost   as   if   he's   afraid   he'll   be   too   intense   ,   too   soon.   or   that   she   won't   feel   the   same   at   all.

things   happen.   calum   nods   ,   his   thoughts   momentarily   flooding   his   brain   before   he   blinks   back   to   the   present.   this   was   supposed   to   be   his   weekend   with   sophie   but   at   the   last   moment   plans   had   been   changed.   as   if   calum   hadn't   been   preparing   for   his   daughter's   arrival   and   time   together   (   as   if   his   time   isn't   as   important   ).

shoulders   hunch   forward slightly   from   the   pain   ,   calum   still   holds   his   arm   close   to   his   chest.   dark   blue   eyes   drop   as   if   he's   already   forgotten   all   about   the   reason   the   paramedics   are   here.   thoughts   and   pain   are   beginning   to   catch   up   to   him   but   he   gives   eddie   a   nod   as   he   holds   it   out   the   best   he   can.   "   calum.   "   he   says   finally   ,   like   a   delayed   reaction.

eddie, his son chris, and his siblings needed to get away from the big city, so they took the leap across the pond. with his credentials, it was easy for him to take a few extra training courses to be able to CONTINUE THE SAME WORK he did in the states. it was an adjustment but everyone seemed to be settling in well. just like back in LA, as the station bell rang, he descended the stairs and got into the truck, before heading off to their first call of the day.

when they arrived and he climbed out, he was the first to approach the male, hazel eyes remained fixed as he explained what happened. something in his gut told him there was more to the story but he wasn't going to push it. ‘ don't worry about it, things happen. ’ he placed his bag on the table off to the side and reached in to put on a pair of exam gloves. ‘ is it alright if I check it over? i'm eddie by the way. ’

calum   opens   his   mouth   to   speak   but   when   the   woman   on   the   other   side   of   the   counter   continues   talking   ,   he   closes   it   ,   quickly   realizing   she   isn't   waiting   for   an   answer.   she   has   given   this   spiel   before   ,   it   seems   ,   by   the   way   the   words   easily   tumble   from   her   lips.   he's   trying   to   keep   track   of   everything   she's   telling   him   ,   weighing   the   pros   and   cons   of   what   his   daughter   will   think   of   the   place   and   if   it'll   be   worth   a   stay.   but   the   thing   is   ,   he's   short   on   cash   (   after   their   original   hotel   fell   through   )   and   there   aren't   many   options   for   him   to   choose   from.   and   besides   ,   sophie   isn't   addicted   to   phones   and   the   internet   like   her   peers   (   yet.   .   .something   calum   is   actually   proud   of   her   for   )   so   the   wifi   won't   be   an   issue.   he   could   be   the   cool   dad   and   let   her   watch   a   rated   r   movie   while   she's   on   vacation   with   him   ,   but   he   doesn't   really   see   that   happening.   fresh   muffins   and   cookies   though?   sophie   will   easily   be   sold   on   those.

Lily smiled. "Well how long are you planning on staying in town? The price will depend on that. Now if you books now for three nights I have give you a deal. $90 bucks, now listen I know it sounds cheap and you're thinking what's the catch? Well, the wifi is crap and we get about four good TV stations, but we do have VHS rentals. I recommend The Lost boys, but be kind and rewind. Also there's muffins fresh in the morning made by yours truly and cookies in the evening. There's coffee all day but I will say. I'm not the best at making it."

    "   uh.   .   .   "   calum's   head   dips   slightly   as   he   clears   his   throat   ,   hesitant.   a   part   of   him   wants   to   joke   about   not   even   saying   hello   first   but   the   other   part   of   him   wants   to   be   defensive   and   find   out   what   this   stranger   wants   before   he   responds.   the   man   doesn't   feel   like   a   threat   (   at   least   so   far   )   but   his   approach   feels   a   little   off   putting.   (   or   maybe   that's   just   him   and   the   dread   currently   sitting   in   the   pit   of   his   stomach   like   a   small   pebble   ,   as   if   he   expects something to   happen. )   he   gives   the   other   a   quick   look   over   ,   assessing   ,   before   deciding   to reply.   "   calum.   "   it's   not   a   question   ,   but   if   the   other   man   looks   (   REALLY   looks   )   into   his   eyes   ,   he'll   see   it   there.
