when english still came so confusingly to me back when we lived in boston, I was talking to a friend I had made pretty much nonverbally through our mutual interest in dinosaur figures. for some reason we were talking about hanboks, the traditional wear in korea known for their beautiful colors and silk fabric. she asked me what color my mother's hanbok was and I remember telling her that it was a color I cannot describe in words. I don't remember what prompted me to tell her this--was it because I actually did not remember the last time I saw my mother in a hanbok, because I didn't know how to describe the colors I saw in my head with the limited vocabulary I had back then, or because I deep down knew the colors that dyed the fabric were so magnificent that even if I knew the right words I wouldn't be able to do them justice? I must say I'm not any better equipped today to describe the feelings some colors evoke. and am also sad that a common way to share drawings--taking photos of them--really doesn't do justice to the raw and exposed life that each pigment embodies on paper.
