SK8 THE INFINITY X LEMONADE MOUTH AU

This brain worm has been brewing for a week or so now. I imagined Kaoru singing “She’s So Gone” post-Ainosuke and it all spiraled from there. I’m working on what will either be a one shot of the detention scene + how all of them wound up there, or the first chapter of a full fic (though if I do that it’ll probably be a while before I write more chapters, so we’ll see how it goes). Either way, I wanted to make a post here explaining the AU.

Note: The adult characters have been aged down and Miya has been aged up slightly so they’re all in high school together. Miya is a first year, Reki and Langa are second years, and Hiromi, Kaoru, and Kojiro are third years (as are Ainosuke, Tadashi, Hiromi’s manager, and Oka, but they’re not the focus of this post).

Their birth order is as follows (using canon birthdays as reference): Miya, Reki, Kaoru, Langa (held back like canon), Hiromi, Kojiro

Their backstories and detention reasons are a mix of canon from Sk8, stuff taken from characters in Lemonade Mouth (each of them have elements from one or more characters, for example: Kaoru pretty heavily parallels Mo for overall plot, but Miya gets some elements of her story and Hiromi shares an instrument with her), and stuff I came up with in my own brain.

Bio: Raised with the mentality that nothing short of excellence is acceptable, whether it’s grades, debate club, or classical piano lessons, and lives in their successful older sister’s shadow. As a result, Miya feels a ton of pressure to succeed in everything he does. He struggles to make and keep friends, but masks their loneliness and stress by acting better than his peers, further isolating him. His only friend is his cat Mochi, who loves to sit on the desk while they study and nuzzle his computer until he gets treats. They use video games as an escape, though he has to hide this hobby from his parents, and copes unhealthily by compulsively tracking his meals (or often lack thereof) and calories. They just wish for once their parents would allow them to breathe and be the person he wants to be.

Reason for detention: Got frustrated with a teacher for wrongly correcting their answer to a question and called him stupid in front of the whole class.

Bio: Grew up in a home with an alcoholic father until he was twelve. One night, his father was driving drunk with him and his little sister Koyomi in the back and crashed into another car. After the accident, his father was arrested for driving while intoxicated and killing the other driver. Now four years later, his mom and grandmother won’t stop pressuring him to forgive the man and visit him in prison. Reki struggles heavily with his mental health, and often acts out at school— breaking dress code, graffitiing every surface he can, skateboarding on school grounds, cutting class— as a way to deal with all his emotions. He also loves making art, doing everything from doodling in his notebooks to painting on guitars and skate decks, and playing guitar riffs in his bedroom. If only he had someone to hang out with.

Reason for detention: Disrupted a school assembly just so he could get detention and avoid seeing his dad.

Bio: His parents work a lot and have neglected him the majority of his life, only paying attention whenever he gets in trouble. He was able to heal an entire lip piercing using a clear retainer without them noticing, taught himself guitar without them so much as batting an eye, and regularly sneaks out while they’re asleep. Despite his rebellious streak, he has perfect grades and attendance in school, as well as a programming hobby he seems to get better at every day. He’s known his best friend, Kojiro, since they were four, and often bickers with him to fuel their playful rivalry. As for his relationship… it’s complicated. He truly loves Ainosuke, he just wishes sometimes he’d listen more and handle him a little less roughly. Otherwise, he’s the perfect boyfriend, regardless of what Kojiro seems to think. He just doesn’t know him like Kaoru does.

Reason for detention: Ainosuke convinced him to skip class for the first time. He was disappointed and a bit angry to learn he was the only one of them to get punished for it.

Bio: Before his father passed away, Langa loved snowboarding and making music with him. Now that he’s gone, he hasn’t touch his board or a guitar in months. Following the man’s death, his mom packed them up and moved them back to Okinawa, over 9000 miles away from his home in Alberta. At his new school, he’s held back a year due to difficulty reading and writing in the local language. He’s never been able to make friends before, and he’s not about to get his hopes up this time around. At home, his elderly husky Nova keeps him company, often lying next to him now that she lacks the energy to run around like she used to. His one remaining hobby is writing songs, both as a way to cope, and to improve his Japanese. All he’s waiting for is the will to sing them again.

Reason for detention: Hid in a supply closet at lunch to avoid the stress of finding a place to sit. Was discovered after he tipped over a mop.

Bio: Grew up in a tight-knit family that cares deeply about each other, causing him to become something of a gentle giant. Following the sudden loss of his father’s job, Hiromi had to scramble to find work after school so he could help support his family. Luckily, his classmate, Hana, was able to help him get a job at the same flower shop she works at, which is perfect given his naturally green thumb. Between working late shifts together and sitting next to each other in class, he’s slowly developed a major crush on her. Unfortunately, he’s a bit shy and worries about whether or not she’ll see him in that way. Through embracing more of a hardcore persona to balance out his shyness, he hopes to find the confidence he needs to ask her out. Maybe even impress her with his sick bass skills.

Reason for detention: Got distracted by Hana during a science experiment and mixed the wrong chemicals together, causing a huge mess all over the teacher’s shoes.

Bio: His mom abandoned him when he was fourteen, leaving his dad alone to care for him and his two siblings. Kojiro helps out however he can when his dad’s working; making meals, putting his siblings to bed, getting groceries, helping with homework, teaching his baby sister to play his drums, reading manga with his younger brother. Anything to make them notice the loss a little less. He finds cooking relaxes him and makes him happy, especially seeing the joy on people’s faces when they eat his food. He’s deeply in love with his childhood best friend, Kaoru, and was a bit jealous when he started dating their new friend. However, his jealousy quickly turned to concern when he noticed how poorly Ainosuke treats him, always crossing boundaries and leaving “accidental” marks on him. He hopes he’s able to make Kaoru see reason before things get worse.

Reason for detention: During an argument with Kaoru in gym about Ainosuke, his friend got angry and threw a ball at him. While attempting to do the same, Kojiro missed his shot and hit the gym teacher in the head.
