Well, it had been 68 days since I last visited Manhattan so I went to check things out today on my bike. Highlights included chilling by the Hudson, riding through Central Park, stopping in Harlem to see Michael, @baiz11111 and Reese (at a distance) and eating gelato from il laboratorio del gelato. What a lovely day! For the past 5 years, I’ve been composting in NYC — first in Harlem and now in Brooklyn. I’ve been trying to do my best to keep up #sustainableliving practices during COVID-19 but due to the outbreak, @grownyc (who runs my go-to drop off spot at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket) closed down its food scrape drop-off sites in mid-March. So for the past month, @bhosley and I have just been stockpiling all our organic waste — first in the freezer, then in the fridge. I was at a loss for where to drop our compost until I remembered that our neighbors in Park Slope have curbside composting service. Happy to report that all six bags of compostable food waste made it into a bin today! Yay, score one for the planet! For others looking to/actively composting in NYC: This communal composting solution will only be available for two more weeks. I just read that the Department of Sanitation will be temporarily suspending curbside composting services starting on Monday, May 4, 2020 until further notice. Apparently, it’s been deemed a non-essential service and the resources will be diverted to emergency #covi̇d19 response efforts.
