Okay, Shakespeeps, I really want to know if more of you are watching/have watched The Diplomat, because its protagonists are named Hal and Kate (!) and they are as follows:
Hal: stupidly brave, possibly a genius, a wife-guy, sometimes also a terrible person, so charming that you almost don't notice when he's being an asshole, far more principled than he initially appears to be, and (to reiterate) profoundly devoted to his wife.
Kate: extremely competent, extremely intelligent, extremely cute but resents having this pointed out, deeply attached to but also ambivalent about her weird and charismatic husband, also unsure about her new and important political job in England.
So, even while the plot of the show does not closely follow either the events of the late Hundred Years' War or Shakespeare's Henry V... you can see why I am intrigued by The Parallels.™ Also, they're hot.

Okay watching The Diplomat on Netflix, and one thing I LOOVEEE about this show is its relationship to Kate's femininity, especially with clothing. She's clearly spent her entire career trying to be taken seriously in an incredibly male-dominated space. She's learned to dress seriously and rarely wears dresses to ensure she's understood as competent. She had to do that for her to get to the place she is in now.
BUT NOW, it means that if she wants to continue to climb in her career, she has to perform femininity in very specific ways. She has to wear a dress to the gala. She has to wear heels. To get to the heights she had to get to, she had to really lean away from feminity but now, to get any higher, she has to conform. It's such bullshit, but it's SO well done.

finished episode 6 of the diplomat and ooohhh boy. I feel like kate has this weird little corruption arc going on in how hal keeps pointing out that she has his job now (and he's the wife) and isn't it so much better? doesn't she like it? she could be so powerful, she could do so much good. and it's SO hot.

Oh to be Season 1 Scully who’s spent her entire academic career in male-dominated fields just to be assigned to a whackfuck FBI department with a partner who is so malewife she gets whiplash from trying to figure out how to fit this grown babygirl of a man into the template of all the men she’s worked with in the past.
Oh to expect to have to fight for respect with one’s partner only to be handed it on a golden platter.
Scully won the FBI partner lottery.
