John is not a monster, not a villain, not a Saint, but he did leave a 10 and a 6 year old alone for 4 days and got mad at the ten year old when things went sideways. He doesn't want his children to get hurt but he's been sending them on cases to fight vicious monsters and using them as bait. He trained them in self defence but didn't tell them anything about vampires or demons or almost any kind of monster so they couldn't really defend themselves. He gave his life for Dean but didn't so much as react when Sam called him to tell him Dean was dying. Allegedly he's the best hunter but he gets taken down in every fight and needs rescue. He's teary-eyed in almost every scene he's in but he had a fallout with almost everyone in his past. He loves his children but is prepared to kill one and abandon or send away the other if he thinks it's the right call. He seems to care a lot more about his dead wife but their marriage wasn't perfect until after she died.

actually you know what. the worst part of 1x12 faith, TO ME, is that it takes place immediately after Scarecrow, which is the episode where John finally nuts up and calls his kids. he’s not “missing” anymore. they know he’s out there. they know he’s fine! and that his phone works! when sam’s leaving him those messages saying dad please come dean’s dying, he knows that john’s getting them! because john said, ONE EPISODE PREVIOUSLY, that he was keeping up with them! and john made the decision (because there’s no way he could’ve known sam would find this faith healer) to continue on with his hunt - to prioritize his vengeance over his dying child.

my spn hot take is that victor henriksen is thee most wasted character in the entire series. like i know i made that post years ago but i still fully believe that. like. let’s discuss this objectively. you have a fucking fbi agent who is trying sososo hard to catch the winchesters. for like at least a season. and then he finally gets irrevocable proof that supernatural stuff is real. and he IMMEDIATELY FLIPS THE SCRIPT. he’s like oh shit. these guys are right. let’s listen to these guys. that’s fascinating. there’s soooo much you can do with that. AND THEN THEY KILL HIM LATER IN THE EPISODE MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!!!!!!
