sometimes i think about the fact that bylers put so much effort into analysing the show and every fine detail to read between the lines (like we are supposed to btw!!!) and (some) milkvans/ people who dislike byler just watch the show from a distant point of view, not actually looking at the details--and that's most likely why they don't see byler. yet we are called delusional! and so many of us are actually film students/ know how to analyse things! make it make sense!

It's so sad they didn't make it more obvious to the general audience that Will is a wedge between Mike and El in season 4. Like sure he's in every single scene between them except for their fight and the scene where El is literally being driven away from Mike. But they could have paralleled Will with a bulldozer, you know. Will could have taken those yellow and purple flowers and eaten them right in front of them, that would have been better. Like why didn't they have Will trail after Mike with the Eggos just to crouch on the bed behind him while he fought with El? We needed that. They could have even squeezed a line in there where El's like "Mike why do we have such terrible intimacy issues that we can't be alone together all season" and it just pans to Mike's perplexed face while Will breathes down his neck, I think that would have clarified it a bit more. But they didn't do that so I guess all we have is crumbs like Will standing directly behind Mike after he encourages him to profess his love to his girlfriend for the first time and this extremely ambiguous shot (make sure to squint):

My unpopular Mike opinion

I don't think Mike has internalized homophobia, and I don't think he's aware of his feelings for Will. I enjoy this idea in fanon but it doesn't seem to be what the show is going for, in my opinion. Like Finn and the Duffers have said, I see Mike as being completely oblivious, to all of it. He most likely suffers from compulsory heterosexuality and that's why he's always tried so hard to make it work with El, because he thinks that's just how it's supposed to be, this must be what he's feeling, right? (I'm also not ruling out the possibility that he did/does have romantic feelings for El, which would make it even more powerful when he chooses Will in the end). But he's never thought of Will in a romantic light before, he doesn't even know that's an option!

The other thing is that when it finally clicks for him, I don't want it to be this heavy, angsty thing. I want to see relief, joy. I want him to feel so relieved because he finally understands why things were always so difficult with El and why he was never able to balance El and Will in his life. Finally, everything makes sense. And I want him to feel so happy because he realizes he's in in love with his best friend and his best friend loves him back, and it's the best feeling in the world. No more queer pain (we've had enough of that with Will), give me queer joy! This would, in my opinion, be the most impactful story.

I feel like it’s so obvious that Robin is gonna have something to do with byler becoming canon?? Like the group we know of is Joyce, Mike, Will, Robin, and the kids, right? The other 3 make sense to be in that group because Mike is Holly’s sister, he and Joyce were vital in saving Will, Will has experience of being taken like Holly, Erica could very well be friends with Holly and the others…. But like why would Robin be there and not with the teens and Dustin?? She’s gotta be there for a reason and I NEEED it to be queer bonding and/or a pep talk.

Mike views himself as Will’s personal protector. He pulls Will away from their other friends when they try to comfort him. He puts his arm around Will’s shoulders twice in season 2, something that is recontextualized in season 4 as a romantic gesture from Mike when he re-enacts the same shit with El.

Except for the fact that this whole moment with El isn’t genuine, it isn’t real, it’s a fucking act they’re both putting on to try and appear “normal”. The way Will watches this in the background oh god I’m gonna kms. Mike is literally trying and failing so bad to project Will onto El, he’s trying to transfer his feelings for Will onto her and it doesn’t work and never has and never will! He does this repeatedly in every season. Here’s another parallel that makes me feel deranged

Mike understands the saying “love makes you crazy”. He then indirectly poses this to Will in season 2. It’s basically a coded way of asking if Will loves him. Will reciprocates (though he isn’t able to for the majority of season 2 due to what happens to him). They smile at each other with tears in their eyes and then look away like they’re ashamed of something.

In season 3, Mike is trying and failing to force himself to love El because he realized in season 2 that he was in love with Will. He then tries to intentionally recreate the “crazy together” moment he shared with Will, with El. He gets annoyed that she doesn’t understand what he’s saying. They don’t understand one another. They don’t love each other.

But you know who already confirmed they did love and understand one another?
