If you think you can’t, know that you won’t. Instill within yourself that you can, and know that you will. Every action begins with thought. Every work begins with contemplation. If the basis of our souls are weak, we cannot do anything. Strengthen your soul, strengthen your heart, and become connected to God. All of these supplications that have been taught to us, inviting everyone toward reliance on God, are to instill within us strength. You have a tremendous support—the support of God Himself, the center of all power. So why should you resort to anyone but Him? What would such a person who has God, be afraid of?
— Imam Khomeini (r)

Humans need consistent spiritual refinement and purification. Our hearts are prone to being contaminated with misplaced loves, misplaced hostilities, misplaced desires, misplaced attachments. Naturally this affects our thoughts and actions; it causes us to fall behind and lose our way. It traps us. Indeed, we become trapped. Therefore, we are in need of frequent purification of the soul.
“O God, fill my heart with love for You, with fear of losing the Way, with strong faith and belief in You, with an orientation towards You, and with awe of You and You alone”
— Imam Khamenei

By the morning sunlight, By the stillness of the night, Your Lord has neither abandoned you nor is He displeased with you. The Hereafter shall certainly be better for you than this life. Soon, your Nurturing Lord shall give you such that you will certainly be satisfied. Did He not find you orphaned, and sheltered you? Did He not find you lost, and guided you? Did He not find you in need, and enriched you?
— Holy Qur'ān, The Morning Hours {93}
