❝ Be quiet for a bit, okay? I'm getting a headache, ❞ as if to ensure his request was met, Nan Feng followed up by shoving a pastry—one of Yan YiMei's experiments filled with a cherry jam—into Fu Yao's still open mouth.

the truthful accounts about fu yao, which occasionally trickled out of conversation, reveal he is a good listener. attentive, efficient, clever. when nan feng requested his silence, he had been willing to concede. however, no matter what his relationship with nan feng was, receiving a mouthful of a pastry was not something fu yao would take lightly.
the pastry itself was light & airy, keeping its shape while flaking off in egg-coated delight. the decadence of the cherry reminded him of the royal gardens of home. sweet dreams made sweeter by its softness when fu yao bit down. it was perfect.
but when had perfection ever soothed general — a junior official from the palace of xuan zhen from their sense of injustice? perfection was just what accompanied the journey.
unwilling to relinquish the treat, fu yao listened. he was quiet.
he was quiet even when he started consistently nudging the other with his foot.

he waved his hand in the air & rolled his eyes at the “correction” nan feng made. ❝ i know you heard me, don’t go changing what i said. i’m going the same place as you, obviously. ❞
places not yet claimed by the disturbances of people were nan feng’s favorites when the day progressed too far. fu yao knew this very well. it wasn’t a distaste of the feasting company that drew him toward following — he had no preference — but it didn’t change the fact fu yao came for nan feng. not the feast or the junior officials or the disagreeable decor. for him.
everyone knew this & fu yao had no choice but to feel insulted nan feng was considering cutting the entertainment short for his esteemed guest.
❝ well? i don’t know where your room is, lead the way. ❞ he cleaned off any remnants of food as he impatiently waited.
