Self statement
As this class concludes, I feel like there has been a lot of thought into my art skills. Not only in the technical sense, but in a way of thinking differently. I have seen myself questioning more and seeing different approaches to thinks, I guess thinking beyond, or as many would say “thinking outside the box”.
It certainly has been a tough quick semester trying to juggle my personal life, my work life, family, school, and other things. But all of this has for sure been a challenge that has helped me see things differently, and try to view different approaches to many situations in my general life. During this semester, the works we have done have made me be just a bit more comfortable with simple things as presenting in front of a small audience, question others and myself, question many things that before I would not even think about. Even simple projects as the mirror displacement helps me push a little further on what I can do. I have to be honest and say that at the beginning these tasks seemed a bit weird to me as I am not always someone who is open to do “out of the norm” things, but as time progressed I felt the need to broaden my perspectives and I really have to thank this class and my classmates for this push in my artistic life, that not only works here but also in my everyday life.

Redo/undo + original Introduce yourself art piece.
Juan Franco
New Beginnings.
Mixed art materials displayed on a table
For this work I wanted to deconstruct the view of my first drawing. It was aimed to be a step back from what a drawing is and how it starts. I was conflicted on how to display this work in correlation to my original. This piece was supposed to show what my process in creating these type of projects is like. Although it did not do what I intended it was certainly a learning process. I tried also to do this into some sort of participative piece, in which the viewers were open to approach the sketchbooks and see different works, as well as perhaps drawing something on the one brand new sketch pad located in the middle. It did not go as planned as I had issued in conveying the message of this being able to be engaged with. I feel that although this did not happen it helps me see myself and take the opinions and suggestions from others, the critique did exactly what it was supposed to and helped me understand and put everything into perspective and learn for a future piece on how to achieve many of these seemingly good ideas. This piece at a certain level also aimed to talk about how drawing at times can be come something dreadful instead of a relaxing form of expression as sometimes as a creator I have deadlines and rules to follow. It also in a way tried to ask what a drawing is at its core. What makes something a drawing, or how we identify something as a drawing by doing the opposite, by not showing a drawing at all.

Context Alters Meaning: Contradictory
For this part of the project I chose these 5 contradictory places for my artwork. It is not somewhere where it would make really sense to be in nor is a place where you would easily find this type of things. I chose a very natural setting for most of them however they seem out of place and not as delicste as the art piece in my opinion evokes.

Context Alters Meaning: Associative
For this part of the project I chose these 5 associative places that to an extent could make sense to be around this art piece or it would make sense for this piece to be placed at. Places like my car. The trunk. A religious altar. a recycling bin. Or another piece of artwork. I chose these because for example thats where this piece has passed most of it's days. Traveling with me inside my car. This piece has a little bit of a biblical feeling. Something that would portray some sort of a religious portrait. A recycling bin I chose because of the materials, properties and possibilities of this piece. And the other piece of artwork I thought it could go well because it is an intricate form that goes along well with my piece.

Under the influence.
Untitled
Juan Franco
White marble and black granite attached by a thin metal rod.
Inspired by the works of Jonathan Borofsky, I made this piece to portray my own view of what I am capable of doing. I took reference from works such as the hammering man, the molecule man, and the man walking up to the sky works to put my own depiction of them into this work of mine. It talks about how I want sort of break free and be on my own, how I am looking into a take off of my life. I displayed this work coming just outside a cornered wall as a way of showing this as a breakthrough from the confinement. This is a take off what me as a human can do and achieve. As a beginning of something new as I am finishing school this semester. As how I am moving up in my job, being on my own, and the endless possibilities that are ahead of this new chapter.
