SKIN AND BONES 𝟏𝟐| 𝖋𝖎𝖑𝖑𝖎𝖓𝖌 𝖙𝖍𝖊𝖒 𝖎𝖓
Tumblr media
With shaky hands and her leg bouncing up and down nervously, Tessa sat between the three women in the Sons clubhouse, her gaze filled with uncertainty as she glanced at each of them, desperately trying to read their respective faces after she told them in detail why the attack on Tara had occurred.
"Wow, and I thought I had my fair share of exes who were crazy. But if this was a competition to see who had the worst ex, you won." Lyla was the first to speak up and immediately reached for Tessa's hand, surprising the young woman somewhat with the gesture.
"Well, I'm not proud of it", Tessa huffed, running her free hand through her straight hair. "On the other hand, I wouldn't have Sawyer without himᅳ but that's the only good thing that came out of this relationship."
"Yeah, I guess you could say that", Gemma huffed, rising from her chair to pace around next to the table, her hands on her hips. "We have to do something about this guy. He means danger and trouble, we don't need that right now. And no one treats us with such disrespect. Attacking the President's Old Lady?", the older woman asked with a snort, shaking her head at the stupidity of this guy. "Does he have a death wish?"
The dark-haired girl swallowed quietly, grateful for Lyla's support, whose hand squeezed hers gently, an understanding look in her blue eyes.
Tessa took a deep breath, searching for the right words. "It was just a warning, a message to prove to me that he has no problem hurting people I care about."
"How did he even find you?!" Gemma hissed. Not because she was angry, but because she was worried. "Tara could be dead, Tessa! This happens if you start working for the porn industry. You get famous and people start recognizing you. I bet he found you on a website, which means you literally lured him to us."
Tessa's gaze dropped, from the corner of her eye she glanced at Tara, who hasn't said anything on the subject yet. Didn't that say enough? Tara was probably thinking about the best words she could spit at her to show her that she didn't want anything to do with her anymore. The thing was that Tessa could even understand if Tara was angry and wanted distance.
"Gemma, stop it. She's been through enough, don't you think?" Tara warned gently, catching a confused yet grateful look from Tessa. With a small smile, Tara looked at her friend and reached for her free hand. "I know what you're going through, I also had an ex who used my friends to keep me smallᅳ and it was horrible, scary time in my life. I hope Happy knows about this Cal?"
"Yes, yes of course, I told him about it yesterday", Tessa assured the doctor, a wave of immense relief washing over her as Tara's warm gaze continued to rest on her and a satisfied hum vibrated through the brunette's throat. "So..does that mean you're not mad at me because you were attacked because of me?"
"Jesus, no, why should I, Tessa?" Tara quickly shook her head, almost hurt that Tessa thought of her that way. "Any person with common sense knows that you are just as much the victim. It's not your fault", putting emphasis on her last few words, Tara gave the matriarch an intense look. "It's not her fault her ex is in Charming now and stabbing her friends, Gem."
"I agree with Tara. Tessa did nothing wrong and most definitely she didn't lure him to us", Lyla chimed in, her shoulders straightened as she prepared to defend her friend. "The only person we should blame here is her psycho ex, because of whom she constantly has to live in fear."
"Then she should've put an end to it sooner", Gemma declared with a huff, stopping in her tracks before letting out a sigh. "He could hurt the kids, hurt the clubᅳ then what?"
Tessa's gaze wandered back and forth between her friends, speechless. It was hard to put into words how grateful she was for the support of both of them. "Thanks guys, you have no idea how much your support means to me."
Thanks to her friends, her self-esteem had regained some strength, and she looked at Gemma. "As they say, it's not my fuckin' fault, Gemma. Trust me, I feel horrible enough that he's here because of me now, but there's nothing I could've done about it", the young woman paused to take a deep breath before she continued, her brown eyes filled with determination. "And if you have a problem with me because of that now, I can't change it. But it was never my intention to put any of you in danger."
A grin formed on Gemma's lips as a proud look crossed her face as Tessa gave her a little lecture. There weren't many women willing to tell her, SAMCRO'S queen, what they thoughtᅳ apparently Tessa had balls and that showed strength, which Gemma admired.
"I don't have a problem with you, sweetie", Gemma winked before sitting back down, leaning back with her arms crossed. "But I have a problem with my family getting attacked and threatened."
"And that's okay, you have every right to be angry, but so am I", Tessa replied simply as she rubbed the tip of her nose. "But, and I say this with complete respect for you, don't be a bitch to me just because I have a history with the guy."
Tara and Lyla exchanged a look, the hint of a proud smile on their lips. To earn Gemma's respect, you simply had to prove to Gemma that you had as much willpower and fire inside you as the Queen herself. That was the way into Gemma's heartᅳ which Tara and Lyla also had to prove.
What can you say, it wasn't easy to prove yourself against Gemma. But if it happened, you gained Gemma's full respect.
"You know, baby." With her voice lowered, Gemma leaned over the table, grinning at Tessa. "I don't like people who tell me what I can do and what not, but I see myself in youᅳ I like that. We have a lot in common, that's good."
Not quite sure if this was actually such a good thing without meaning it to be offensive in any way, Tessa slowly raised the corner of her mouth. "Get used to it, because I'm not someone you can push aroundᅳ not anymore."
"And that's good", Gemma hummed as she placed her hands on top of Tessa's, patting them. "You have my full support when it comes to your ex, sweetheart, and I mean it. We women should stick together."
"Finally something meaningful coming out of your mouth", Tara teased her mother-in-law, her lips curled into a smile as Gemma just snorted but then immediately let out a laugh. "But I agree; we women have to stick together. That Cal guy", the name fell from Tara's tongue like poison. "He will regret that he ever stepped a foot inside Charming."
"Damn girl, you're turning me on", Lyla, fully impressed, looked at the doctor. Thanks to Tessa, Lyla and Tara also spent more time together. "I like you more and more."
With a smirk, Gemma rested her arm on the top rail of the chair. "Right? Our professional doctor is slowly becoming a real badass."
"Who says I can't be both?" Tara asked challengingly, a playful twinkle in her eyes.
"Exactly", Tessa shrugged with a grin. "I think she embodies both really well. A professional doctor in the hospital and a strong-willed mother and wife at home."
Tara threw her hands in the air, chuckling as a blush spread across her cheeks from all the compliments. "Okay, that's enough, you're making me blush."
It was moments like these, surrounded by her friends, that Tessa had never had before. Even during a troubling situation, while her ex was trying to hurt her newfound family and friends, there were brief moments when she was just being happy.
One more reason to banish Cal from her life.
Tara walked up to Jax as he was dismounting his bike, flashing her a wink with his infamous Teller grin. Her lips curled into a smile as she wrapped her arms around his neck after giving Chibs, who had come back with Jax, a quick hug.
"Hey babe." Jax' arm snaked around Tara's waist, pulling her close to him as he glanced around and waved at his son and Sawyer, whom he spotted by the swing set Tara had come from just a moment ago. "Are you watching them alone?"
"Yeah, Gemma had to get some things", Tara explained with a nod, removing one arm from his neck, adjusting the collar of his kutte. "And Happy picked Tessa up earlier, said he wanted to show her somethingᅳ then I offered that Sawyer could stay here."
"Okay", Jax said, nodding. A year ago, everything would never have worked out so harmoniously; Tara's dislike for his lifestyle, his club and the other women here had been too great. "So everything is going well between you and Tessa?"
"Yes, yes it does", Tara replied relatively quickly, smiling. "She's a few years younger than me, but somehow we just fit together. And Abel and Sawyer are already inseparable."
With a chuckle, the blonde could only agree. "Yeah, they are. Abel would love to play with him twenty four seven."
"He's already asked if Sawyer and him can have a sleepover", Tara told her husband, shaking her head in amusement. "I told them that Sawyer can spend the weekend at our place if it's okay for Tessa and you too."
"Sure, why not." As he pulled Tara into his side and walked towards the small office as Chibs and Juice joined the kids, his expression became a little more serious. "Chibs and I were with Hap earlier, he said he needed to talk to us."
Tara's head shot up. "So you already know about Tessa's ex?"
"I do." The topic leaving a bitter taste in his mouth, Jax let out a snort as he gently pushed his wife through the narrow door and pulled up his mother's chair, sitting down. "Sit down, babe."
With a deep sigh, Tara sank down onto the well-used couch behind her, her clasped hands tucked between her legs. She could feel Jax' intense gaze on her while he was just trying to figure out how she was doing.
"Jax, you can't be mad at her", Tara pleaded, yet her voice was firm and demanding as she reached for her husband's hand. "Remember Josh? The Fed killed you? He was..he was also using my friend's for his sick games, trying to suppress me."
"Hey", with a slight tilt to the side of his head, Jax closed his hands around Tara's. "Who says I'm mad at her, Tara? Neither Chibs nor I blame Tessa for what happened to youᅳ that's on that sick bastard."
Tara let out a relieved breath that she had held back. With a nod of her head, she shot Jax a small, grateful smile. "Thanks, Jax. Tessa feels shitty enough already. Gemma didn't really react supportive at first."
"Great." Sighing, Jax rubbed a hand over his face, smoothing out his beard. "What did my mom do this time?"
"Nothing too bad", Tara assured with a shrug. "But you know Gemma, of course she tried to find someone to blameᅳ you know how she is when it comes to her family, she's.."
"..she's going crazy", Jax finished the sentence for his wife with a sigh. Sometimes he could just shake his head when it came to his mother. "I hope she apologized."
The brunette made a quick gesture with her hand. "Well, sort of, in her own way. But apparently Tessa really left an impression on your momᅳ that's good."
"Has she?" The blonde raised an amused brow as he took both of his wife's hands in his, rubbing his thumbs over the back of her hands. "I think it's good that you've finally found a friend here, I mean it, babe. And I think Tessa needed that, too."
A frown crossed Tara's face as she thought about Jax' words, actually letting them sink in. "To be honest, that's exactly what I needed. A friend, a real one. Someone I can talk to who isn't like Gemmaᅳ no offense. And I found a friend in Tessa; and even in Lyla."
"No, I understand it." Jax tucked a strand of Tara's hair behind her ear, admiring her beauty. "I love you, you know that?"
"I love you too, Jax", the brunette whispered sincerely, her heart beating hard in her chest. That, moments like that, was what Tara had longed for when she came back to Charming four years ago. She just had to first realize that she couldn't change Jaxᅳ something she no longer wanted to do. "So, does that mean we're helping Tessa?"
"Of course we're going to help her", Jax spoke with determination. "Happy's coming over later so we can all sit down and discuss what happens next. So far only Chibs and I knowᅳ but until we figure something out, we'll all keep our eyes open. And hey", Jax took Tara's chin between his index finger and thumb. "No trips around town alone, okay? Even if you girls are together, you take Rat or a patched member with you, understand?"
"Good, she finally deserves some peaceᅳ the guy can't come near Sawyer, he seems unpredictable. He has to disappear, Jax, just like Josh back then", Tara literally pleaded. In her eyes, people like Cal who would even go as far and hurt children, were the real scum.
Her tense features softened, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "We're not stupid, Jax. Neither Tessa nor I nor Lyla want to risk anything. And we'll be extra careful when we have the kids with us."
"He will, babe, Happy will make sure of that. But we have to be smart", Jax explained to his wife, looking at her proudly as she didn't even argue with him but saw the danger herself. "Good. How are you? You got another appointment at St. Thomas about your wound?"
"I'm usually the last person to be a fan of violence, butᅳ" Tara took a deep breath, looking up at the ceiling before looking back into Jax' blue eyes. "But hurry up, find a way before something worse happens", she told the blonde, her voice filled with gentleness as she answered his next question. "I'm okay, the painkillers are doing what they're supposed to do. And no, not today, but tomorrow morning. Do you want to come with me?"
"Babe, listen to me", grabbing her hands again, Jax' gaze was full of seriousness. "Nothing will happen. All the Old Ladies and kids are always under observation by one of usᅳ you don't have to worry. And of course I wanna come with you."
"If you say so", Tara sighed softly, still feeling uneasy.
"Come here." After Jax got up, he offered her his hand when he realized that his wife was still skeptical, and helped her to her feet, carefully because of her wound. Then he loosely placed his arms around her shoulders to pull her in a comforting hug. "You, Abel and Thomas are safe. Tessa and Sawyer are also safe with Happy. Everything will be okay, Tara."
"I know. It's just..scary", the brunette murmured, her eyes closed as her forehead rested against Jax', rubbing their noses together.
Happy and Tessa exchanged a look, a smile on the latter's lips while Happy's face still looked stoic as always. But at the latest when Sawyer came running towards both of them and wrapped his short arms around one of Happy's and one of Tessa's legs, Happy also allowed his lips to curl into a smile.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you", the four-year-old exclaimed, his greenish eyes shining with joy. "You are the best!"
The little pit bull, the reason for Sawyer's joy, ran after the boy, wagging his tail as he circled around Sawyer's legs, waiting for someone to play with him.
"You gotta thank your mom, buddy", Happy croaked, ruffling the boy's hair. "She let me get you a dog."
"Well, you already had the dog and didn't really give me much of a choice", Tessa corrected with an amused chuckle, not the least bit annoyed by Happy's action. She fell in love with the new family member the moment Happy had shown her the pit bull. "But hey, buddy, that's Happy's dog too, not just yours, okay?"
"That's okay, we can share", the four-year-old explained with an eager nod, giving them the widest smile. Satisfied, Sawyer plopped down on the floor, a moment later his giggles filled the living room, a sound that lit up the entire room as the still small pit bull jumped onto his lap and licked his cheek. "That tickles!"
Tessa clicked her tongue, just enjoying the moment as she watched how happy her son was. When Happy's arm unexpectedly slipped around her waist, a smile crept onto her dark lips. With a comfortable sigh she leaned into his side.
"Thanks for that, Happy, for making him happy", she murmured, turning her head so that she could look up at him, noticing how relaxed he suddenly seemed. "You okay?"
His eyes met hers as he gave her a smile. "Yeah. The dog will keep you extra safe", he rasped, his features becoming harder again, more serious. "I want you to stay here, with me. The CPS Lady can't tell you where you have to live as long as Sawyer is safe and loved."
Surprised by the sudden offer, which Tessa secretly thought was pretty sweet and made her heart beat twice as fast, she now fully turned in his arms, his arm now encircling her entire waist.
"Are you serious?", she asked, still a little baffled, as if she was hallucinating.
"Yeah." Happy pushed her black hair back, revealing more of her pretty face, a warmth filling his chest as he looked into her brown eyes. "You're safer here."
"Is that the only reason?", she wanted to know, her voice barely a whisper.
The muscles in Happy's jaw twitched as he tried to force himself to tell her the real reason. Not that the reason he gave her was an excuse. Tessa and Sawyer were safer here with him, that was a fact. But that wasn't the only reason either.
"No", he said, shaking his head as he cupped Tessa's face in his hands, almost tentatively. "I want you around, you and Sawyer."
Tessa smiled, letting the tip of her nose ghost over his chin before lifting her chin slightly as Happy's hand slipped to the back of her neck, their lips just a few millimeters apart.
"I want that too", she whispered with the tiniest of smiles.
Just as she wanted to wrap her arm around his neck, wanting nothing more than to finally feel Happy's lips, Sawyer walked up and jumped up and down, full of excitement.
"Does he have a name yet?", he asked, giving the two of them his sweetest look. "Because I have a name for him!"
Happy just grumbled something incomprehensible under his breath as he once again didn't get the chance to finally kiss the woman who had been haunting his dreams for weeks. But instead of reacting annoyed, he placed a kiss on Tessa's forehead, pulled away from her and crouched down to scratch their dog behind his ear.
"No, he doesn't have a name yet", Happy assured the boy, smiling. "So about time he got one. What's your suggestion, buddy?"
"Baxter", Sawyer announced, chewing on his lip as he waited for an answer. "I like the name, do you?"
"Baxter", Happy repeated, studying the pit bull with the grey fur for a while before looking back at Sawyer. "That's a good name for him. You picked out the perfect name, buddy."
"I agree!" Sawyer beamed as Happy raised his hand to give him a high five. Super happy and proud of himself, Sawyer sat on his knees to be a little taller and gave Happy a high five.
"Is mom okay with that too?" With the slightest smirk, Happy looked up at the woman, who was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed and taking in the scene with a smile. And she, just standing there and doing nothing, looked, as always, fuckin' pretty.
"Yeah, I like it, really", she replied, smiling contentedly. "Baxter it is."
If it were like this every day, the world would be perfect and a much better place. That was all Tessa wantedᅳ her son to be happy, someone who cared about both of them and not just her, and a stable environment.

The Hunt
(final part here)
Rating: Explicit +18
Summary: When the creature you fear so much manages to escape containment, will he show you any mercy or take you without any regret?
Author's note: I intend to make this story with just two chapters. This is the first, the second will soon be available. Hope you like it!
English is not my first language.
Tumblr media
'ALERT: Specimen 375-6 is out of containment.
It's not training. All search and capture units were activated.
ALERT: Specimen 375-6 out of containment.'
You swallow hard as you read the warning message on your phone, the words falling over your body like a truck of bricks.
He had escaped.
The creature you knew and didn't know.
It was yet another top-secret government item, another non-human biological material captured and kept for research.
He stands out from the others, of course.
With his height, intimidating physique, and obvious intelligence, but you never actually approached his cell, only catching brief glimpses from afar as you did your job collecting and saving data from the scientists' research in the system.
But you always felt something strange in the rare moments you needed to approach the cell block he was in.
He kept to the back, using the shadows to stay hidden. And yet there was one thing that caught your attention, regardless of how dark the place was.
His eyes.
Two orange spheres, standing out like beacons in the night.
He remained basically the same every time you entered that part of the building. Sitting on the floor with his legs half bent and his wrists firmly restrained by chains resting on his knees, you couldn't make out the color of his scaly skin or his features in general, but the color of those eyes shone like neon lights in the darkness of the cell.
He looked at you, every time.
It was disturbingly intense. There were no blinking eyelids or shifting gazes, he stared at you with unwavering focus from the moment you entered the lab until the moment you left. His eyes…they shone with intelligence and superiority. Like he's just there because he wants to be there, not because he was captured. He owned everything he laid eyes on. The rational part of your brain screamed, 'Look away! Run away!' but those eyes seemed to want to capture your soul with each encounter.
All your co-workers had noticed the strange fixation that the creature seemed to have on you, but you always denied it, diverting the subject while saying it was just their imagination.
Deep down you knew it wasn't.
You saw the way his unsettling gaze settled on your form, felt the shiver run down your spine at his gaze and yet - even now, you could still feel that warm buzz inside at the memory of his burning gaze locked on you.
You could admit that it wasn't healthy to feel any level of curiosity towards a murderous monster who was obsessed with you. It was scary.
Your only consolation was that he was tightly contained with the best technologies the government could dispose of.
But he always seemed very calm to you, as if he were above all that. In a confident and almost arrogant way, in the way that only people who have a coldly calculated plan are.
Now he was free.
And you had a horrible feeling that you knew exactly who he was going after.
You quickly walk down the street towards your house. Your heart beats fast, the gentle breeze brushes your warm skin and your loose hair. The canopy of trees above and the few lights along the main path cast their shadow in the opposite direction as you walk faster and faster.
At the end of the street, your eyes notice movement, something large and slow, moving behind a row of parked cars. It's not completely unusual for pedestrians to be out so late - after all, you're here, right? - but your stomach drops a little, very consciously. Something instinctive warning you that it is smart to be afraid.
By the time your trajectory takes you past the line of dark vehicles, the street is once again empty and you allow the hairs on the back of your neck to rise with relief. It was probably just some insomniac suburbanite, taking out the trash or smoking a cigarette on the sidewalk.
Rows of closed windows stare at you blankly as you pass by, colonial houses with sagging porches and overgrown backyards, the residents of the peaceful neighborhood sleeping soundly within the comfort of their homes.
A noise breaks the silence: a loud, prolonged rumble, followed by an inhuman whine, an undeniably animal sound.
There's a single lamp behind you that puts an enormous silhouette into sharp relief, but you can still easily see his solid, dangerous structure.
Your knees threaten to give way, your throat burns as you try to take a deep breath, fear leaves you numb and clumsy in exactly the least desired way at the moment. You don't think, not really, you just act. Getting to the house across the street is like running a marathon, and raising your fists to knock on the door, swing the doorknob, requires a huge effort against the adrenaline that makes your hands shake uncontrollably. "Please help me!", your voice is hoarse, your throat is tight, it's not loud enough, no matter how much you want to scream - it's like you're trapped in a nightmare where no one can hear your screams for help. "Let me in, please, I-"
The door swings open under the weight of your fists, and you almost fall to your knees at the abrupt movement. You don't have time to think, to weigh whether this would be the smartest choice compared to the others, you don't know if he's clinging to your back or if there's still a safe distance between the two of you -
You just enter.
---
The realization of the terrible mistake you made dawns on you in the space of a few minutes of panting breaths.
The living room is empty, strangely enough, not that you really have time to think about it. A staircase appears in your field of vision, and your panicked animal brain sends you toward it, taking two steps at a time, crossing a long landing and climbing to a second floor, holding on to the railing like a wooden board salvation. "Someone please!" You manage to scream, "Please, someone! I'm being followed, call the police!"
The police couldn't help you, and if you were thinking clearly you would know that. No one, not even the army, could help you against this thing.
Yet there is no voice responding, no shuffling human movement, no clicking light. And then you see the paint cans, the tarp, the door off its hinges and against the opposite wall.
This house is under construction.
Nobody. No lights. Without help.
Spinning on your heel, you stagger back toward the stairs. But there is no more time. The door you left ajar in your moment of despair lets in a pale beam of moonlight through the unfinished wooden floor of the foyer, and you watch in mute horror as a shape fills it - huge, so tall that he has to lower his head past the doorframe, a brick wall of an alien assassin wearing a metallic mask. The soulless black holes of the visor, poor excuses for eyes, stare back at you.
Alone, in an empty and unfamiliar house. Your heart pounds in your chest, bile rising in your throat - you're trapped.
You know it. And he knows it too.
The creature walks with slow and determined steps towards the end of the stairs. You briefly, wildly consider waiting until he reaches the landing and then throwing yourself off the balcony. You can survive.
The thought makes you feel like a panicked rat, chewing on its own leg to get out of the trap.
Of course there's also the possibility that you'll break every bone in your body and die from sheer stupidity - which may be preferable to death by those sharp claws on his massive hands, but at least the latter you'll be able to escape. If you can keep your wits and your legs under you, you might be able to outwit the Predator. Evade the trap.
You almost want to laugh at your own delusions of salvation.
Your unsteady feet drag back without your eyes leaving him, but with every slow step you take back he takes one towards the stairs. The silver rays of the moon bathing his reptilian-looking skin, highlighting his entire body dyed in a singular tone of obsidian, with some lighter variations on the abdomen and in some internal points. Thick, long tendrils of 'hair' flow around the mask and over his broad shoulders, adorned with gold and silver metal beads. One of his hands - oh, huge and with long, sharp black claws - seems to want to reach out towards you, but the creature holds back for some reason, preferring to continue with the strange war of glances.
It seems that in his escape from the laboratory he recovered some of his things: in addition to the mask, he wore the wrist gauntlets, the net that covered his body, the strange piece of cloth wrapped around his hips decorated with bones and skulls, and the metallic protectors on the shins. The metallic chestplate and combi-stick weren't visible, you can't tell if he managed to recover it or not.
Regardless, he was infinitely more frightening now that you can see him outside of containment; big and broad, a solid wall of defined muscles. But it was his posture that unnerved you. The roll of his shoulders, the tension in his arms. The almost imperceptible flex of his calf muscles, as if he was preparing to jump - just waiting for a movement from you to attack.
He reaches out, this time to his own face, grabbing the metal there. Air pressure is released when the metal mask is removed.
You hold your breath.
His face was lighter than the rest of his body, a slightly grayish tone with some black streaks mixing with the dreadlock-like hair on his head, a few black barbs framing the sides of his face and along his elongated forehead. There were, of course, those flaming eyes you already knew. Instead of lips, he had four folded jaws with long teeth at the tip of each of them. Inside those jaws, you could see more of his teeth, smaller but more numerous and frighteningly sharp.
He moved his jaws as he climbed the stairs with purposeful slowness, his massive size making the stairs creak, strange clicks and rumbles emerging from his mouth.
You gasped in response to his face, shaky and scared, your backward steps continuing until your back hit the wall.
End of the line.
If you ran you would have to turn your back on him, and you couldn't do that. Never turn your back on a predator, everyone knew this rule.
It was as if you were in a horror movie or a nightmare, where you could only watch without any reaction as the monster approached. The predatory way he approached awakened the primitive instinct to flee, but your legs were shaking too much for that.
You pushed yourself further against the wall, even though there was no longer any space. It looked like he wouldn't stop walking, that he would simply knock you into the wall, but at the last second he pinned you against him and ice-cold wood at your back.
The air was knocked from you, hands flat against his chest instinctively as a way to get some distance. Even under the net, his skin was clearly much warmer and firmer than your own, smooth in some places and textured in others, the latter matching the gray patterns that spread across his extremities. He smelled mostly of moss and damp, like a forest after rain. But there was also a muffled current of pheromones, a slightly peppery scent that hit you like a tsunami.
In fact now that you felt it, it felt heavier and heavier by the second, as if he was exhaling on purpose. With each inhale, that smell seemed to make you a little more relaxed, a little more dizzy.
It took a few seconds for you to realize that he was even closer, hovering above you, his breath hot and wet, stirring your strands of hair. A gasp left your throat as his sharp jaws dove down, digging his nose or whatever it was into your hair to press into your neck - though you didn't know if that sound had been out of terror or something else. All you knew was that when he backed away, another low, animalistic growl resonated from deep in his chest, long and continuous and it took you a few awkward seconds to realize he was...purring? Purring like a cat? It was bizarre, but your own body began to uncoil, as if some force tied behind you sternum had pulled your back with him.
Your breathing is now labored for what seems like an entirely different reason. You can increasingly smell that intoxicating scent in the air and that, plus the mesmerizing purr, is making your eyes roll back slightly, a blurry haze taking over your thoughts. You can feel his sharp claws as they dig into your shirt and you, in turn, can't control the shudder in your body in response.
His scent is doing something to you, something that definitely shouldn't be happening. There's an overwhelming pressure blooming in your core, the beginnings of a dull ache that makes you clench your thighs to ease the tension. The saliva in your mouth comes down with difficulty as you swallow and lick your lips, stretching your neck to look into his eyes - god, you could barely reach the line below his chest with your head. What's happening with you? He is not human, he is not human. This is wrong.
"..." His jaws click and move, strange sounds fill the room with deep growls and hisses; he was talking, but you couldn't understand him. His eyes roam your face as he speaks his strange language, and his thumb gently wipes away a tear you hadn't even noticed falling from your eye.
You open your mouth to question, to scream for help, to beg for mercy, for anything...but nothing comes out.
His breath is hot as he bends his body until he's almost face to face with you, all predatory expression and clicking jaws, almost drooling on your skin. And then, as he forcing the words out of his depths, he says, “Mate.” He declares to you, slowly and gravely in a way that no human sound could ever be, but a little more understandable now.
You look at him in shock, not expecting a deep, English word to come out of his alien mouth. His inhuman eyes are bright enough that you clearly see the orange flames in the dim light of the night, slashed down the center with black, almost feline pupils that threaten to drag you inside.
Mate.
What the hell?
You blink slowly, the low rumble persisting as he purrs under your attention and you can tell he's trying very hard to appear less threatening to you. You bite your lip against a hysterical and completely untimely laugh that wants to escape, the tension of fear finally channeling into something different (something manic and traumatized) when he presses his broad forehead to yours in a frighteningly intimate gesture, tilting his head even further to rub your cheeks with those sharp jaws, snorting into your hair and sniffing at your neck.
The drag of the deadly fangs against your skin is exhilarating, in the worst way and you fear what is to come, a very animal and very instinctive part rooted in the most unconscious corner of your being, knows exactly what this creature is wanting from you. And the worst part, the most disturbing and embarrassing part of this realization, is that you don't know if you want to resist. Not with the way his scent and purrs are making your legs shaky and your mind fuzzy.
You're shaking, but it's not just from fear and perhaps the creature knows this, because he pulls back a little until he looks into your eyes - something very carnal and very primal vibrating almost visibly beneath that reptilian skin.
He slowly looks away from yours to fiddle with something on his wrist, and you feel like you can breathe once again without the oppressive weight of the orange orbs on you. He clicks the object on his arm for a few moments and then pulls a small metal disk out of it. It's no bigger than a small cell phone chip, and he balanced it on his fingertips.
Curious, you lean in a little. You just want to take a look at what he's doing; but before you even know what's happening, the giant puts his hand around your throat and pulls you towards him. You scream at the hostile action and try to fight him, but of course it's no use. With his strong hand, he can easily subdue you and move your head to the side, pressing the metal thing against the skin just behind your ear in a quick, burning blow.
You don't have time to react, much less to understand how he did that at that speed.
You just feel the effect.
It burns, like you're being branded, and you scream. Your whole head hurts, and for a second you wonder if he hit you against the wall in the process. It's a wrong and distorted feeling, like someone is tuning a radio inside your head, you hear screams and white noise echoing inside; so loud that you have to cover your ears with your hands, but that does little to decrease to the cacophony inside your mind.
When the alien releases you, you kneel on the ground, still writhing in discomfort and pain from the chaos in your head – and then, suddenly, everything stops. You're panting, your fingers covering your ears and your head between your knees, but when the noise quiets, you slowly look up. And although you are dizzy and a little disoriented, the presence of the creature hovering ominously above you is clear.
“W-what was that?” you mumble between quick breaths. "What the hell did you do to me!?"
The alien blinks slowly and tilts his head, jaws clicking before he responds. "Now we can talk."
Your eyes widen at the strange sound (but fluid and articulate, very different from just a few minutes ago), your stomach tightens and you pull your knees closer to your chest. “W-what?”
“It’s a translator,” he says. His voice is still very dark and booming, but his growls and clicks have somehow turned into words you can understand. “This allows your little ooman brain to understand my language.”
You swallow hard and feel the blood drain from your body. He was scary when you couldn't understand him, but he was even scarier when he could talk.
“Get up, little ooman,” he murmurs. “We should get to my ship. I don’t want to spend any more time on this miserable planet.”
You can't believe what you're hearing, everything is happening so fast. With shaky legs, you gape at him. “I…I don’t understand.”
The moment is interrupted by something when the alien turns his head towards the window of the house, the various dreads tubes rattling with the movement and his jaws opening in a low trill while a long, forked tongue at the tip comes out of his deadly-looking mouth. You gasp at the sight, but he doesn't look at you, using his own body in front of yours, as if he was instinctively hiding and protecting you from something you cannot see, feel or hear. The burgundy appendage is long and glistens with the moisture of his alien saliva, along its length there are some quivers and small barbs. He slowly waves the thing in the air, almost as if he's proving something. And then you understand.
He's smelling it.
Maybe he's even more snake-like than you thought, after all, catching scent particles in the air with his tongue.
The air is positively thick with eager anticipation, he's alert and ready and you feel it.
You don't have time to think about it too much, though. Because soon he is looking at you again, although there is no longer any sign of malice and hunger in his posture now. The way he lifts his colossal body until he's completely erect, swelling the already prominent muscles to appear more menacing, only speaks of a creature with a purpose.
"Oomans here. They must have some kind of tracker." He growls once more and clicks that gauntlet again, making you jerk back with a new wave of fear.
"Y-yes, all the containment units are after you now. It's only a matter of time before they find you and try to arrest you again. Y-you should go." You respond quietly and slowly, trying to make him understand every word.
"My ship is nearby." He grumbles sullenly. You try to control the wave of curiosity that the word 'ship' evokes in you. Seriously, how many humans have had the opportunity to see one up close? But of course you don't say anything, if you got out of this situation with your life it would be good enough. You would forget about this bizarre encounter and go on with your peaceful and boring life as if you had received the greatest gift of all.
But then he continues.
“You…” He covers your body with his once again, cornering you against the wall. Your eyes widen as he wraps a thick arm around your waist, pulling you into him. "You belong to me now, ooman. You'll come along."
You feel like you didn't get it right. “T-to space?”
He doesn't seem to want to entertain this conversation anymore and just grunts again.
It's like all the red flags go up in your mind at once.
"N-no! No, I can't, that's...I can't!"
But he doesn't listen to you, and you can't predict the sharp sting on your neck. It doesn't hurt like it used to, but he cradles your head with huge fingers almost tenderly as a sickening sensation wracks your body and makes you stagger. You feel weak, your body giving out as you babble out things that even you don't understand. Everything is getting dark and your little fingers are scratching his arms looking for support, your breathing is coming with difficulty and your eyes are unfocused.
"It's okay, mate, just give in...I'll take care of you..." He purrs, but you can barely hear him, your senses are fuzzy and lethargic and you know you're going to pass out.
The last thing you see before the darkness swallows you and the unknown can wrap its tentacles around you, are orange flames above you. Hot, consuming and scary.
And then there is nothing but emptiness.

Also I put my own spin on how Death collects souls, I hope yall like it! Mwah mwah mwah, please enjoy!
TW: Alcoholism, death(like, someone dying.)
Chapter one 🔽
Chapter Two: Deadly Reveal
That next morning, you enjoyed the peaceful bliss that was an empty mind in the first few seconds of waking up. No thoughts or worries, just the calmness of the usual first morning stretch.
. . .
Though your calves hurt more than usual.
Suddenly, within a split second, you remembered why, ruining the morning calm.
Mateo's morning interruption. The bar. Gabriella being the most freaked out you ever saw her. Death. His eyes. His voice. His poncho. The rain. The walk. His fur against your cheek as he carried you. His goodbye. It all came back like a movie being played 10 times the normal speed.
You rubbed your face with your hands, hoping to wipe away the tired feeling.
You felt a bit stupid, you would normally never let a stranger walk you home after only an hour of meeting. Let alone let them be close enough to carry you. You didn't even feel entirely comfortable with Mateo giving you a friendly pat and you've known him for five years.
You decided you'd blame it all on being tired from a double shift, not wanting any more overthinking to happen this morning. Though, in the back of your mind flashes of Death kept appearing while you got up and ready for the day.
You sat down at the dining table for what you thought was morning tea, however glancing at the clock revealed it was 1pm already. So you had to have slept in. You frowned, upset that your normal schedule was messed up for the second day in a row.
Deciding that you needed fresh air to soothe your mood, you took your tea to the front porch of your cottage and sat in the rocking chair placed neatly in front of a window.
The air smelled damp and earthy. Like him.
'. . . . I don't want to see you too soon.' His words replayed in your mind.
You wondered what that could've meant, worried that it means he won't be back anytime soon.
You then racked your brain on why you cared so much. You don't know him, there isn't a meaningful connection. There isn't any connection at all, he's a customer who was kind enough to lend you his poncho on your walk home. Nothing more.
Though even with all of that being true, you couldn't shake the want to see him again. You couldn't shake the memory of his eyes and smile, his voice, his smell. You couldn't shake him.
"Buenas tardes Y/N!" Diego's voice shattered your thought bubble...to your appreciation.
You saw his lanky figure try to approach your front yard, attempting not to slip in the mud.
"I would help you, but I think you might deserve to have a sore ass today." You laughed while getting up to help him anyways.
Thankfully, he was able to manage before you got to him. You really didn't want to get covered in mud.
"Sí, sí. Tienes razón (you're right.), I am an absolute lowlife," he chuckled while finally approaching you.
"But that's why I'm here now! I want to make it up to you. We can go out to town, everything you get is on me, promise." He gave you a wide smile.
Normally, you would rather spend your off time at home, learning a new hobby and tending to your small vegetable garden. You enjoyed living away from all the noise and movement of the town, you felt like you could breathe easy in your little cottage.
Simultaneously, however, today was different. You didn't want to be left alone with your thoughts, going back and forth on how you felt about Death. Thinking about if you'd see him again, or if you should even want to. A distraction from all that mental conflict would be nice.
"Ahh, well. I guess you can convince me to let you buy me breakfast at a café. Let me grab a jacket."
_________________________________________
The inner most section of town was only about a 20 minute walk from your home. To avoid any more shameful thoughts about your night with Death, you decided to interrogate Diego on the walk over.
You knew he had a drinking problem, it was evident when he showed up for work a bit woozy every now and then. He was also a lightweight, you felt bad that he was burdened with such a terrible combo.
"Soo, I thought you said you were gonna say no next time Mateo offered a shot or two..or five." you said carefully, not wanting to offend him.
Diego gave a deep sigh before responding.
"No is a hard word to find when drinks get mixed in...but I'm trying, that night will be my last relapse. Wouldn't want you covering for my sorry tail all the time otherwise you'd get sick of me." He laughed, trying to keep the mood light.
You nodded and asked him the normal run around questions. How have you been, done anything new, blah blah blah.
You focused hard on his rambling answers, not wanting to let your mind wander.
When you finally arrived to the café, Diego sped ahead of you, rushing to pull out a seat for you. You shook your head playfully at his over the top gesture.
You both looked over the menus, ordered and chatted about the mundane.
Completely unaware you were being watched from the moment you left your door.
Across the street, hidden in a shadowed alleyway stood Death, with an annoyed expression resting on his face.
He spent the night thinking about how to handle this situation and his irritating feelings on you.
He's already wasted too much time playing with you and even more time thinking about you. He's death. He has an eternal duty, and nowhere in his job description did it say he had time for...playthings.
But he was also honest with himself. He couldn't get you out of the sacred space that was his head.
His solution was to reveal to you that he really was death, the grim reaper, la muerte etc..then he could watch you flee in terror and be done with it all.
However, his plans were soiled by Diego whisking you away.
Something about Diego pissed Death off.
"¿Por qué estoy perdiendo el tiempo aquí?(Why am I wasting my time here?)" Death growled to himself before vanishing to go back to work. He figured he will settle this where it started, at the bar.
. . .
"Oooh, that looks good." Diego commented on the torrijas that arrived at your table.
Diego ordered just eggs and bacon, which he hardly took notice in as he kept his eyes trained on you.
"So, Gabi told me there was some creep at the bar last night? She said she left you with him and she feels bad about it, what's that all about?" he asked nonchalantly.
This was the last topic you wanted to talk about, however, he asked you so directly, there was no way to avoid it.
"I wouldn't say creep, I mean his looks were intimidating I guess? Well anyway, there wasn't any problems with him and I'm not upset with Gabi over it, I mean she takes customers I don't wanna deal with for me all the time so, we're even." you stared down at your food, feeling a bit guilty. Somehow, you felt like you were lying by not mentioning the full details.
"Well hopefully he won't show up to the party tonight cause I'd beat his a-"
"What party?" you interrupted Diego before he inflated his ego too much.
"Y/N, no seas estúpido (don't be stupid), it's the first of October. Maria always throws a party, it's her birthday month. We do this every year, how do you not remember by now."
"Ah damn, you're right...she's crazy, celebrating for a whole month sounds so tiring." you said while finishing up the last bit of your food.
"So hey, you skip the party every year..why not change it up and go this time? I'll be your party buddy and you can keep my drinking in check" he laughed, placing the money for the meal on the table.
Truthfully you normally weren't a party person. You had been to a handful of them and they usually end up with you sweating and hyperventilating in a bathroom stall, suffering from a panic attack.
But your encounter with Death did make you realize you must be seriously socially starved if a brisk walk with a stranger could make you feel so...flustered. You also came to the conclusion that maybe jumping back into the dating pool could be good for you. You hadn't had a romantic relationship since high school after all.
Finishing the last of your orange juice you answered Diego.
"Yeah alright, but promise not to ditch me during okay?"
"That's what I like to hear! Now it is a costume party so, we'll have to find you something to go in. But hey no worries, we're in town now so we can find something here." Diego said while standing up to leave.
You hadn't realized you'd have to dress up, and the thought of it made you kinda want to back out, but reluctantly you let Diego take you to a clothing shop anyway. You wanted to give your all into enjoying this experience.
. . .
Entering the shop you were greeted by a young woman who encouraged you to check out their extensive Halloween costume section.
"Hmm, I think we should find you something cute to wear, not too flashy, easy on the eyes..like you." Diego said as he bumped his elbow into your arm.
You decided to ignore the flirting and instead started to scan the racks of clothing, hoping to find something you'd be comfortable in.
Diego started to rummage through clothing, apparently eager to help you find a costume.
"Soo, what are you going as?" you asked plainly while scanning a skeleton body suit.
"Ah you know me, I gotta go big or go home so I'm going as a pirate all decked out in everything gold I could get my hands on." He said ruffling through more costumes.
You were about to give up your search and just go as a sheet ghost before Diego called out to you in joy.
"I found the perfect costume! Come here, come try it on!!" he said a little too loudly, causing the cashier to glare at him breifly.
He held out to you a red hood accompanied by an old-timey looking blouse and black corset attached to a silky red skirt for the bottom.
"It's Red Riding Hood! You'd look so cute in this!" Diego was beaming proudly at his find.
Not really wanting to go as a sheet ghost, you took the costume and headed for the dressing room.
Putting the costume on, you were pleased with how it fitted your body. Hugging the right places, while being flowy where it needed to be. Diego wasn't wrong, you did look cute.
When you exited the dressing room you saw Diego's disappointed expression.
"Aww what you're not gonna show me?" he whined.
"You'll see at the party anyways." you shrugged.
Diego paid for the costume and you both left the shop.
"Well, the party is at 10, so you should go home and get ready. Can't wait to see you there!" Diego chimed as you parted ways.
. . .
That night you had gotten dressed and admittedly were having to convince yourself time and time again to just go. You tried hard to silence the nagging voice in your head telling you to stay home and feign sickness the next day.
You took a deep breath in before opening the bar doors and stepping inside.
The bar was filled to the brim with people, some you recognized others you don't. All of them laughing, drinking and dancing in their costumes.
You looked around to try and spot any of your coworkers. Suddenly, an arm wrapped itself around your shoulders, startling you.
"You actually came!! That's good cause I didn't buy that costume for nothing..speaking of, you look adorable Y/N!"
It was Diego and you could instantly smell the liquor on his breath.
"Yeah I came, I didn't wanna leave you hanging..plus I'm supposed to keep you in check, have you had any drinks?" you asked, slipping out from under Diego's arm.
"Ah yeah, just two shots though, no more, I promise!" He laughed and whisked you away to a table before you could scold him.
At the table sat a group of people you didn't recognize but were supposedly Diego's friends. They were loud, slamming drinks on the table, screaming in each other's faces, pushing and pulling on one another. Deigo joined in the fun but you sat quietly, giving small smiles to the group whenever one of them accidentally bumped into you.
For the first half hour you did fine, even made a few light jokes and took a few shots to loosen up, however when the alcohol hit your head, you started becoming more and more sensitive to the lights and sounds around you. It started to become a bit much to handle.
You felt your face getting warm and you started to notice how much your clothes rubbed against your fur, making you uncomfortable. You attempted to take a calming breath in but it felt like the heavy scent of liquor and sweat absorbed all the oxygen. Your breaths became shallow and your mouth dry. You tugged on Diego's arm, wanting to ask him to move to a quieter spot for just a few seconds.
"Diego I think I need a break-" you started only to have Diego lightly shove you off of him. You looked up at him with confusion.
"It's a party, you want a break? You go home." he slurred his words a bit before taking another shot.
You decided to shake the hurt you felt from his comment and push.
"Hey, I think you've had too much to drink, let's go get water and-" you tried to pull Diego away from the table only to be shoved harder this time, almost causing you to fall backwards.
"Go get your water then." Diego said before returning his attention to his drinks and friends.
You felt the sting of tears in your eyes but blinked them away before heading towards the bar to get water. To your relief, you saw Gabi in an angel costume at the bar, making herself a drink.
When you got there, Gabi immediately saw the tired hurt in your eyes.
"Oh honey, you tried. You can't change him. Trust me, I also attempted to keep him sober. It's like stopping a fish from getting water" She guided your head to rest on her shoulder and gave you a few back pats.
She then pulled away and poured you a glass of water. You gladly accepted, grateful to have a 'mom' friend like Gabriella.
"You can hang with me for the rest of the night, I'm way more fun anyway" she winked at you.
You smile and nodded. She gently led you to a cleared spot in the bar, meant to be a makeshift dancefloor. She grabbed your hands and swayed to the music, singing along terribly. You couldn't help but laugh and sway with her. You felt a weight evaporate off of your chest and felt like you could breathe again.
After a bit of dancing, Gabi slowly came to a stop, staring off at a certain direction.
"No way that stalker-looking dog came back, who even invited him?" she scowled.
You immediately whipped your head in the direction she was looking. Your chest felt tight again..but this time in anticipation.
In a table all the way in the corner of the bar, sat Death. Looking straight at you with a grin on his face.
'Why is he here? He doesn't know Maria, so he wasn't invited. He only knows me...sort of. Did he come to see me?'
The thought of that made your heart flutter. Suddenly you and Death were locked in a staring contest, neither of you wanting to look away.
"I can get some guys to throw him out, hold on-" Gabi interrupted your stare down with Death.
"No no!..ah I mean, he's fine. I invited him." you lied.
"Oh, well then.. maybe you should talk to him. He's all by himself. Not that I care though, I'm gonna make another drink." Gabi said in shock. She gave you a quick hug before leaving for the bar.
You turned your attention back to Death who never stopped looking at you. He motioned his head towards the seat across from him at table.
Your heart did flips as you approached his table and sat down.
"No drink conejita?" he said tilting his head.
"I'm off the clock..and I've personally had enough to drink.." you said trying to keep your composure. You felt so confused yet happy in this moment.
Death nodded before shifting his gaze to look at something behind you.
"I think your friend has also had enough to drink." he laughed lightly.
You turned your head to see Diego drunkenly picking a fight with a stranger twice his size.
"Aye Diego..." you said putting your face in your hands. You were embarrassed Death saw you and him together while he acted like a fool.
Death gave a deep laugh that made you feel something you couldn't explain.
You looked up at him, you weren't sure if your cheeks were burning from the alcohol or your shyness. Even so, the alcohol gave you some courage and you were feeling ecstatic now that you're with Death again.
"So, you crashed the party and if Maria sees you she's gonna lose it..how come you're here?" you asked trying to not stare at his eyes.
"I needed to see you again." he stated plainly.
That sentence made something in you snap.
"Well I'm here." you breathed shallowly, your voice low, unable to hide the way you were feeling.
"Indeed you are, conejita." Death said in a similar tone, leaning forward.
You swore the entire world started moving in slow motion. Death was close enough to you that you could feel his breath on your fur. It took everything in you to not lean forward and rest your head in the crook of his neck.
'I really did have too much to drink' you thought helplessly.
You wanted to ask him a million questions about himself, you opened your mouth to speak only for his voice to ring out first.
"It's warm in here, no? Why not take another walk." He said standing up. You frowned at the sudden space he put between you and him.
Looking behind you, you saw Gabriella and Maria dancing together sloppily with huge smiles on their face. You also spotted Mateo for the first time tonight, flirting with a girl by the bar. Finally, you saw Diego, cursing while holding a cold glass of beer to his now blackened eye while his friends assure him it wasn't his fault.
'I feel kinda bad just leaving them without saying anything..' you thought before turning back to Death who now stood against the entrance doors in his dark poncho. He smiled at you before speaking, just barely audible to your ears in a smooth but teasing tone,
"You coming little bunny?"
'Nope, I don't feel bad at all.'
You followed Death out the door, into the cool dark night.
________________________________________
The alcohol was definitely affecting you more than you accounted for as you followed Death blindly in a random direction, no clue as to where you're going.
Again, normally something you wouldn't do.
Death was moving quicker than you remember him moving last time, it took a bit of effort to keep in step with him.
Happy to be alone with him again, you took this time to ask him everything that was on your tipsy mind.
"Why did you need to see me?" you asked.
"I want to show you something." he stated with amusement in his voice.
"Like what?"
"I want you to see my work."
"Oh you're job...but it's so late, what jobs still runs this late?"
"I don't get breaks." he said plainly.
"Well that's kinda dumb..and maybe even illegal? What's your job?" you furrowed your brows, trying to understand what he was saying.
"I'm Death." he said deadpanned.
"Yeah I know." you said matter of factly.
He laughed that deep laugh that made your heart flutter in your chest.
He then stopped to crouch down and face you so that he was just above eye level to you.
He raised his paw to your cheek and gently brushed his thumb across it.
Your breath hitched and suddenly your chest felt tight.
"I take the souls of the dead..." he whispered in a way that had you completely frozen in place.
He moved his paw to cup your chin and gently lifted your head so that your eyes met head on.
"and bring them to the afterlife." he was dangerously close to your face. Your heart skipped beats in anticipation for his next move.
"and there's no one.." he gently skimmed his claw from your jawline all the way down your neck.
"Who has ever escaped me." he finished in a deep hushed voice. He gently pinched your cheek before standing back up.
You let go of a breath you didn't know you were holding.
"Oh, I see.." you said quietly, your body still reeling from his touch. You didn't even really pay attention to what he had said.
"We're here conejita." Death said looking into the distance at something.
You moved to the side slightly to try and see what Death was looking at. A little bit away from where you both stood, a man sat slumped against a well, clearly intoxicated. He swished his beer bottle around, mumbling a song that sounded like something a sailor would sing.
Not understanding if that's what you were supposed to be looking at, you looked up at Death who now had an almost disappointed expression on his face.
Shifting your gaze back to the man, you could see his movements slow, as he started to slump to the side more and more, eventually laying on his side completely. His bottle spilling out onto the street.
"Did he just-"
"Die. Yes, yes he did." Death cut you off.
Your heart began to race and your mind filled suddenly with a million thoughts.
'What should I do. Do we get help? Do we call someone?? Can we revive him?? Did I actually just watch someone die??'
"No..wait I'm sure we can-" you began to take steps towards the man, but Death put a paw on your chest to stop you in your tracks.
"There's nothing anyone can do for him now." He said emotionless. He then approached the man, crouching down next to him.
"Then what are you doing??" you asked, following him, absolutely confused by what's going on.
"I told you..." Death started. He took out a sickle you didn't know he had and swiped it at the man. You gasped, but before you could say anything you were once again in awe of what you saw. On the point of the sickle there was a glowing ball of light. Death grabbed it and held the soft glowing ball of light in his paw. It looked ethereal, both tangible but also as if it could disappear at any moment.
Death brought the ball to his mouth, and said something inaudible. Then suddenly, the ball of light blew away, as if it were merely made of sand.
"I'm Death." he said coldly.
A few short seconds of confusion followed before finally your brain put all the pieces together.
You stared at him, unable to find the right words to say.
He once again crouched down to your level.
"And I don't mean it in any other way than literal. When your grandfather died, I was there. When your friends die, I'll be there, when you die, I'll. Be. Right. There. So whatever infatuation you have with me can end now. Go on. Run away like all little bunnies do." he said in a cold and harsh tone.
You admit, you had natural instincts that were screaming at you to run. But you also were...annoyed?
What did him being Death have to do with you? He wasn't soul reaping when he teased and taunted you at the bar that first night. He wasn't the grim reaper when he carried you home. He didn't have to be some terrifying entity that no one can get close to.
You felt frustration build in your chest and decided not to hold it back.
"What does that have to do with me liking you?! You don't get to decide if I like you or not, I do! You don't get to make me feel things and then think I'm gonna just run away over something like that! You started this with me, so finish it and walk me home!"
You yelled at him, using the last of your energy you had for the night. You sighed as you laid yourself down onto the ground, staring up at the night sky, much clearer than it was last time you saw it.
Suddenly you felt your body being lifted off the ground, once again being carried bridal style.
You looked at Death who had a grin on his face, looking ahead of him. He then looked down at you and leaned in close to your ear.
You breathed in the familiar after-rain scent he had. Something about that was so calming. You were slightly upset that his poncho stopped you from feeling his fur, but you also couldn't ask for anything more than to be in his arms right now.
"If I promise to stay do you promise not to run?" he said quietly.
You gently tightened your arms around his neck, taking in more of his scent.
"Of course." you hummed into his neck.
Truthfully, Death's entire day went wrong.
He spent the night thinking of you instead of carrying on his work.
He meant to scare you off way earlier in the day, only for your friend to ruin that.
He never meant to crash a party at the bar.
He didn't mean to caress your face.
He meant to scare you off after taking that mans soul.
Truly, he did the opposite of everything he wanted to happen today.
And with a grin on his face while carrying his sleepy little bunny home, he couldn't be happier.

Chapter One: Table 7a.
Tumblr media
'I am definitely a morning person.'
You thought to yourself as the sunlight from your bedroom window basically blinded you. You sighed, it must be 10am. You always woke up at 10am. No alarm needed, somehow your body knew what awaited it and got itself up without much help.
'I am absolutely a morning person.'
You tried to convince yourself as you stretched and felt all of the stiffness from sleep crackled and popped itself away. You finally summoned the energy to stand and immediately a shiver shot up from your feet to your head. The floor was ice cold, making you want to jump back into the sunny warmth of your bed. But instead, with a heavy sigh you treaded forward into your bathroom. You splashed warm water on your face and when you did you realized your face was cold as well, and the water felt nice. You let the water form a shallow pool in your hands and gently placed your face there.
'Maybe you really are a morning person.'
The thought crossed your mind only to be quickly interrupted by the sound of loud knocking on your front door.
You hastily patted your face dry and rushed to the door to see your long-time friend, Mateo standing there, looking more guilty than a murderer in Church.
"Don't be mad-" he started before you cut him off with a whiny retort.
"Noo Mateo don't do this to me pleasee." You begged, trying to avoid the inevitable B.S you knew was gonna come out of Mateo's mouth.
"I'm sorry Y/N, but Diego got hammered last night and he's really sick this morning, I even went over to check, just to make sure he wasn't lying and the poor kid is throwing up chunks. There's no way he can work, can you pleaaase work a double, por favorrr."
You sighed, knowing that you were definitely going to cover for him, but you were absolutely going to complain to yourself about it all morning.
"I am NOT a morning person, Mateo...but fine. I will come in, give me an hour and I'll be there and before you ask, sí, you do owe me, as well as Diego."
"Wait what, I'm just the messeng-" Mateo blurted before being interrupted with a playful "Adíos" and the door being shut in his face.
While getting ready to start your work day hours earlier than usual you cursed everything under the sun.
Curse your anxiety for making it so you would work at the same bar for 6 years, too afraid of new settings and people to ever try and get another job.
Curse Deigo for not knowing his drinking limits, forcing you to come in early instead of following your usual morning routine that you clung to so tightly.
Curse your need for control over your life, making you feel so overwhelmed and anxious when simple things like covering for a coworker occurs unexpectantly.
Curse life for being so difficult all the time.
Curse death too because if you were immortal you wouldn't have to worry about any of this at all.
You chuckled at your mini rant in your head before heading off to work at the bar that's been somewhat of a second home to you.
When you arrived at the bar, you took your usual position behind the counter, setting up your work area with clean glasses and making sure your kegs were ready. Your boss, Maria, placed a hand on your shoulder making you jump.
"Hola Y/N! Sorry to call you in like this, I know you already were gonna work the night shift but idiot one, Mateo, spent the after hours taking shots with idiot two, Diego, knowing he's a lightweight so, here we are, your lunch is on me today okay?" She gave you a reassuring smile before zipping away to take care of her duties.
You caught Mateo cleaning a table across the room and you shot him the coldest dirty look you could muster. No wonder he looked so nervous this morning, he was the main culprit. Mateo mouthed a pitiful "Sorry...love you!" while making a heart shape with his hands before running away out of your view into a backroom.
You sighed, and decided that you were going to try and make today a good day. At least at work you can escape your head. No room to overthink when you have to think about orders and drink making and cleaning tables.
Looking at a wall clock that read 11:34am, you decided to get lost in your work.
To your appreciation, the earlier work day went by fast. You saw the usual customers with their usual tales and problems and met a few newcomers who were just happy to see the bottom of a glass.
Checking the time again, it read 1:39am.
'Last call is at 2am, if I go fast I can be outta here by 3am.' You thought to yourself while drying some shot glasses.
Most of your coworkers bid you goodnight a while ago, they were lucky enough to only have one shift. You were left with Gabriella, a nice girl with good street smarts, and Maria, your ever so loving boss.
Gabriella bumped her hip into yours with a tired but happy smile on her face. She was always a bit of a space invader but she also was the first person to check in on you most times as well as defending you from customers who got a bit belligerent after too many drinks. So, you didn't mind her touchiness.
"Hanging in there Y/N? We're almost done! I'm ready for a nice hot bath tonight." she said while she picked up a few glasses, helping you get them clean.
"I'm definitely tired. When I see Mateo and Diego again they're never gonna hear the end of it....like...ever. I will haunt them in the afterlife, just watch Gabi, just watch."
Gabriella laughed before greeting Maria who then came behind the counter and got very close to you and Gabriella.
"Alright ladies, mira mira, table 7a.-"
You glanced up at the table that sat in the back corner of the bar, there sat a hooded figure, so tall they looked like they would tower over you even while sitting. You couldn't make out much of the figures face, except for a nose and mouth that definitely belongs to a wolf.
You were a little unsettled by them, afterall, if they wanted a late night drink, shouldn't they have approached the bar? Why sit in the dark, and why not speak to the bartender..? Are they looking for trouble?
Your thoughts were interrupted with the rest of Maria's sentence.
"He called me over, said he wants a Black Russian, I've got to count the drawers for the night so you two handle that..and be extra kind to him..seems like he's in a bad mood..."
Maria looks up at you both with a hint of concern in her eyes.
"If he causes trouble..call the coppers first...then me..kay'?"
Both you and Gabriella were a bit taken aback by Maria's request.
'Did he really give her that bad of a vibe?' you thought before returning your glance to the hooded figure. He now was looking up, and straight at all three of you. He had piercing red eyes that seemed illuminated no matter the lighting. You could swear you saw a small sinister grin on his face as he stared intently. You suddenly felt so uneasy, and unsafe. Your heart quickened its pace so you forced yourself to look away. Maria had apparently already left and you turned your head to see Gabriella caught in the same petrified state you were in.
"Gabi-" you started only to be cut off by her somewhat shaky voice. She snapped her head to look you in the eyes.
"Y/N, I'll wash the dishes, wipe the tables, sweep the floors and even prepare the kegs for tomorrow. But I'm not serving him."
"Gabi, you don't have to do all tha-"
Gabriella took another glance at the hooded figure and whatever she saw made her have visible goosebumps.
"I'll start now." She chirped quickly before dashing into the backroom.
You looked back at table 7a, and now there was no mistaking it. He was smiling. A bit wider than he was before as well. He found something funny, and for some reason, that gave you the same goosebumps Gabriella had.
You didn't want to trigger an anxiety attack, which were at times unfortunately frequent for you, so you figured you would just make his drink, the quicker you can get this stranger out of here, the better.
His drink...
.......
His drink....
'What the hell did he order again???'
You cursed yourself for forgetting what Maria said he wanted. You cursed this strangers intense gaze for erasing all of the thoughts from your head. Maria kept her office locked while counting money, and there was no way Gabriella remembered since she never had the intention of serving him anyway.
You were gonna have to ask him.
'Shit.'
You grabbed your little notebook and pen from behind the counter before hesitantly making your way to table 7a.
You tried to keep your eyes down at the floor but you did glance up while making your way over and confirmed your suspicion that this wolf was staring you down all the way to his table. It left this ball of uneasiness in the pit of your stomach. You took a big but quiet breath in as you approached his table.
"Hola señor, I'll be serving you tonight, could you please remind me what your order was again?" You prayed your unease didn't show in your tone as you put on your best customer serving voice.
The wolf said nothing for a few seconds, staring at you with a smile that maybe would seem friendly on anyone else but him. Those seconds felt like an eternity as you took the time to see his face up close. His fur was white, with a dark mask like pattering over his eyes leading all the way down his snout. Despite the ghastly hood that might have suggested otherwise, his fur looked soft. You admittedly thought about what it would feel like to touch it. You concluded that on closer inspection, he was a bit handsome.
"A Black Russian." His voice interrupted your shameless thoughts. His voice was deep, smooth and cold and had the inflection like he thought something was just a bit comical.
"Of course, coming right up." You quickly spun yourself around and sped walked away back to the safety of the counter.
In practically no time, the Black Russian was made. This time while walking back to the table you made sure to keep your eyes down. You wondered when the last time someone even ordered a Black Russian was.
When you reached his table, you desperately didn't want to meet his eyes again, they made you feel like you were frozen in place, staring hopelessly at something that looked like it kinda wanted to eat you. So instead you focused your sight on your hand placing the drink on the table, trying again to hide your uneasiness.
All the while, Death, unbeknownst to you, was having a bit of a fun time watching you. The way you had tapped your pen nervously on your notepad, the way you bounced from one foot to the other, biting your lower lip and desperately trying to avoid eye contact. And he especially took notice of the way your tail twitched now and again. He knew he made you unbelievably unnerved and you wanted nothing more than to escape the situation. And yet there you were, taking his order with the shakiest smile ever. You could've cowardly escaped to the backroom like your friend but you didn't. You endured his unsettling gaze and he admittedly loved every moment of it.
"Will that be all..it's the last call so.." Your voice finally gave in and you couldn't hide your uncomfortability towards the end of your sentence.
He decided he was having more fun than he planned to, and he wasn't finished torturing you yet. He licked his lips, and you took a shameful amount of interest in the size of his teeth and the way his tongue rolled over them.
"Actually, I meant to order a White Russian. Would you mind.." He looked up at you, giving a smirk that didn't hide his devious amusement.
It took you a second to find your train of thought.
"Right, a White Russian..so cream then, I'll be right back." you chirped before retreating once again to your counter.
While fetching the cream needed for his drink, Maria finally left the safety of the office, she had her coat on, so you guessed she was ready to leave. She glanced over to the wolf, before turning her gaze back onto you.
"Any trouble out of that one?"
Truthfully, despite feeling as though you wanted to run for the hills during your entire interaction with him, and having a hunch that you will never forget those daggers he has for eyes. He wasn't actually guilty of anything other than looking like serial killer. You couldn't truthfully claim he did anything worth being labeled trouble.
"No, he um, just wanted a White Russian instead." you stated while motioning with the small pitcher of cream in your hand. Maria breathed a sigh of relief.
"That's good, well Gabi seemed a little sick when I saw her last in the back so I sent her home, she didn't get to wipe the tables so that and locking up are your final tasks for the night. It's raining pretty hard so try and find a spare umbrella in the back. Night Y/N." Maria then made her way out of the back exit. Leaving you and the wolf in the bar alone.
. . .
Oh right, his White Russian.
You spun around to see him tapping his claw on the table. Guess you took too long, he no longer seemed as amused.
You zipped to his table, while simultaneously trying not to spill any cream. When you approached him he immediately startled you with his voice.
"Any longer and the ice would've melted..and I thought rabbits were meant to be fast." He gave a deep half chuckle.
You were almost offended at his comment, there wasn't a need for stereotypes, after all you could say a lot about him being a big scary wolf. Suddenly, you had newly sprung courage bubble up in you. You poured the cream carefully and decided to speak up.
"If you had ordered the right drink the first go around you wouldn't have to wait Señor Lobo. We all can't be perfect."
As soon as the words left your mouth, you desperately wanted to swallow them back up. Hesitantly, you peeked up at the wolf. For a second you thought you might've saw a surprised expression on his face before quickly being replaced by one of devious amusement once again. He gave a deep hearty laugh before downing his drink and licking his lips. You cursed yourself for focusing on his mouth so much.
He then abruptly stuck out his paw with a grin.
You hesitantly placed your hand in his and gave a small shake.
"Death." he spoke as he tilted his head slightly, not letting go of your hand.
"What? Wait like, that's your name or..are you wishing it on me?" You asked giving a fake chuckle, hoping that he wasn't actually wishing death on you.
"That's my name. And yours is?" He still held your hand, it was strangely cold for someone who was covered in so much fur.
"Y/N..Ramirez." You gave a small smile before gently trying to pull your hand back only for him to hold it tighter for a second longer before letting go.
You hadn't really thought too deeply into his name, you've met a lot of folks with all sorts of unique names, some they were given, others they came up with themselves. If anything, his name suited him well. You couldn't imagine if he had a name like..José or Luis.
"Well, Death..the bar is now closed and I've just got these tables to clean before locking up. It was..nice meeting you and I hope you come again." You gave him the same spiel you gave every new customer.
"Of course, enjoy the rest of your evening, Y/N," He said smoothly. You nodded and reached into your servers belt to fish out his receipt.
However, when you looked up to give it to him, he was gone, and on the table was a pile of gold coins that were worth more than what one lousy White Russian would cost.
You looked around in confusion as you didn't comprehend how he could've gotten past you without making a sound. Or how he could've left through the front doors without ringing the bells at the top. You shook your head as you realized how tired you were. You scooped up the coins and left them on Maria's desk for tomorrow, after that you wiped the tables down and let your mind wander as you locked all the doors and windows of the bar.
You initially thought that Death's encounter with you would leave you with nightmarish memories of his red eyes and chilling demeanor. Instead, however, you kept thinking about all the wrong things.
You thought about how you liked his fur, and how soft it looked.
You like his scent, it reminded you of how it smells right after it rains.
You liked the way he talked, deep, smooth, and confident.
You liked the way his tongue glossed over his large teeth..and the way your hand felt in his..
You forcefully ejected yourself from your embarrassing thoughts as you locked the front door and stepped into the hard rain.
'Right. Maria did say it was raining and I did not grab an umbrella. What a damn idiot am I.'
You sighed deeply, preparing yourself for the 15 minute soaking wet walk you were gonna have to take home. You only got a couple paces in the direction of your home before you stopped in your tracks.
'Ah, I was right. I didn't forget those eyes.'
You thought to yourself as you immediately recognized Death's illuminated red eyes in the shadow of a tree not too far from where you stood. Hesitantly, you called out to him.
"...Death?"
Instantly, he emerged from the shadows, chuckling to himself as he approached you.
"Bien, conejita, muy bien. You have good awareness."
For some reason, you made a mental note to remember his compliment to you.
"Were you out here waiting for me?" you asked as he finally got within a few feet of you. It was then you truly realized how big he was. You weren't as small as other rabbits in your family, in fact you kinda considered yourself tall for a rabbit and yet, your head only came up to his chest, forcing you to lift your head up to look at him.
"Sí, it's raining hard and you have no umbrella. So I'll be a gentleman and lend you this."
Suddenly the hard pellets of rain no longer battered down on you, you blinked and realized, Death no longer had on his poncho, instead, it was on you.
You felt your cheeks and ears burn red with embarrassment.
"Ah, gracías.." You focused your sight on the ground as you found it too hard to face him in that moment.
"No problem, though of course you can't keep it..we are strangers after all, sí?"
'Oh right. Well then he'll have to take it back...after I get home.....Oh.'
You then realized what he was implying. He was gonna walk you home, you felt your cheeks and ears burn even hotter, and for a second you wanted to feel the rain on your face to cool you down.
"Right, well just this way then.." you trailed off as you began picking your pace back up in the correct direction.
While you focused your gaze on the ground out of shyness, Death focused his gaze on you.
He admittedly wasn't entirely sure why he was out here, walking some bunny to her home in the rain. He only meant to stop in for a quick drink after a long day. He mentally flipped through reasons that led him to be here, chauffeuring a little rabbit home.
He found you interesting, he liked the effect he had on you, specifically.
He had a strong effect on practically everyone. The running, screaming, pleading, fighting back kind of effect.
But on you, there was a push and pull. He noticed the way you couldn't be still under his gaze, how when given the chance you practically scattered to the comfort of the counter away from his table...but he also noticed the way you had unconsciously grazed your thumb over his paw when you shook hands... and the way your breath hitched when he leaned in too close. He chalked up his interest to wanting answers for this strange behavior and figured a quick chat on the way to your home would be all he needed to satisfy his curiosity.
....Plus, he enjoyed the way you had to keep pulling up his poncho because it was much too big for you. He couldn't help but chuckle at the sight.
"It's just past this uphill, not too far." You interrupted his thoughts. Your voice shaky, but this time not from uneasiness, instead, you found yourself very, very cold. Despite his poncho covering most of your body, it wasn't thick enough to not be eventually soaked in the relentless rain.
The shivering as well as the now slippery uphill walk slowed your pace greatly. Death, who was already making an effort to not speed past you with his naturally longer strides now had to come almost to a complete stop. He watched you helplessly attempt to conquer a small hill.
He didn't want to spend this much time on this little side quest of his. Shaking his head, he decided there was no other option.
He swiftly got close behind you and scooped you up bridal style into his arms. You screamed out in surprise as you found yourself suddenly looking up at Death, and the cloudy night sky, with rain more gently now, hitting your face. Death looked annoyed as he moved his mouth dangerously close to your ear.
"Hush now, conejita, you're starting to become more of a burden than you're worth." he whispered in your ear.
Offended, you scowled and looked away from him.
'It wasn't like I asked you to walk me home.' You thought to yourself as you begrudgingly let Death carry you in his arms, wishing you were home already in your warm bed.
Death looked down at you, seeing your hurt expression made him upset. He truthfully didn't mean to come across as rude as he did. The whole reason he's even here right now was to talk to you. Strangely for him, he regretted his comment and tried to change the subject.
"How long have you worked at the bar?" He asked plainly.
"Six and a half years, 17 days and 14 hours but hey who's counting." You grinned at your joke. You honestly did love working at the bar, despite all of the challenges it can present you.
Death nodded before carrying on.
"So then, you've seen many different kinds of people. What do you think of them?"
You gave your answer thought before speaking, humming while you did so.
"Ahh, most people are fun. They just want to let loose and chat everyone's head off. That, or they are looking for some comfort in drinking. Either way, I've had no real problems with most of the customers. I just do my best to give them what they need."
The rain has now come to a light sprinkle, the cold air pushed against you, making you want to retreat into the fur of this large wolf, but you refrained, not wanting to cross a line.
Death hummed in response and then there was a silence. You closed your eyes and focused on the crunch of the leaves under Death's feet as he carried you to home.
You could faintly hear his breathing, calm and steady despite just overcoming the uphill in the rain. The rhythmic rise and fall of his chest combined with the sway of the walk was just the break you needed after such a long day.
Death's voice broke the silence.
"And what do you make of me."
Although it was a question, Death said it like he it was more of a thought to himself, as if he already knew the answer and was just thinking out loud.
You took even longer to answer this time.
"I think you must have it hard, with your appearance being so...unnerving. But you're a good guy I think. Plus, when you get a good look, you look kinda handsome. So cheer up, and don't be so down, you don't have to be the big bad wolf, you can be whatever you want."
You decided to answer honestly as you saw your cottage not too far away. And it's not like you'll ever see this guy again, so who cares if you say something just a bit embarrassing.
Suddenly, Death placed you gently onto your feet and removed his poncho from you.
You turned to look at him, hoping your honesty didn't tick him off. Death stared off at something else. This time he was the one avoiding eye contact.
"You're home, rabbit." He said as he put his poncho back on himself, seemingly unbothered by how cold and wet it was.
You turned to see your cottage just a few paces ahead of you.
"Ah thank you, be safe on your travels."
He paused, still glaring into the void.
"You too conejita, I don't want to see you too soon."
Before you could ask him what that last part meant, you blinked and he vanished. And somehow, with his departure, the air felt warmer.
That night, after a much needed shower and dinner, you laid in your bed with your head full of nothing but the wolf from the bar.
You wished on every star you could see from your window that he wasn't just a passersby.
That you might get to see Death again.
You drifted off to sleep, with dreams of Death filling your head.
.....
Not far from your home, Death sat against a tree. Your words replaying in his mind. He ruffled the fur on the top of his head with a heavy sigh.
He knew he couldn't leave you alone after that.
End of chapter one.

SINNERS MASTERLIST
18+
bucky barnes x reader
series status: ongoing
series summary: anna, your best friend, recently broke up her with shitty boyfriend, bucky. it seems like fate keeps forcing you guys into the same room. bucky hates you. you hate bucky. but you soon realize that there’s a thin line between hate and horny.
series warnings: asshole!bucky x reader, smut (inc. depictions of rough sex, hate-fucking, daddy kink, dom/sub dynamic, offscreen steve x reader and who knows, maybe some on-screen too), semi-cheating, reader and bucky are crass and thoughtless, enemies to lovers to enemies, and back to lovers?, angst, dark and mature themes.
