Here it is. The final outcome for the editorial. I’ve named it my inspiration for this project: Fabricating The Present. I think its a fitting title and sets the tone for the rest of the spreads. I’ll have another review of the whole project later in the week but for now I’m very happy with everything and this has so far been one of my favourite projects during my time at Chelsea. Here’s a few of the spreads.

Edited all the pictures and now making the editorial. Petes feedback last time was that some of the text looked a bit clunky on the page so I’ve been working on that this week. Reduced three columns to two, used a slightly smaller text size in some bits and really just worked to use the most interesting images I got from the day. I’m pretty pleased with it so far but still working on it.

Finished the shoot! I think it went pretty well. The lighting turned out to be basically perfect for the shoot so that was really helpful. I almost died from hay fever and I got grass stains all over my beige trousers but I think it was worth it. Got to edit about 200 photos tonight and then finish the editorial and then I’m done so not much left...here’s a cheeky pic of me in action a local fan snapped

Some beautifully ironed flags. Got the shoot tomorrow. Think I’m all prepared just have to actually do it now.

Still love the flags. Just been planning the shoot - I can’t afford to get everyone out to a beach so going to head for a park instead. Brockwell park being my local is the obvious choice. I know the place pretty well and can envisage the shots. It’s got a great hill so hopefully can make the most of that somehow. The only problem is weather. I need a bright/sunny day ideally so got to figure out when is best. The weathers a bit weird at the moment so I can't really tell but I’ll figure it out.

OOOOO FLAGS. They're bloody huge which I love and they've come out so well. Colours are perfect and I’m really pleased. A massive weight has just been lifted off my shoulders.

Been getting some references together for the shoot next week. In my head I can see them in a natural environment like a park or a beach. I think the bright colours on the white background will really stand out amongst the tones of a natural environment. I’ve been gathering images of what I would love the pictures to look like. I’ve definitely got to capture some movement within these photos - they can't be too static

The flags are still off being printed so I’ve a few free days of sitting in terror hoping that I haven't fucked anything up on them. To distract myself I’ve started putting together an editorial piece in which I want to showcase the flags once I get them. I hope to do a photoshoot with them and the people involved and make a simple book where, as I put it earlier, people wear the flags on their shoulders as a coat of arts. I’ve started on a few of the spreads - these aren't the pictures I’m going to use but I needed something to fill the space while I work on the layout of the text and images.

Ive definitely been staring at these flags for too long but hey ho I’ve got my third and final flag. It was more difficult to refine the themes within this conversation but I feel its reached a nice point. Next stage is sending them off for print so thats pretty big and kind of nervous about that...I’m sure it’ll be fine. Flag three:

I think I’ve found a place to print my flags. I debated for a while what kind of style I wanted to go for; could do it by hand and get that embroided look, could iron on transfer bits to fabric or go for a shitty nylon flag look. After a lot of thinking I realised the symbolism that a shitty nylon flag carries trumps all the other options. It becomes something you can then, something you wear over your shoulders with pride. Anyway I found a place online that can produce the flags at a pretty low price. I’m looking to get big flags made - 150cm x 100cm and this place can do them for £30 each which is not too bad. I’m willing to spend a bit of money anyway as its second year FMP. The place is called Hello Print.

Managed to push through the anxiety and make the second flag. This one took a lot longer to make and went through multiple versions in multiple colour ways but I finally got there and I’m pretty happy with it. She spoke a lot about people being part of the moment in her interview so I used that as the basis and it works really nicely.

I also managed to do the third conversation this week. This had A LOT to say but it was really good because of that. I think for now I’m just going to stick to three flags because of time and money so this is the last flag to come!

I’ve now got the second interview finished. its really interesting how different this second person was to the first. At first she found it more difficult to articulate her thoughts but as we got into it she was really good and it kind of ended up being more of a discussion than an interview which was really nice. We spoke for quite a while about how people affect her life quite a lot. She’s in a good place right now and that has a lot to do with the people’s around. Here’s the refined conversation.

Got to design the second flag now. I’m a bit anxious to start designing it really. I feel like I set quite a high bar with the first one just in terms of the feeling and symbolism but hopefully I can keep that up for the second one. We’ll see...

First flag doneeeee. I’m actually really pleased with how its turned out. I had to figure out my own language with it which was the hardest thing to do. I thought about using images for a while or just using shape and colour but I didn’t want it to look like everything out there at the moment. So I decided to look in the library for something different and found this book.
And what a find it was. It has given me insight into all sorts of forms and shapes and symbolism that I never would have thought to go to. I just studied the book for a couple of days and then started designing and it all seemed to come together so nicely. Just using really simple shapes but in an interesting way. I’m happy with it and so hopefully can use it as a basis for the next ones. Here it is.

Each element contains its own meaning in relation to the conversation. For instance, the central circle stands for your “cosmos” or “universe”, basically the point in time in which you are in. Behind that is seong’s past and future using a gradient of yellow to pink standing for innocence and warmth. The lines with dots in the middle stand for intellect. I’ve tried to think out each element but also make it coherent in terms of its design and something that is nice to look at.

As in inspiration for flags I wanted to use conversation I have with people discussing where they feel they are in this present moment. Its quite a challenging this to quantify really and difficult when I feel like people don’t really think about it or want to discuss it. Anyway I got in contact with Seong, an international student, an amazing girl who was really open when I interviewed her this week. Despite English being her second language she managed to articulate her thoughts so well. The conversation is below but I feel like the main themes were people and movement. Thats how she felt like she was in the present; if she was moving within her space. The next task is to start designing her flag and also interview more people.

Really been trying to immerse myself is references. Not just looking at flags and the history but how they sit in our society now. They’re still very powerful tools to represent groups and the culture they carry is quite incredible. Anyway a few more references I’ve gathered.
