Why isn’t this on the news everywhere right now? Talking about it would bring up the long history of white racism expressed through the burning of Black churches (sometimes with people inside) and the mass media’s job is to protect, project and perpetuate the illusion of white innocence. Here the victims are Black and most likely in all these cases the arsonists are white racist. The media will do anything to avoid that conversation. However that purse snatching Black kid? Yea they’ll break into regular programming for that.
And you wonder why white people cant talk about race or racism without shorting a circuit.

In this digital age fifteen minutes of fame seems nearly not as precious as fifteen minutes of privacy. Andy Warhol was famously quoted to predict that in the future everyone would be famous for fifteen minutes (Phrase Finder, Gary Martin, 2015) With the expansion of social media avenues, people are able to share more and more of their life online, with a small percentage of these people achieving some sort of “Micro celebrity” status. Social media avenues such as Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook allow consumers to create an online Identity, this online identity is controlled mostly by the consumer themselves but is generally readily available to the greater public. Issues begin to arise with privacy and ethics when personal information is unwillingly distributed for public viewing, “Internet privacy is the privacy and security level of personal data published via the Internet” (Techopedia.com, 2015) Some consumers go one step further and utilise the exposure that social media provides to begin or further their career paths. The ever expanding YouTube community features online personalities involved with comedy work, beauty gurus, lifestyle gurus, and daily vloggers (video-bloggers) It is a unique outlet that allows the audience and consumers to produce material, and also provides an avenue for communication between the person and their audience.
Online identity can have a large influence in a work industry, with many companies, brands, and stores resorting to Social Media to promote their goods and services. Along with forming their own identity, these companies realise the potential of advertisement and promotion through association and or reviews done by online “Micro celebrities”, this form of association is a powerful tool. There are some online celebrities who have a fan base of millions of people, who generally trust the opinion and strive towards the lifestyle presented by the online celebrity. Companies are able to tap into this fan base through collaboration with the online celebrity, therefore creating more work and income for that particular person.
For the Beauty and Lifestyle gurus of YouTube, Social media has completely expanded and changed the way in which they present themselves and their information, as well as the way in which they interact with their clients/audience. Without the help of social media these “gurus” would be confined to most likely some sort of office space or magazine column, whereas now they are able to present through YouTube videos, Instagram images, Pinterest images, and converse with their audience through twitter. These outlets also provide statistical data to the Content Producers about their audiences demographics, and which type of videos garner the most views etc. allowing them to further improve and tailor their content towards their viewers. Along with this data come the first hand reviews and interactions available through YouTube comments, and Twitter. The convergence of different media can be defined as “flow of content across multiple media platforms” (MEDIA CONVERGENCE, 2011) Or otherwise the combination of multiple media types “Media convergence is the merging of mass communication outlets – print, television, radio, the Internet along with portable and interactive technologies through various digital media platforms” (M, Higgins. What Is media convergence, 2010) This process of media convergence allows media professionals like Beauty Gurus Zoella and Tanya burr to present information, opinions, stories using various types of media, which often leads to a larger range of exposure and interactivity between the professionals and their audience. Lifestyle and beauty Vlogger Zoella has just under eight million subscribers on her YouTube channel, 3.9 million followers on twitter, and 4.4 million followers on instagram. Her Internet presence thrives on the convergence of multiple avenues of media of which she is involved, for example she is able to tell her 8 million subscribers on YouTube to follow her twitter account, or otherwise promote her current projects Such as book releases or product releases with which she is involved. Zoella’s YouTube Channel focuses mainly on Beauty and Lifestyle topics and sometimes comedy, her audience is predominately female and of a younger demographic. Originally Zoella’s content began unsponsored and her video’s often served as reviews for cosmetic products etc. As she gained popularity through the growth and exposure of different media sites her content expanded and she has since been able to release a cosmetics range as well as a fictional novel, both of which have been highly successful due to her already existing fan base. Social media allows for her audience to converse with both Zoella and between themselves, many online followings become known as “fandoms” of which all participants are dedicated supporters. Basically for bloggers and Vloggers such as Zoella, social media is a both a way to present their content as well as to interact and expand their audience. Daily Vlogging is a common occurrence amongst YouTubers, and has basically become the online version and or alternative to reality TV. However instead of a 20 person film and editing crew, as well as managers and marketers, YouTubers simply film, edit, post and promote their own Vlogs and garner a regular viewing following. Larger YouTubers such as Zoella, Tyler Oakely, and Grace Helbig produce video content that often tends to go viral, in the sense that some videos are getting millions of views. This Viral content is spread through the convergence of different media types, where audiences are liking the video so therefore it is popping up on someone else’s feed, or Some go even as far to re-post links to their own social media spaces. Twitter is evidence of how the use of hashtags can widen an audience if the topic at being discussed beings to “trend”. This is where the particular topic being discussed under a specific hashtag appears in sidebar available worldwide to the entirety of twitter.
YouTube now offers monetization for all content producers on YouTube, with income being provided for view counts. These rates however are quite low and for most content producers on YouTube, would not provide a sufficient income, sitting at about $2.50 per 1000 views (Codefuel, 2014) However for the top percentage of successful Youtubers in addition to promotional work/advertising rates, YouTube provides a substantial income. YouTube provides both a new kind of job as well as a much larger audience for its consumers; although the audience is “invisible” they are represented in the subscriber counts and play a huge part in the success of a Youtuber. Making money from participating in Social Media was basically unheard of until more recently in the last few years, no one thought anyone would be able to make money from something people enjoyed to engage in as part of their daily ritual.
As great as it is that there seems to be a whole other entertainment industry that has emerged from YouTube, the constant involvement and uploading of personal content to a public site has become somewhat of an issue of privacy for online celebrities. Privacy today is more defined as the right to control the content uploaded in relation to oneself. In an industry such as the YouTube community, where many vloggers upload content daily a lot of the barrier between the content creator and their audience is lost. And in the same way society reacts to normal celebrities, the YouTuber’s fan base can sometimes become intrusive in hunting down private information about that certain YouTuber. In an incident involving Zoella sometime in 2013, another daily vlogger had unintentionally captured some personally information concerning Zoella and her relationship with another YouTuber ever so slightly in the background of one of his blogs. Some of the audience however noticed this detail and began sharing screenshots of the revealing image; this is a classic example of personal information being involuntarily shared. Unfortunately once something hits the Internet it seems it’s never truly lost, with hundreds of thousands of digital copies being stored in varying multiple places no one is really ever able to delete something once it’s posted. This issue with the lack of control as to what is distributed about oneself online obviously becomes an issue in ethics as to whether regulations or laws should be implemented specifically to protect such information. However this would also bring into debate how any sort of program could fairly monitor and privacy breaches and what freedom of speech etc would be lost in the process?
Social Media is an ever-growing outlet of creativity, and is continuously producing new opportunities in many industries that would have otherwise remained stagnant. The convergence of different media types only benefits each digital avenue and expands the exposure of each one, however such exposure brings into question the amount of privacy still available to users of social media. This lack of privacy and control also brings into question the supposed ability to control one’s online identity. Do the risks outweigh the benefits, or will it just take some adjusting to fully accept this thriving avenue of an industry? -Daniella Brown Student: n8809283 REFERENCES: Higgins, M. GLASS SCULPTURE
I've been watching your world from afar, I've been trying to be where you are, And I've been secretly falling apart, I'll see. To me, you're strange and you're beautiful, You'd be so perfect with me but you just can't see, You turn every head but you don't see me. I'll put a spell on you, You'll fall asleep and I'll put a spell on you. And when I wake you, I'll be the first thing you see, And you'll realise that you love me. - Strange and Beautiful by Aqualung
