Y'all I went back for week 2 and aaaaa
It's late so I'll put together a post later but like. I should've known better. Of course I was gonna fall head over heels for this movie
(tiny teaser below)
(in related news I've got at least a month of cinema visits ahead of me, and probably closer to 5 or 6 weeks. Should've known they'd pull sth like this...I'm sure they did for World Tours too and I just didn't notice)
(and yes fine okay I am overdue on the penlight and learning the calls)

welp. didn't even make it 48 hours before a rewatch lmfao
got the Camus tokuten this time!
aaand immediately went and bought the Set List album afterwards. ._. not beating the "enjoyed the movie" allegations, review notwithstanding
Just a few more notes:
I was right. The cringe factor shrank significantly on a rewatch. It helps that there's foreshadowing/callbacks throughout the movie, so once you understand the "plot" there's a lot of callbacks
given that the film is called "taboo night kisses." and they're all fully "nothing is taboo"...is That One Hand Gesture...perhaps....intentional (no. it Must mean nothing in Japan. Unless?)
The two songs in a row are at the end, not the beginning lmao. I like both the end ones tho
The one I needed, however, was the encore track. Which to my knowledge currently only exists in Movie Size on the Set List 3 CD. (Hence me buying that CD immediately. I really like it ok.) I really really hope there's a full version that comes out at some point...
TABOO NIGHT XXXX - First watch review
I saw the new Quartet Night movie so you don't have to (jk, you should)
I would give it 3/5 stars or so, frankly, but mostly for idiosyncratic reasons, and I'd still recommend watching it at least once.
spoilers below the cut!
TL;DR:
Premise(s): Mostly very silly
Costumes: Gorgeous textures, hit-and-miss designs
Songs: big range of enjoyment here for me, ymmv
Fanservice: very fun
Lore: minimal (aside from the very silly premises)
If you enjoyed Starish World Tours, you'll probably greatly enjoy this film. If you have a bit lower of a cringe threshold (like me) then parts of this are...a bit much.
There's a voiceover at the start that's very cute, in the same style as Maji Love Kingdom and World Tours.
Once the film itself starts, at least 70% of it is premise-focused, with explanations of who each character is interspersed with the songs. The QN boys are playing characters—multiple, complete with costume changes. There is a plot tying the whole film together, a kind of central narrative arc, which is a new thing for this film. It has a multi-part premise that I would characterize as simultaneously lightweight and convoluted. Kind of like a concept album as extended music video, actually.
Overall, I didn't really enjoy what they were aiming for through most of the film, but I think there might be a variety of opinions on that front. The issue for me is that my favorite way to enjoy QN is through a parasocial enjoyment of their "real" selves and interactions; the fact that they're spending most of it doing some frankly corny playacting means that I enjoyed watching them less than I would otherwise.
(Note that this doesn't necessarily mean that I hate character work! The Faust audio drama was good. But those characters had depth and got to be angsty, and there's no time for that sort of thing here given the scope this film tries to cover.)
That said, the further into the film you get, the more they drop their personas and let their actual selves shine through. By the end I was having a great time.
Songs
My enjoyment of the songs was very much tied to my impressions of most of the premises. I didn't actually go out of my way to listen to the songs ahead of time this time, so I got to get the first impression from the film itself (and also I have no idea what the lyrics are saying).
Intro song: too many style shifts, fun (if silly) choreography/concept. (Were there two of these? I genuinely don't remember. If there were I liked the second one better than the first. I know those statements are contradictory and I apologize lol)
Solo songs: I giggled at Camus's but overall enjoyed it, Reiji's I genuinely loved and wanna listen to the lyrics more carefully next time, Ranmaru why, Ai's was...eh, it was okay. (Not my favorite Ai mode, I'm picky about those, but I also can't deny it suits him.)
Duets: These were fun, if a little bit...not bland, exactly, but like. Not cutting-edge or anything. (okay, maybe cutting-edge for Camus, a little. If you're into that sort of thing.) More than a little kitschy with the choreography etc, but not terrible.
Combo songs: I honestly want to watch these again, in part because there was just so much going on that none of it really stands out in retrospect. But in a good way? Idk.
Encore song: yes good more please. This may or may not be influenced by the fact that they're finally out of costume. But also the song just plain sounds great. 10/10 want to watch this bit again.
A couple other miscellaneous pluses
The textures on the outfits were clearly something they were trying to highlight. From leather to silk, with textures and sequins and lots of little bells-and-whistles, the cinematography often highlighted how much effort was put into the outfits. They're in fact very pleasant to look at even when they're overall a bit absurd
There are tiny fanservice moments between the boys, I think no matter who you ship (though maybe a combo or two slipped through the cracks; I'd have to rewatch to be sure)
see: that chin grab FUCK yeah
The moments when they let their real selves shine through are wonderful and I loved them. Easily those alone save the film.
The credits have some very nice callbacks. Impeccable vibes.
I got a pretty nice pull on the tokutens:

(see what I mean about going hard on the premise?)
...And a few slightly more spoilery minuses
I refuse to appreciate the gryphons. No, especially not the chibi ones.
Why a jester in a circus. Are those not two different time settings and time periods.
The lightsabers are just unnecessary I'm so sorry, Ranmaru is not a Sith no matter how much he might want to look like one
I lost it a little (derogatory) when I saw the tail, not even going to lie (whose idea was that entire song aghhhh)
Stealer is just a stupid word okay I simply cannot
Overall, I'm still deciding if I want to watch this again in theaters, but I bet if and when I do the cringe factor will bother me less a second time. That's usually how it goes.
Another reason I might turn up again is just to support the film. Even though I went to a "live" show on the opening day, there weren't a ton of people in my theater, and they were pretty ambivalent about the penlight-waving. (To be fair, I didn't go to a very large or central theater, and several of the songs are hard to wave a penlight to—everyone needs to get a bit of practice in between the shifting tempos and the calls. It's another call-heavy live.)
But I want this film to be a success to encourage them make another one someday—maybe one that goes a little less high-concept and is just the boys strutting their stuff on their own merits. After all, that's what I fell in love with them for.

QUARTET NIGHT TNXXXX Duet Song Documentary Summary

I'll never find the time to make a full translation so here's a summary of the drama track documentary!! sorry if it has sloppy writing, I was re-listening to it and typing away as much as I could...
Chapter 1
QN are having a meeting about the upcoming concert. The solo songs are already done, and they want to do the group songs later, once they have a clear direction for the entire concert. Reiji suggests doing duet songs! The others agree that it's a good idea. To decide which pairings they should go for, they briefly go over every duet song they've already done. When Reiji mentions Non-Fiction, Ran & Myu immediately claim that they do NOT want to pair up. They then start provoking each other about it (C: "We're not on the same level" R: "Huh, you're just scared"), and Reiji tries to calm Ranmaru down. Ai does the same for Camus. So, Ranmaru says that they should go with these duos. Everyone likes the idea because it's the same combination as their first duets, so it'll be cool to see how much they've grown (also Ranmaru and Camus try to drag Reiji and Ai into their rivalry lmaoo). After that, they decide that the overall theme should be "call and response," so the fans can participate in the songs too.
Chapter 2
Reiji and Ranmaru's first meeting for their song. They want to find a good call for all the my girls and my boys~ to include the audience as much as possible and make them yell. Ranmaru wants a sound that comes from the stomach. They spend a whole minute making woo! woa! wOAR! WOY! sounds until they find the right one and high-five. (Btw, there's a high-five in every single chapter, "group that doesn't get along," you're not fooling anyone)
Chapter 3
Same thing with Ai and Camus. They want to find the best way to express their love for the fans, because an idol is someone that is loved and loves back. Ai thinks of a kiss, so he literally makes a kiss sound and asks Camus to do the same.
Chapter 4
While Reiji and Ranmaru are working on the lyrics, Reiji laughs to himself and reminisces about the first time they did a duet song together, back when they didn't know each other very well. Ranmaru adds that back then, he didn't really want to be an idol, to which Reiji responds that it was the opposite for him. He was really enthusiastic about his work, even if there were times when he wasn't sure if he should continue. He started as a child actor, had his ups and downs, but still strived to survive in the industry. Then, he got to be a part of QN, which gave him so many new paths he couldn't have found on his own. Ranmaru stays quiet. Reiji continues and says that it was like they shone a light on his future, made him really happy, and reminded him that he loved being an idol after all. And that feeling hasn't changed, even if he was never sure how far they could go, or when they would reach their limit. That's why the upcoming concert is really important to him. Ranmaru gives Reiji a very strong slap on the back, and tells him to focus on the current song (rather than when this could all end, I'm assuming). They both laugh and Reiji says that Ranmaru has a strength of mind that he's always admired. To him, Ranmaru is really reliable and has helped him so much. Ranmaru brushes off the compliments and says that worrying or feeling lost isn't a bad thing, it means that there's room for growth. What's important is the choices you make, because life is just an amalgamation of all your choices. They conclude that they'll be the ones to choose their own lives.
Chapter 5
Back to Ai and Camus. Ai notes that the song is quite different from Camus's usual vibe, and Camus answers that it opens a new door for him and he'll do whatever is asked of him if it's to please the fans. He talks about how he ended up becoming an idol: if his past self knew that he'd be working as an idol in a foreign country, he'd be really surprised. A lot of things have changed, be it his surroundings or Camus himself. He recalls that back in his homeland, he didn't have any real friends, and he couldn't even consider his own family as allies. Ai gets up and hugs him!! It's so cute that I made subtitles for this scene here. Ai says that he'd also like to hug all of their fans, but that's impossible, so they agree to put that feeling into the song instead. When they finish up, Camus confesses that Ai is really important to him, and Ai says he feels the same way.
Chapter 6
Ran to the Rei recording. Ranmaru is wondering about what he actually wants to do in life, then Reiji appears and tackles him (lol) Ran says that the recording session is going great, which makes Reiji happy. He comments that this ROCKIN song suits Ranmaru. That makes Ranmaru get stuck on the word "rock." He talks about how, unlike Reiji, he never set out to be an idol, and still doesn't think he's right for the job. Reiji asks him if he'd rather be in a band like in the past, but Ranmaru says no. Reiji goes on a little monologue about how you can't change the past, and that's why it's easy to have regrets, or to wonder if you should have done something differently. He asks Ranmaru if he's worried that he's not giving it his all as an idol. Ranmaru hesitates, so Reiji says he doesn't have to answer. Ranmaru simply says that his desire to sing has never changed. Reiji then does an imitation of Ran's voice with what he said in chapter 4, "just focus on the current song" and that makes him laugh. Reiji also adds that he might he might find the answer to his worries during the upcoming concert.
Chapter 7
God Love Keihou Hatsurei recording. Ai says that singing this song makes him wonder about love. The more you like someone, the more you want to know about them, and the more you want them to know about you. Camus says that that's a natural outcome when you become close. Ai asks him what he would think if someone was hiding a secret from a person they loved at lot. They can't tell them the truth, because it wouldn't solve anything, and they're scared of what would happen if the truth was out. It could suddenly create a rift between them. Camus relates to the guilt of feeling like you're deceiving someone. But he laughs (I got a heart attack) and says that everyone has secrets, including himself and all their fans. Sometimes there's no point in trying to know everything about someone, what's important is to understand each other and keep moving forward together. But it's true that you can become more and more greedy the deeper you fall in love. However, that's just how humans are, and it's a proof of love. Ai thanks Camus, but Camus replies that he only stated the obvious, and that Ai's voice is absolutely necessary for this song. So Ai declares that he'll try to convey the feeling "I'll love you forever" through the song. (I didn't run out of steam or anything, the last three tracks are under 2 minutes so there's not much to say)
Chapter 8
Reiji and Ranmaru are exhausted after the recording, and comment that the staging is going to be pretty difficult, but they want to perform in a way that'll surprise Ai and Camus. Ranmaru reminds Reiji that he'll need to work out to be strong enough for the live, and Reiji is like "Uhh, I just remembered I have to leave, byyyeeee!!" and the track ends with Ranmaru running after him.
Chapter 9
Ai and Camus are finished recording. Ai thinks that the "chu~" in Myu's low voice is impressive, considering the gap between that and his usual image. Camus takes it as a compliment. They bring up the fact that during the performance, they have to find a way to get as close to the audience as possible (I wonder what that will entail lol).
Chapter 10
Reiji claps for the group to congratulate them on finishing the duet songs, and Ai says they sound better than he could have imagined. They all discuss how they have to make this the best show ever, they can't wait to see the fans, etc!
#pERISHING#they're so cute#I'm glad we get a ton of them being Somft after faust's Drama (tm)#dgmw their bickering is also very fun#but I really love this style of interaction#anyway I definitely gotta go listen to this one#in conclusion: aaaaaaaaaa

aaaa Yamato's MV is so good!!! VERY fun choreography (and so many kicks!)
he looks...more like a video game model, somehow, than some of the others when performing his choreography. But I actually don't hate that? On the one hand, a little more attention to natural-looking movement would be nice, but on the other it feels like it's a reflection of his athleticism translated through the medium. I know the game is capable of more fluid movements, but their focus for Yamato is on big, flashy, dynamic ones instead. Idk, it's nice.

Had an absolutely wild series of gacha pulls this morning:
Pulled my second HEAVENS mikuji, it's Van again (Home Run-kichi, whee)
Pulled UR Eiji in the free new year's gacha
Oh hey look, I have 6 of the 7 original HEAVENS URs! Only Van left, I wonder how long it'll take to get him
Go do a gacha ticket 10-pull
SR right at the end flips to UR
It's the UR Van
so I have the full set of outfits for GLORIOUS ANGELS now, I guess?!? equal parts astounded and delighted, love it when the gacha luck is kind 🎉🎉🎉
#utapri live emotion#I have ridiculous gacha luck in general#but usually it doesn't work for me as well as it does when I pull for my friends#so this is unusual and very welcome!#but I guess it kinda counts#because I wanted the set for HEAVENS rather than myself in a way...? now they're matching in their very nice outfits#and I just think it's neat :3

congrats Ai for getting a mostly-normal outfit for his laser tag event wooo
(of course it's not actually a wearable outfit, but. y'know. at least it's normal on a card)
k, regarding the new piece gacha/event double-hitter, a couple quick questions:
why do Eiji's expressions/poses in the card art go that hard
why does Ai specifically so often get just. the weirdest outfits
#seriously is it so hard to dress him normally#that chess-themed one was amazing dgmw#but it's definitely on the flashier end for an outfit#and nothing else has really hit right yet

Nijiiro's UtaPri Fanfiction - Masterpost
So it turns out that I've written a lot of UtaPri fanfiction over the past few years. In fact, there's so much that it's all listed in Anonymous collections—I decided I didn't want it clogging up the rest of my Ao3 profile, and even making a pseud felt like it wouldn't keep them separate enough.
However, that means (for better or worse) that it's a bit harder than usual to find, so here's my solution to that: a masterpost of my UtaPri fanfiction to date, just in case anyone's interested.
Key:
(SL) indicates a fic based in some element of Shining Live canon (RIP).
(gen) indicates no (overt) relationships
ST☆RISH-centric
Of dubious veracity (SL, ~5k, Otoya/Tokiya, complete): A fic that asks how the stars of the Tokilock TV series would handle it if their characters started dating in the show. (So in other words, about 5k of Tokiya in crisis.)
unmasked (SL, ~3.5k, Natsuki/Syo, complete): A Darkmoon/Lightwing in-universe reconciliation fic (with added Kaoru, because Kaoru-reintroduction is a motif in my work in this fandom as a whole).
late blooms (SL, 2.5k, Tokiya/Natsuki, complete): In-universe continuation of the Strawflowers and Flossflowers series, in which "Natsu" is "Lord Toki's" butler and bodyguard. Getting-together fluff.
mirrors and windows (SL, 2k, gen Syo & Kaoru with hints of Cecil/Ai, complete): An in-universe sequel to the Desert Sea + Light of the Desert duology. (Kaoru-reintroduction is kind of the whole point of this one. Also, Ai is also technically in this fic, so it isn't *only* STARISH boys in here, but the STARISH characters are still the main focus so it stays here because I said so. Also also, I have no idea how Ai and Cecil started feeling like a viable ship in this one, but life finds a way I guess.)
pro indication (SL, ~1.5k, Syo/Haruka, complete): Based (loosely) on the Syo's Heart-Pounding Theme Park card SL, but also very much on Syo's True Love route in Repeat. In which Haruka's fears about Syo's limitations are thankfully unfounded. (I still think I fumbled this title tbh)
Quartet Night-centric
but if i[t] had to perish twice (~29k, gen QN, complete): Mind-the-warnings levels of angst in this one, which imagines what would happen if Ai started taking after his predecessor in terms of mental/emotional state. (DONE, finally)
rhopalia (SL, 1.5x drabble, Ai/Haruka if you really squint): A snapshot of a moment inspired by the Dreamy Aquarium Shining Live event. (This fic is teensy.)
Haunted (SL, 3k, gen Reiji & Ai, complete): Angsty oneshot bringing wider canon into the School Life Melody Reiji card.
our encore (SL, 2.5k, Ai/Haruka, complete): Theoretically inspired by the Ai's Joyful Birthday card story. First chapter is fluff, second chapter merits the E rating (smutty smut smut). Be warned.
HEAVENS-centric
Cloudy Skies, Rainy Days (~30k, gen HEAVENS, complete): In which each HEAVENS boy gets a chance to shine/suffer in a sickfic/hurt/comfort oneshot (though in Eiichi's case it's a twofer, because he and I are both dramatic). This could've been a series instead, if I'm being honest with myself, but then I'd need seven different titles and ugh. If I'm being honest, though, I'm damn proud of this set of stories.
Tipping Point (~4k, Yamato/Eiji, complete): A fluffy getting-together college AU fic I wrote for a gift exchange. Not a ship I would have tried otherwise, but they have a pretty cute dynamic.
Cross-Unit / Mix-and-Match specials
Setsugetsuka making-of cycle (SL, gen/full cast, 9.5k altogether, complete): A love letter to my personal favorite of the content Shining Live produced. This series of 3 fics focuses on Masato, Reiji, and Otoya respectively. (I actually used Ao3's series function correctly for these, hooray!)
lured by literature (SL, 5k, Camus/Tokiya, complete): I have no idea why this became one of my favorite obscure ships, but it absolutely did, and the The Lure of Literature story in SL is 100% to blame. Someday I may even revisit these dorks, because the BL chemistry between them is just that incredible.
scrape (SL, 2k, gen Ai & Tokiya, complete): In-universe coda to the Puppeteer's Workshop event story, featuring Lito and Luke protecting each other when danger strikes. (These two are both so dramatic. I love this event story so much.)
boards and bonds (SL, 2k, gen Ren & Ai, complete): Extra scene in the Winter Sports: Skiing and Snowboarding SL stories. In which Ren totally knows Ai's secret and is totally chill (heh) about it.
lights in snow (SL, ~1k, gen Reiji & Cecil, complete): In which Reiji is a good senpai. (This is also Winter Sports: Skiing and Snowboarding, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't get this fic and the previous one mixed up sometimes lol)
Bespoken (SL, 3k, Ai/F!reader OR Cecil/F!reader, complete): Would you like an in-universe reader-insert fic where two boys are flirting outrageously with you at once and it's up to you which one you're interested in? Enjoy. (This was a bit of a stretch to write, but in a fun way.)
Tuning the Kaleidoscope (3k, gen, any & all characters, abandoned): My attempt at prompt fills, both requests and randomized. I started writing these really early on and it's not my best work, but it was a fun as a way to do character studies. (This is another multi-chapter work that should probably be a series.)
...Aaand that's all for now! I've got some other bits and pieces kicking around in drafts—including a few sequels that've been on the back burners for a while, and at least one big-ass project that I got pretty far into without feeling ready to start posting it—but here's what I've published. I'm pretty happy with most of it and very happy with some of it, thank you very much for looking and I hope that if you follow some of these links you find something you'll enjoy. 🌈
