okay but if you ever see a male creative who had a string of great work and then everything else he did was dogshit, go to the "personal life" part of his wikipedia and look at his relationships. you'll either find a major tragedy he didn't recover from (completely understandable) or, more likely, there was a woman in his life doing uncredited shit editing his stuff or contributing generally and she's not there anymore.

I told a friend about this phenomenon in literature and he called me weeks later like, I remembered what you said about women doing uncredited work when tim burton came up. he made a string of bangers then everything else just was nowhere near as good. the timeline matches perfectly to when he was with this german visual artist (lena gieseke). he's done some good work in collaboration, but if things were dug into I suspect we would find she did a lot more than people realise.

so yeah whenever you look around like wow women didn't work in history, or, women aren't auteurs, or, there just aren't as many great female writers - societal reasons for that aside, half the time they absolutely did.

If I say "magic is real" I get a million people in my inbox telling me that god and Harry Potter are fake and that I shouldn't lie to people about sky fairies and casting fireball in real life.

If I say "magic isnt real" in get a million people in my inbox saying like "well what about this specific poetic interpretation of 'real' that could, in some cases be interpreted as yadda yadda yadda"

If I try to acknowledge the delineation between ritual praxis and a material belief in the supernatural, people go back to sleep because nobody on this website wants to read anything longer than a tweet. Or worse; they attribute any inarticulation on my part as evidence of some fundamental deceit. This is how my friend Arij feels. She is the sole provider for her children. She lives in gaza and has to face horrors everyday. And all she wants is to be able to feed her daughters Talia and Maryam. To do that she needs your help. Maryam is sickly and needs fresh food to reviver and prices are exorbitant due to Israel blocking any aid from entering gaza. Multiple times i have been the only thing keeping food in their mouth and enabling Arij to pay rent to keep off the street. But I cant do it alone.

Being the only person her babies have and carrying them through such horrors is a heavy burden on my friend. She often has to pretend to cook for her children when they're hungry in hopes to give them some solace. This clip she sent me encapsulates her desperation. Something I dont think is talked about often enough is how being impoverished creates people who are disabled/ chronically ill who will never be able to safely accommodate themselves.

If you cant afford to go to the doctor, you might just learn to deal with the effects of something instead of being treated. Delaying treatment can prolong issues or even exacerbate them in the long term. If people delay treatment long enough for it to escalate into something life threatening or where it requires EMS, then they go into medical debt.

when people talk about how punk was anti fascist since its inception it really bothers me, not because i dont think punk should be anti fascist, but because thats not true. weather you think punk stated stateside or in the uk, neither of the bands often seen as being the originators were inherently political outside of their anti authoritarian perspectives.

the stooges started because Iggy Pop, their lead singer, had just seen The Doors, Jim Morrison, the singer of the Doors, had been so black out drunk that night that it was like a spoken word performance, which inspired iggy to try and recreate this sound. iggy had previously been a petty criminal and a drug addict, but never exactly an activist.

the sex pistols were talent scouted by vivian westwood in order to promote and advertise her clothing store Sex in London, the pistols were also criminals and drug addicts, i think we all know where that story goes.

the rivisionist approach we tend to take surrounding the history of punk means that we have erased a lot of the work done by leftist punks in the 1980s in order to kick fascism out of the scene, which was largely done in reaction to the development of nazism in skinhead culture due to the national front in the UK. by simply saying that fascism has never been an issue and that punk can only be left wing, you are creating the conditions in which fascism becomes prevalent again.

Center harm, not disgust!

When in doubt (and when not in doubt, just swept by problems bigger than you and assured by someone that they know the answer, so don't think right now, just Do!), center harm.

Focus on what specific harm you're reducing with your actions. Make sure it's tangible and concrete. If your actions are minimizing hypothetical harm at the cost of real, tangible harm on others, 9 out 10 times you're on the wrong fucking side, being weaponized by propaganda.

If a conversation revolves around disgust as a driver for action, you're being radicalized. If a call to action depends on your emotional response, you're being manipulated. I'm sorry, this isn't the 90s anymore, social media has eroded the web of respectability of the pre internet society. The primary axis for misinformation to spread in this day and age is emotional response: half the things you believe are true and share as such are not based on fact, expert opinion or personal research. Social media has conditioned us (all of us! You and me and most dangerously of all, the idiots we put in power) that if something feels true, it probably is.

But do you know for sure it is? Do you think it's true because you have first hand experience or actual time spent on reputable sources learning it to be fact? Or just because it aligns with your worldview and it would be nice for you if it were true?

Are you taking action because you're angry and a group of fellow angry folk invited you to join them? Do you have a plan or is this just catharsis? Are you aware of the consequences of your actions or are you drunk on rage and focused only on the immediate future?

Center harm. Center specific actions and their consequences.

Discomfort is not harm. Disgust is not harm. Hypothetical paranoia is not harm.

The reactionary pipeline is real and your self-image as a progressive is not actually enough to save you from falling down the hole. Radicalization is not hinged on politics alone. Saying you're a leftist is worthless if your thought process and actions themselves are indistinguishable from qanon losers. Conspiratorial thought has literally no politics inherently, and your insistence it does is pure lack of critical thought on display.

Center harm, not feelings, not politics, not group think.

Center harm, and remember that individual actions cannot dismantle systemic structures on their own, so anyone who calls for individual action at the cost of community structures is not actually trying to change anything, and instead actively suppressing efforts to make anything better in any way.
