“Neva Gave A Fuck” by Kid Ink

Directed by Dan Centrone

Ok, wait.... Before I go into the outstanding lack of creativity behind Kid Ink’s latest song title; the monotony of the song itself; His fundamentally basic lyrics and the song’s utter dependence on what is another unsurprisingly catchy hook linked to a inarguably “hot beat;” I should make it apparent that a good music video has little to do with the song it’s matched to. However, the song should be good enough to make anyone want to sit through 3 mins of any visual attempt at appearing mainstream. The “hot beat” aside, Kid Ink has very little to offer in his latest attempt aptly titled Neva gave a fuck... Because clearly, he does not. Thus the kudos in today’s review will go completely and solely to the director, Dan Centrone. 

Dan has successfully managed to make Kid Ink appealing despite his predictable music. It is a glimpse into the dirty world of Philadelphia ‘hood life with sharp, clean cuts of the city proper paired with indigent children, stunt driven ATV’s and police vehicles; not to mention the city’s murals, corner stores and bridge overpasses. His performance cuts give him the look of a loner in a forsaken part of town, with the rapid moving camera chasing his wild movements amongst rubble and parked police cars. There’s even a guy riding a pony. 

Visually, Kid Ink himself offers little more than he ever does. Shirtless and displaying tattoos. And once again he’s dressed like a skater who wandered into south central LA; or in this case north Philly. even though Kid’s extravagant gesticulations make up for what he lacks in lyricism, it still isn’t enough to give him the star quality swag of artists like 2 Chainz who can effortlessly flail his way through a verse comprised of 2 syllable words, and still inspire visual awe. To Dan’s credit the color grades are true and the shots are gritty, artistically composed with intent. Kid Ink’s overexerted on-cam swag in conjunction with banal lines like “shawty on my dick”  kept me screaming, “we don’t believe you you need more people” (literally, he needs more people if he wants to authentically pull off tatted-up, lady-killing rager)! So in summation the b-roll was left to carry the video on it’s shoulders, with the performance shots coming in a very, very distant third.
