bread. i miss it. i want bread. a sandwich. extra bready. lots of bread. i'm tired of matzah. every year, i think it'll be the year where i find a way to enjoy matzah. nope. nothing will ever compare to actual risen bread.

hey what the fuck.
#very jarring to see this absurd take in the wild#my mom has this opinion and expresses it extremely loudly#she fully called me a nazi because i described judaism as an ethnoreligion#when i explained the concept of ethnoreligions to her she scoffed at me & implied that i MADE UP THE PHRASE ETHNORELIGION#i hope this doesn't come across as derailing!!#my intention is only to share an experience that i think is relevant#the fact that people feel emboldened to not only say this shit online but in real life is horrifying#cw antisemitism#tw antisemitism

For trans* people who are interested in religion/spirituality:
What advice would you give to your younger self or another queer person who is just starting to explore spirituality/religion?
#firstly: listen to people when they tell you that something is cultural appropriation#yes this goes for lilith worship. lilith worship will always be cultural appropriation of judaism no matter how cool it seems to you.#secondly: research as many streams/denominations of your chosen religion/spirituality as possible!!#i will be converting through reform judaism but i still researched orthodoxy and conservative judaism and renewal judaism#and reconstructionist judaism#thirdly: CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM DOES NOT MEAN POLITICAL CONSERVATISM!!#that's just a common name for the movement#it's also known as masorti judaism

i'm so excited to move off this stupid ass island and live in a place that has a jewish community
#i move into my university dorm in late august and should have my first meeting with a rabbi around that time#literally cannot wait#seriously it sucks so much living in a place with zero access to jewish education and jewish culture#i would be learning hebrew right now IF THERE WAS A SINGLE FUCKING HEBREW TEACHER IN MY WHOLE CITY#my city library's collection of jewish books is pretty scant too#there's a children's haggadah and a book about hillel the elder and a zohar that i feel like i'm not supposed to read

the theatre community online seems to have a real problem about speaking over jews
like i'll see so many posts of people asking "is playing [insert Jewish role here] okay to do? do i do an accent? what should i know?"
and then you see a flood of comments like "well, i'm not Jewish, but..." "i think it's fine! i'm episcopalian..." "jews are only 0.2% of the population, so they probably couldn't even find a jew to play the role, you're fine!" "i'm not jewish but i think anyone can play any role given enough culture and background knowledge (not racial stuff though!)" "i played [insert Jewish role here], you're fine!" "it's [fiddler on the roof/falsettos/etc] not actually that jewish of a show, it's universal themes that anyone can play!" "you just have to learn how to act more jewish, that's what acting is!" "it's the director's job to make sure it's culturally appropriate don't worry!" etc. etc.
and then you see some jews below like "there's nuance i think..." "this role specifically? no, but others maybe?" "hey i'm a bit uncomfortable that basically only non-jews have given you the green light..." "OP is only replying in agreement to those saying yes, and not to any jews oof" "i've been to so many shows filled with bad hebrew and stereotypes so idk OP" "[insert role here] is sort of a caricature and if non-Jews play them it feels kinda wrong" etc. etc.
#THIS THIS THIS#it's especially shitty bc jewish people are at the core of musical theatre#sondheim and schwartz and bock and harnick and bernstein and finn and menken are all jewish#yet so many people in the theatre world refuse to afford jews in theatre the respect they deserve#even if jewish people weren't pioneers of musical theatre it would still be fucked up to have such little care for jewish people in theatre#it's an extra level of disrespect to ignore/speak over jewish opinions on jewish roles

not to be wildly sappy but it genuinely means so much to me that in my little city that is virtually devoid of a jewish community, one of our most locally beloved cafes put up a happy hanukkah sign and is selling sufganiyot for the duration of the holiday. i never thought i'd see any acknowledgment of jewish people in my community, so even seeing a little bit of acknowledgment towards the most well-known (to nonjewish folks) jewish holiday made me tear up a bit.
just tried sufganiyot for the first time and i am a changed man

i cannot fucking believe this is now a hot take but it is never ever ever at all even a little bit okay to call any jew a nazi or compare jews to nazis, even if you disagree with them politically. it is beyond repulsive and disrespectful to make that comparison, and if you disagree with me then you should examine why you think it's okay to compare a tiny, oppressed minority to the people who committed genocide against them in living memory. i don't care if that random jewish guy online voted for trump, you still don't get to be a raging antisemite. grow up and develop some consistent morals.

Hi friends! I’m trying to make a magazine/periodical of joy in the Jewish community. There has been so much antisemitism and fear recently, and I think we should have things that remind us of the good of being Jewish. I’m taking submissions for the first edition already! The categories are:
Art: painting, drawing, poetry, etc.
Jewish Pet of the Month: bonus points if they’re wearing something Jewish or participating in Jewish traditions!
Opinion: Analyze or discuss a certain part of tradition or Jewish writing and what it means to you/your interpretation.
Memories: Historical heirlooms or photos of ancestors and any story about them you’d like to share!
Photos: General photos of tchotchkes and other things relevant to your Jewish life.
Joy: Happy events in your life, especially anything related to your Judaism.
Mazel Tov: A section for congratulating someone or giving a shout out.
The Convert’s View: From those in the process of conversion, a new thing you’ve recently learned about Judaism/your favorite part of being Jewish so far. I love hearing converts bring in new perspectives on things.
Tikkun Olam: Things you’re doing/have succeeded at for tikkun olam.
Crafts/Rituals: Basically hands-on things people can learn to do at home!
Food: A recipe for a Jewish food you enjoy.
Reviews: Review Jewish literature, movies, music, give recs!
I’m really excited for this project, and I hope we can make something everyone in the community can enjoy. :)
#op can i submit a picture of my dog in a kippah for jewish pet of the month#<- SECONDING THIS#the world needs to see my friend's dog in a kippah#it's the cutest thing ever
