Ok so Kyo is 1) strong 2) affectionate 3) not super good at words to express affection? 4) in love with a woman smaller and lighter than him 5) strong so what I’m saying is that once the curse is br*ken he spends 60% of his day plotting, planning, and executing ways to Scoop Tohru up in his arms, on his back, over his shoulder. To surprise her, when she asks to be held, because she’s carrying groceries and she looks like she’s had a long day, to move her from one place to another, because it’s raining and her shoes will get wet, he saw a cool lift in a dance video online and thought “oh I could do that”. And above all, because for the first time in his life he can hold someone to protect and love her. So he does. Tohru happily resigns herself to being held, scooped, and kidnapped by her boyfriend at all hours of the day. Thank you for your time.

Bob Morley as Prince Char
Okay. I have come to the rationalization that the face I should have been picturing for Char in Ella Enchanted should have been Bob Morley all along. Most people would know him from The 100 as Bellamy Blake. Honestly, I’m shocked I hadn’t seen it sooner.
Just for kicks let’s look at some quotes describing him.

You know what I want to see? A Netflix series remake of Ella Enchanted. Show me Ella talking to ogres. Show me Apple the dragon. Show me the trials she had trying to get to the giants’ wedding. Show me the sculpture Slannen made that her father was going to sell. Show me her experiences at finishing school. Show me her time slaving away at Dame Olga’s, with the prince trying to come see her but being shooed away by Dame Olga and the stepsisters. There could even be a season for Aza, from Fairest, since it’s set in the same world. That was a truly incredible story as well and I wish it got more attention. The movie version of Ella Enchanted sort of made a joke out of the whole story, like changing Slannen from this respectable elven artist into a enslaved Broadway performer who wanted to be a lawyer. The whole story wasn’t about Ella avoiding the popular prince charming until she fell for him, it was about a strong, independent woman who was his friend until it became too dangerous, because even though nobody tried, she was aware that her obedience curse could be used to destroy Char’s family and destroy the kingdom. The fact that they fell in love and got married in the end? Honestly, sideplot. The best parts of the story were the ones where Ella used her talents, and where she showed resilience and creativity in the face of dire adversity. The character, Ella, made the book. Not the Cinderella love story that it was modeled after. Just like Netflix took A Series of Unfortunate Events and made it better with a series, they could do the same with Ella Enchanted.

when I was a small Marzi, back in ye olden days c. 2000, I had a book. I had many books, but one in particular was special
it was called Ella Enchanted
the plot centered around this girl cursed to obey any direct order given to her by anyone. and she was brilliant, with a gift for languages and a winning sense of humor, dealing with man-eating ogres and oppressive finishing schools alike via her quick thinking. she frequently interacted with a prince over several years, falling in love with him slowly as she became the person who knew him best in the world. I knew it was an adaptation of Cinderella, but the fairytale plot points arrived so late in the story, that I already knew and cared about the characters by the time a ball and a glass slipper entered the picture
I read this book over and over again. somewhere in my parents’ house, there’s a copy with a cracked spine, dog-eared pages, and orange fingerprints from the Cheetos I took to school for snacktime every day. even now, 18 years later, I can recite lines from it without looking them up
four years later, a movie version was announced. it was all my friends and I could talk about, wondering how our favorite parts would be depicted. what would the boarding school look like, with the hedges shaped like “wide-skirted maidens” outside? Mandy, the kindly but firm cook/fairy godmother? the three glittering balls Ella attended for one last glimpse of Char after breaking his heart to save him from the risks of her curse?
finally the day came. our parents took us to the movie theatre, and we sat in the darkness as the screen lit up with the opening credits
to this day, I have never been so disappointed and disgusted with a movie in my life. this story I loved so much had been turned into a hokey one-dimensional cardboard cutout, filled with pseudo-medieval malls and fan clubs and other such nonsense- and worst of all, it expected me to take all that seriously. if it had been a straight-up comedy with no relation to the book at all, I might have enjoyed it, but instead it presented laughable situations and seemed to say “no, this IS the real, serious plot, and you have to care about it.” I left the theatre in tears, not the least because I realized that now there was no chance of a good Ella Enchanted movie in the future. that ship had sailed, singing Queen into the sunset
there’s really no point to this post. sometimes I just remember and get furious about the Ella Enchanted movie

You know what’s a better love story than Romeo and Juliet? Ella Enchanted. Not the film, the book. The story of a girl who falls in love with a prince then through her own sheer willpower and her love for the prince and her country overcomes magic. Fucking magic. This human girl breaks a fucking magic spell with her determination alone. And her prince only admires and respects her more for it.
