“You know Mockingjay always made me cry,” Cassie mumbled, thumbing at the tears in the corners of her eyes. This wasn’t anything like how this whole ‘I’m back from the dead’ scene was supposed to go, but then again, Cassie didn’t know how it was supposed to go. She’d contemplated for weeks just running off to the West Coast to find her friend when her mother and stepdad were being particularly stifling, but Cassie wasn’t that cruel. Her mom had lost her only child and there wasn’t a word to describe that kind of pain. She wouldn’t willingly leave her mom like that again.
“It’s – it’s real. It’s me, and I don’t… I don’t know how,” she stumbled through the words, willing herself to hold back, to not overwhelm, to be small without shrinking. “I just… I woke up and I was back and it’s been a year and – and you were gone. America was gone. The team was gone, and–” She took a deep breath. “Dad’s still gone. Whatever brought me back, it didn’t bring him too.”
Cassie forced herself to smile. “I hope I’m your good news, Hawkeye.”
Tumblr media
/
“I know,” Kate said quietly, as if she weren’t choking on her own emotions. “That’s kinda why I said it. A skrull wouldn’t know.” As if that were the only reason. As if she didn’t say it because she needed a response — some affirmation from Cassie or some spirit beyond them that this was really happening. The world worked in mysterious ways, but it was also... incredibly cruel when it wanted to be. Cassie dying on one of the few missions that Kate had lead, as if it were proving a point to her — and why? What was the point?
Tumblr media
Cassie’s death had been a comma, a pause before continuing — as if Cassie didn’t hit continue fast enough — but Kate was thankful for it. “I couldn’t stay.” Looking Cassie’s mother in the eyes after what had happened, Kate couldn’t do it. And she couldn’t stomach being on a team when the one person she needed to protect, she couldn’t. Being a hero, as Kate Bishop had often said, was great. Up until it wasn’t. Up until you were holding your best friend’s body in your arms and screaming at the universe, only to hear silence in return.
Taking a step forward, Kate threw her arms around Cassie, holding her tightly in a hug. “Better late than never, Stature.”

❛ this is an attack on me as a lesbian ❜
@multiversalasskicker
There were few scenarios that Kate wasn’t equipped to deal with on her own. (If she said so, at least.) And monsters from — outer space? Twilight zone? Whatever area of the universe they were from, America’s skill set was far more applicable. But when one creature became four, Kate shot America a half worried look… only to hear that in response. Groaning, Kate’s head bowed and she shook her head. “You can’t – you can’t just say that every time something inconveniences you!  You said that this morning when your Starbucks order was wrong. I’m starting to think you might just be a Karen, America.” Kate turned on her heel and loosed an arrow, it hit the mark with precision close to what Clint could do... but she knew it was just that. Only close... but not there. Not yet.

Admittedly, Damian has officially moved past the tier of ‘tired of’ people calling him short, or cute, or a baby, and into the tier of ‘unnecessarily irritated by’ fairly quickly in life. Even at 13, when he was older than Jonathan Kent but a few inches shorter, or 16, when he was old enough to ‘legally’ drive, people still mentally and emotionally crippled him with the words “cute” or “adorable.”
Poking him in the nose? Now that was a new one.
“Get your filthy hands off of me!” Damian swatted away gloved fingers, growling like some sort of rabid dog. “I’m not a child!”
Despite his protests, the girl was taller than him. Not by anything significant, but just enough to piss him off directly. He jabbed a pointed palm toward her solar plexus, speedy and efficient. She seemed to be stronger than he thought because his wrist ached when he pulled it back, despite his many years training in martial arts. “I will literally kill you,” Damian seethed, cheeks red under his domino mask.
Tumblr media
/
Kate knew that the mask was sacred. When they put on their uniforms and went out — there was this unspoken rule that was supposed to be respected. A distance that was supposed to be given so they didn’t look like a bunch of kids running around in costumes. But they were kids in costumes. And when things were serious, she was good at respecting boundaries. Right now, though? Nothing important was happening. And Kate… wasn’t good at sitting still.
But when she tapped Damian on the nose, and listened to him flounder — she almost laughed. There was a smile on her face up until Damian whacked her in the forehead. “Ouch!” Kate touched her forehead and frowned deeply at him. “Just because you’re mad doesn’t mean you get to hurt people,” she said before patting him on the head roughly. She knew it was more than enough to annoy him, but they were a team, which meant he’d have to learn to deal with it, eventually.
Tumblr media
(And they weren’t a half-bad one when they weren’t pressing each other’s buttons.)
Adjusting her glasses, Kate looked out over area they had been scouting out. It was a little exciting — trying to find the bad guys before the ‘big heroes’ got wind of them. What better way of proving how awesome they were than by stealing the thunder early? “I feel like this stakeout is a bust, Robin. How about pizza? Coffee? We can watch the street with food.”

Shuri raised a suspicious eyebrow. “I don’t know,” she replied, honestly. “I’m pretty new to New York.” And this universe, but it seemed pretty similar. “Do you plan to get hit by a bus? Or something else?” Call it a hunch, call it instincts, but Shuri was beginning to recognise some kinds of heroes when she saw them.
Tumblr media
/
Maybe she should have worded it different — she should have totally worded it differently. But she had already said it. And now she was looking at this girl and hoping that she hadn’t been too suspicious. (Ric would have never been this sloppy, she thought bitterly. Which wasn’t true — and she knew it, but right now, she was pretty sure he would have been laughing at her.) “Uh,” Kate fumbled right out the gate. “I mean — I don’t plan on getting hit — or throwing anyone under a bus, that would also go under the no category.” Kate cleared her throat and then put her hands on her hips, very officially. “I’m looking for a witness. That’s all.”

[ hit ] for KATE to attack MIGGY
@twentyninetynines
The best part of being Hawkeye was the arrows. There was no shame in the creative license she could take with her homemade arrows. As if she had any shame before — but now there was a sense of pride that went with each new one she thought up. And maybe, if she could figure out where she stood with Clint, maybe he’d use them in an official Avenger capacity. (Maybe he’d use them on an Avenger. And the idea of Tony Stark getting a suction arrow to the face was… well, it was fantastic.)
Kate had knocked an arrow, focusing on a suitable spot on the building to shoot it — the idea was that it would have enough hold to keep a line plus hold her weight if she wanted to swing from one location to another. That way her teammates wouldn’t have to, literally, carry her weight. She loosed the arrow and tipped her head to the sight as she watched the trajectory. It was perfect.
Until it wasn’t.
A stranger moved in the way — and Kate wanted to scream — what was he doing? In a spider-themed costume and making his way through her line of sight. She cupped her hands around her mouth, about to yell at him to move… but it was too late. The arrow caught him right in the face and Kate could only say: “Oh, futz.” Her hands fell and she looked at the stranger, wide-eyed and suddenly silent. What was she supposed to say? It wasn’t like she could have known some spider-stranger was going to swing into her way!
But she had to say something.
“Why would you stop there?”

“Do you have a crush on your boss?” Cassie teased with a grin. Jessica Jones was kind of a badass, and she was awesome at the job that Kate wanted to do, so Cassie could understand if Kate did. “Kate,” she said in much the same tone that her friend had said her name. “Woman cannot survive on twizzlers alone! But coffee? That’s a must.”
Tumblr media
/
Kate rolled her eyes but smiled all the same. “No,” she said adamantly. “I just recognize talent when I see it, I admire her, Cass.” But Jessica Jones was all kinds of awesome, but Kate had to find a line between admiring her new boss — and keeping a super cool distance so she didn’t fall victim of her own hype. After all, it was her job to make sure that Jessica took paying jobs. (Something that Kate was not good at. At all.) “Twizzlers and peanut butter, Cass. She’s got protein in her diet!” Because that was clearly the issue here.

immortalweapon:
As a kid, Danny had often been compared to a puppy. He trailed behind Ward no matter how nasty the older boy was to him, looked at Tony like he hung the moon in the sky, did whatever Sharon told him to do the second the words left her mouth time and time again. Danny had followed the people he loved around like they might lead him to the secrets of the universe if he stuck with them long enough, but in all that time, there’d only ever really been one person who gave him similar treatment.
Kate Bishop looked at Danny like he was the one with the answers. She followed him around galas, mimicked him when he snuck food wrapped in napkins into his pockets, giggled every time he told a joke even when Joy had already told him the punch line wasn’t very funny. He’d always felt important when she followed him like that. And when he was gone, and there was no one left to follow him, he’d felt smaller. He’d felt less important.
So it was good to have her back. She wasn’t the same wide-eyed kid she’d been back then, but neither was Danny. They were both world-worn now, both tired and broken in ways that wouldn’t be easy to fix, might not be possible to fix, but they were still here. They were still in Danny’s office, Kate sprawled on the floor and Danny cross-legged next to her, and Danny felt more important than he had since he was nine years old with her trailing behind him at parties. He was the majority shareholder of one of the most profitable companies in the world, and none of it made him feel as important as a girl barely out of her teens laying in his floor and talking about ghosts.
“I never saw any ghosts there,” he replied, brow furrowed. If ghosts were real, there were probably a slew of them in that brownstone now. His parents, Harold… did ghosts haunt the places where they’d died, or the places where they’d lived? Danny had never been sure. “You want to try to catch a ghost?” He repeated, sounding intrigued. “What would we do with it, Kate?”
Tumblr media
/
Ghosts, Kate had found, came in all forms. Some people could be right next to you but so far away that they were gone — but the ones that Danny and Kate faced? They were real ghosts. People long since passed, leaving holes in their lives — ones impossible to fill. And if Kate knew anything about Danny, he was like her, not even trying to fill those spots in his heart or his life because that felt... wrong, on many levels. So the gaps remained, the people they lost were still gone and the wounds always remained. They could claim that they were scars now, wounds that had healed over — but Kate knew that they would always be sore spots.
“You can’t always see them,” Kate stated talking as if she were an expert in ghosts. “You can feel them sometime — like... I don’t know, it’s like, you can be in a room and know something or someone is around you. Like — like faith, okay? You feel it and you believe in that? Ghosts are just like that.” Kate crossed her arms on the ground rested her head there, watching Danny while she tried to convince him that ghosts were real — and something worth looking at. Anyone on the outside would look at her and wonder who she was trying so desperately to hold onto. They’d question her and try to tear apart this idealistic thought she had about ghosts. But Danny had never been like that. He sat next to her, looking at her intently as if she held the secret to something he had never considered  before.
Did he believe? Or had he lost so many people that he took as trying to cling to some hope that they were still around, watching them in the ways that people told them about? Kate closed her eyes and imagined her mother. Imagined Cassie. Imagined — Danny’s parents. Harold. She imagined what their families must look like as ghosts while wondering where their parents might haunt.
Tumblr media
“Just think about it, Danny,” Kate sat up immediately, facing Danny and looking him in the eye, very seriously. “We could take the bad spirits out of houses and protect people! Super heroic. And after —” After? She hadn’t thought that far. Keeping them in a jar sounded in humane (could it be that when they were ghosts?). “Help... it... uh,” Kate touched her nose and tried to think up something, anything, so that she didn’t look like a fool. “We could put bad ghosts in a... ghost jail? And the good ghosts we can reunite with their family or help them find peace so they can move on!”

Giving nicknames was one of Lucifer’s favorite pastimes, but he usually did it as a way to mock someone. A person giving themselves a nickname took away a good deal of his fun. “Ooo, nice threat! Though you’re going to have to try really hard to do anything to my face. Other than make me smirk more.” Ah, and now she was accusing him of doing the same thing. Naturally humans just could never grasp that he was telling the absolute truth. “Sure, because everyone is just clamoring to have my role, aren’t they? I don’t recall anyone ever trying to apply for my job while I was ruling Hell, but I certainly would have given it to them if they had!” A porn name? Lucifer was not sure whether to be offended or flattered by that. Or worse…was there actually someone in the porn industry using his name? “What? Don’t tell me you’ve seen porn starring someone with my name? Because either I need to sue for defamation, or I need to sue to get the profits if someone has been selling one of my sex tapes. I’m not positive any exist, mind you, but I wouldn’t be surprised.”
Tumblr media
/
The look on Kate’s face was of pure exhaustion. He was doubling down on this idea that his name was Lucifer — and all Kate could think was that his parents must have really hated him. “There are a lot of freaks out there, Lucifer — how about I just call you Furfur or something? Because I can’t say Lucifer without having flashbacks to when Twilight was popular and I really, really don’t want to relive that fad.” Kate knew that was likely very rude, after all, telling an older man that he reminded her of a bad tween drama? Not exactly flattering. “No — that’s not what I meant! I meant your name is like, a stage name that people would use. Because it’s fake and you know, based biblically so you’ve got a nice layer of religious guilt in there which would be ironic and —” Kate snapped her mouth shut and crossed her arms. “I wouldn’t watch any porn with you in it.”

ofromcnovas:
Someone was using his name.
Names, Natasha knew, were not sacred. She’d stolen more than her fair share – was known by plenty of others. Natasha Romanoff was what Ivan would call a bastardisation of what her parents named a baby that she didn’t recognise as herself even in one charred photograph. Black Widow was a slur until she turned it into a title. Names meant nothing, just as people had no place, not really. They were temporary distractions.
But someone was using his name. That changed things.
There were some key differences, of course. She moved differently, seemingly from an alternate route of training (self taught, for some of it – learning from mistakes). She was a she. She was younger. But she was just as chaotic, just as determined, just as likely to piss off the mafia …
And she was using his name.
Natasha almost found herself respecting the girl as she watched her put down the last of the group. She’d been tailing her for a while, now, and she seemed aware of Natasha’s presence, which was rare – but Natasha had years on her side. The second she spotted an opening, she cocked her gun, training it neatly at the woman’s back. “I would advise not trying to fight back right now,” Natasha said, voice low. “Turn around, slowly. Hands where I can see them – and tell me who the hell you think you are.”
Tumblr media
Kate had been watched before. There was a feeling that came with it, a fear that crawled up her spine and caused her hair to stand up on end. And she felt that here. Had felt it for the last block while she was chasing these guys down — but she couldn’t place the presence. She had chanced a glance over her shoulder a few times and had found nothing in turn. But that feeling, it never went away. She had been followed and watched before, but never by someone as good as whoever this was.
The fear caused her to move quicker. Her movements quickly becoming less fluid and closer to manic. Trying to finish this fight off before whoever it was that was following her, decided it was time to ambush her. (In her mind, she was already trying to figure out how quickly she could pull her phone out, who would pick up the quickest — who would be there the quickest. What was her move?)
But as she knocked the last guy, she felt the gun in the small of her back and Kate froze. No matter how quickly she could have done any of those things — it wouldn’t be faster than the bullet in the chamber of that gun. All the training that she had done, all the promises she had made to herself to never be helpless again. This wasn’t like she had fought this person and they had simply been better than her — though they were better at hiding than she had ever been. Coming up from behind with a gun — smart too. Kate never had a chance.
Raising her hands up, Kate kept her bow in hand — the only way she was dropping that was if she dropped. She was face to face with Natasha Romanoff. An Avenger. And all quips about her being Hawkeye and basically an Avenger were out the window. “I think I’m Kate Bishop? No, I mean I am Kate Bishop. And Hawkeye. Not Hawkguy.”
Tumblr media
The gun was still in the air, but she was an Avenger — she couldn’t just kill her, right? But the humor... that wasn’t going to help, was it? So, Kate started talking. “My name is Kate Bishop and I’m twenty-one. My best friend died on a mission I was leading. I ran away from New York afterwards,” Kate started rambling, with no signs of stopping. The information, itself, while all true, had no real importance. Kate was using it in the hopes that Natasha Romanoff would be distracted. (That was possible... right?) “I left all my friends and family behind, and when I came back, my best friend was somehow alive.” As she spoke the last part, Kate moved quickly, moving to grab the gun and force it upwards and away from her body.

“ how did we end up here? ”
@multiversalasskicker
Kate rolled her eyes. “Why are you saying it like that? Like this some terrible burden that you, America Chavez, must jump between universes to avoid. While you were out there exploring your different versions of pizza, we were making dank memes here, Chavez.” She flipped through a few more videos and then quickly scooted closer to America. “Look —” she glanced at America and then elbowed her friend hard in the ribs. “I said look!” On her phone was one of many videos she had saved — this one featuring her personal favorite, it or miss.
