I do love that a core theme across director new's ensemble college shows is that being in love is great but your friends WILL clown you for it mercilessly and you WILL deserve it.

it is so deeply funny to have spent the last while seeing so much doomsaying about gmmtv obviously pivoting to bromances at the expense of bls and how they never spend any money on their queer shows only for gmmtv to release a slate of SEVENTEEN qls alongside only ONE confirmed het show, at least one if not more of which is clearly going to be high budget.

marks out of ten
my watchgroup and i were watching jack & joker ep 11 this week, and as tends to happen when we're nearing the end of a series, we started talking about how we were going to eventually rate it on mdl. we mostly have broadly overlapping taste in shows but different rating ~philosophies~ so it's an interesting conversation to have sometimes.
i'm new to mdl, but i've been rating on goodreads for years, and that has the same basic system, though theirs is more restrictive, and for that I got in the habit of trying to be reasonably objective about ratings - there are books i don't personally enjoy but i can still tell are well-written, and i tend to round up in those circumstances. the thing about bls though, is that there is sometimes a pretty wide chasm between "did i enjoy watching this" and "do i genuinely think this is a well-made series of television" that a lot of shows fall into the middle of. (i've said i'd love a graph instead, where i can rate stuff both on how good it is AND how much i enjoyed watching it on separate axes and see how that goes)
after looking over my existing ratings, i came to the conclusion that i mostly rate on a scale of "would i recommend this show to someone else" across three broad bands, and then within those the nuance tends to be a little more subjective. i sometimes go back and re-rate stuff when i've seen newer things, but nothing so far has crossed into a different bands that way, just moved up or down inside the layer. I'm also lucky that so far i haven't watching anything truly terrible.
basically, it comes down to this:
10, 9: I would rec this show to basically anyone.
10 is reserved for shows where I finish them and I'm just like, that was perfect, no notes. sometimes there's minor things i'd fiddle with a little, but on the whole it's a show that I don't think needs anything to make it better. (examples; cherry magic th, we are)
9 is for shows where i finish them and i'm also like, that was perfect, but. It's usually a show where there is one or two specific things that i would change to bump the show higher, but nothing significant enough i'd feel the need to flag in advance. (for a lot of shows this is pacing issues/other narrative balance stuff) (examples: wandee goodday, my school president)
8, 7: i would probably rec these, with caveats
there isn't as much of a clear line between 8 and 7 as between 10 and 9, so it mostly comes down to how many caveats i would have to give before reccing it (and how many bls the person has previously watched) 8s tend to mostly be shows with one specific deficit that I think needs actual addressing and 7s tend to be shows that need multiple things done to make them better. This band is where i've used half-stars the most, and the range from 7-8.5 is pretty wide in terms of but how good is this REALLY? (examples: enchante, semantic error)
6: i would not rec these outside very specific circumstances
These are all older shows that just don't really compare to newer stuff in terms of quality. I'd probably only rec them to someone who was a big fan of one of the actors or who specifically wanted to watch more older bls, and I'd have a long list of things I'd mention in advance. I enjoyed many of these shows! I will probably go on to watch other shows that end up in this bracket that I will also enjoy But they're not like, good. At best they're usually a decent idea with not great execution, or a lot of choices made during the production that just make it hard to watch. (examples: puppy honey, tonhon chonlatee)
Luckily i have yet to watch anything I'd rank lower than this, but there is always tomorrow.

The best thing about Junior, is that he is a sweet little baby, and also a huge, petty bitch.
I love him.

Y’all will kick and scream when your faves don’t get a project every time they release the lineup and wonder why the company have to rush the series to keep up with the demand. Look at what happened to wandee good day, the show was airing while it was filming, of course the editing was all over the place and don’t be surprised if the same issues show up in the heart killers; it was on the 2024 part 2 lineup and it’s already airing. On one hand you have money hungry company like gmm rushing to capitalize on the fans; on the other hand you have fans who will riot if their fave take a break; the result is rushed script, rushed editing, and sound mixing issues.
Which also explains why shows who take longer to be produced are fleshed out more; it’s not because gmm invest more in het shows (have y’all even seen the het shows gmm produce? they’re rarely edited well, try watching the jungle 🤡🫵🏿).
