June 7th 1954: Alan Turing dies
On this day in 1954, the British mathematician and scientist Alan Turing died. Turing is considered the father of computer science and artificial intelligence with his invention of the ‘Turing machine’ - a precursor to the modern computer. He was also a crucial part of England’s code breaking team at Bletchley Park during World War Two, developing ways to interpret German messages from the Enigma machine. The work of Turing and his fellow code breakers was a great boost to the Allied war effort, supposedly shortening the war by as many as two to four years. However, in 1952 he was arrested for homosexuality - which was still illegal in Britain - and accepted chemical castration rather than prison. Turing suffered side effects from the treatment and two years later died from cyanide poisoning, supposedly from an apple found by his bed. Whilst some claim it was accidental, an inquest determined Turing had committed suicide due to the persecution he suffered. In 2009, following a popular online petition, Prime Minister Gordon Brown issued a posthumous apology to Alan Turing.
“We’re sorry, you deserved so much better”

Can you believe that the FDA has now approved a drug that millions of people take? It’s amazing to think of how far the world has come with technology. This means the drugs made will be easier to consume and more effective to use as part of a regular medication schedule.

SAMSUNG’S NEW GEAR VR COMMERCIAL BRINGS NORMALITY TO VIRTUAL REALITY
Samsung’s new 30-second ad for the Gear VR doesn’t convey much of a sense of excitement, but instead presents the device as just another screen for doing normal things on.
Virtual reality is kind of geeky, says Samsung’s ad, but hey, you can still watch Kung Fu Panda on it.

War Tax Resistance: Hobby Lobby, Bitcoins, and The Peace Tax Fund
What would happen if we started using something like Bitcoins to pay our taxes? Bitcoins generate a unique code and they are also trackable. Shouldn’t we then (in theory, at least) be able to track exactly when and where and how our tax money is being used, if we could utilize a similar system? The IRS could (again, in theory) set up their own version of crypto-currency and you would then be able to view your balance online.

History of Sam Goody
Sam "Goody" Gutowitz (1904-1991) of New York City opened a small record store on New York's 9th Avenue shortly after the advent of vinyl long-playing records in the late 1940s. Although he did some retail business, most of his volume was in mail-order sales at discount prices. He became something of a folk hero among penniless college students as the first successful large-scale LP discounter.
Later, The Sam Goody name was applied to a chain of record stores established in 1951. The stores were located all over the US and the UK.

It’s amazing how a compact fluorescent bulb is in most houses today because they save energy. One fact many people do not know is that they have mercury in them. If one drops this kind of bulb without knowing the danger that lays in these bulbs one would inhale the mercury in the bulb and increase the risks of many illnesses.

“Video of a mysterious cityscape in the clouds hovering over a Chinese city has gone viral this week. And explanations for this startling video range from a secret NASA project to an elaborate hoax to an actual atmospheric phenomenon.Experts hesitate to say the video is real. "It looks almost too good," says Peggy LeMone, an atmospheric scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado."[But,] if it is real, it's called a superior mirage, which just means it's an upward projecting mirage," says Jill Coleman, an atmospheric scientist at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. It could be something called a fata morgana, she says, which is a certain kind of atmospheric mirage.” - http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/10/151020-city-sky-china-mirage-fata-morgana-weather-atmosphere/
