Happy New Year! I didn’t forget about this blog but since my last post, I’ve gotten back into playing the Sims and LifeAfter and I also started studying Japanese again and all of that basically takes up all my free time so I barely have time to read BL  (╥_╥) I did try to catch up since New Year’s and I’m glad to see that some of the comics I had my eye have gotten English translations (either official or fan-done). 

Also, during my mini-hiatus, I started translating this manga:

The scanlation team that had been working on it only released 4 chapters before they stopped being active a year+ ago. There’s over 5 or so more chapters left. It’s a really funny story with non-toxic/problematic characters and I wish more people knew about it. 

Unfortunately I’m very lazy by nature and it’s hard for me to stay focused and motivated for long periods of time so I started cleaning and translating a few pages then stopped cuz I got bored of cleaning lol. Plus I stopped paying for Photoshop so I’ve been using Pixlr and it’s so much harder to use plus I can’t figure out how to draw on it using a pen tablet so I can’t even do my best cleaning (;﹏;) It’s gonna take a long while but I’m gonna try to complete the rest of the chapters this year. I was trying to create an Indian sim and idk man, she just looks like an ambiguously ethnic white Victoria Secret model (≧▽≦) But she's probably one of the prettiest Sims I’ve ever created so I guess I’ll keep her.

And this is my character in LifeAfter. She’s so pretty and sweet looking here but a hot 2000s era emo mess in game ╥﹏╥ You gotta pay to redo your face so I’m stuck with her like this lol.

This time the title caught my eye. I fell down a rabbit hole looking up うしみつ and now I’m so intrigued about the premise of this story.

This is a fluffy and cute mystery about a landlord who "changes into a child" × a graduate student with a one-sided love♪

-----Translation Notes-----

*specifically from 2am-2:30am; I’m sure the phrase うしみつ comes from  丑三つ時 which translates to “ third quarter of the hour of the ox”. The phrase comes from when Japan used to count time by using the Chinese zodiac. Here’s an English article giving more info about it. 

Basically there are 12 Chinese zodiac and each animal was assigned 2 hours of the day hence “hour of the ox” “hour of the rat” etc. The hour of the ox is from 1am to 3am. Each animal’s time period is further divided into four 30-minute parts. 

The idea that ghosts appear during 丑三つ時 comes from the ancient Chinese belief in 陰陽五行 - the cosmic dual forces (yin and yang) and the five elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth) which exists in everything. According to the idea of 陰陽五行: 丑, the hour of the ox (which also represents the north-northeast) is yin and 寅, the hour of the tiger (which also represents the east-northeast) is yang, and 丑寅, the northeast (3 am) which is in the middle, is in the direction of the gate of oni (Japanese ogre-like demons). In other words, it is the direction in which oni enter and exit so it was believed that 丑三つ時 had a close relationship with the gate of oni. 

丑三つ時 is the eerie time when people, creatures and vegetation in the natural world sleep and shadows are strongest which is the reason why ghosts appear and remain so strong. The hour of the ox has long been said to be the hour that leads/is open to the world of the dead. There are also stories of people doing rituals at 丑三つ時 to fulfill wishes or curse.

I guess this is why 丑三つ時 is translated as “the witching hour” in some Japanese-English dictionaries and it’s probably a big clue as to how Mr Elegant Landlord transforms into a kid lol

This book popped up on my timeline and I immediately clicked on the link. Unfortunately, it’s a novel so I'm not going to provide an in-depth summary like I do with mangas that pique my interest. Bl novels rarely get officially licensed and unofficially translated and I’m certainly not gonna do it lol. I’ve translated magazine articles before and I felt like how Golem looks when I finished lol.

I just wanted to bring attention to the art on the front cover!!! I thought maybe it was a translation of a Chinese novel but I looked up the empire that uke governs and couldn’t find anything so maybe the story is set in a fictional world inspired by Chinese historical fantasies. 

According to the summary, uke is a beautiful and kind young prince who’s empire is being terrorized by monsters and seme is the shogun who will go off and clean those monster’s clocks and tell them the time. The prince is ordered to spend one night with the shogun as his “bride” (aka bumping uglies) as a reward for risking his life. After defeating the monsters, the injured shogun, unable to forget the prince, returns and wants to be with the prince. Also, there’s a line from seme where he refers to himself as a dog plus he has long canines on the cover so maybe he’s some kind of kemono??? 

The writer is Miyao Aoi and the artist is Epo. The art style (especially the seme) reminds me of Michinoku Atami whom I love love LOVE! I wish this were a full manga instead of just a novel cuz I wanna see those historical fantasy outfits! The only reason why I read Bride of the Water God was solely to ogle the gowns. I don’t even remember what happens in the story lol but I remember the MC’s gowns and headdresses.
