turn: washington’s spies character appreciation, abigail + season 1
working on turn was truly amazing—one of the best experiences of my life. period pieces favorite kind of work to do because i can’t make any assumptions or presume firsthand experience with who these people are. in preparing for the role, i wanted my research to focus more on examining aspects of their lives outside of the pain of captivity—like how they coped, loved, and what they did to find joy. —idara victor

“I think that, like many people growing up in America, you have a vague idea of the Revolutionary War and a sense of us against them and David and Goliath, and you get a basic idea of the big battles and then the outcome. You know about Paul Revere and that sort of thing. Beyond that, I’ll admit I was pretty ignorant to most of the details, but learning about this stuff and reading Alexander Rose’s book and reading the scripts and reading all this information about the time period, particularly about the spy ring, it’s been extremely fascinating, just really interesting to learn. And then the excitement for me as an actor, getting to tell a story that isn’t very well-known and getting to tell about these people who nobody really knows about, the heroic acts that they did. It’s really cool.” - Seth Numrich

turn: washington’s spies character appreciation, caleb brewster + season 1
the great thing about playing a real person is that you get a set of circumstances that you can base your ideas and character upon — you don’t have to make it up yourself. with caleb, history tells us that he was a guy with a lot of bravado, confidence and zest, a guy that wasn’t afraid to take on the british. we took that into building our version of the character. i find it very helpful when you can base a performance on a real person. i don’t know if i’m a funny guy or not, but caleb definitely has a sense of humor compared to the other characters. he has a joy for life, and he’s an adrenaline junkie. he sees the world differently. it’s not a game to him, but he does enjoy a challenge and tries to make the best of every situation.  –daniel henshall
