this is just a random musing in the void to someone who has interesting thoughts on ffxiii becuase a LOT of ink has been spilled on ships with regards to lightning herself in the gam,e and while i personally do see her as a lesbian, none of the popular ships for her in the fandom or her viable options really work to me ahah, the best are usually random crossover ones like i dont know, terra.
but like. imo the best xiii lightning ship is actually lightning x etro. i mean it has all the hallmarks of a mythological romance tale its like pluto and proserpina but the kidnapped woman is actually a knight and the lord of hell is actually a lady she swore her life to so it's ACTUALLY a chivalric romance also there are snow x serah parallels given etro is just a crystal throne by xiii-2
I love random musings! I also like and prefer Lightning's F/F ships. She is also a lesbian to me.
Thinking about it, there are some parallels between Etro and Lightning. They're both:
Daughters who feel some level of/feel resentment towards their fathers. Though, Lightning's gripe is that her dad was unreliable... like Snow (haha).
Young girls who were entrusted with roles greater than either of them could comprehend by a mother/motherly-figure (Mwynn). Lightning, who assumed a role as a parent to Serah (though this was more of a result of her poorly coping with their parents' deaths). And Etro, tasked with protecting the balance between the two realms and managing the chaos.
Yeul and Lumina both representing the lost childhood that neither Etro nor Lightning could enjoy. I've always wished these two met in DFFOO.
Etro entrusting Caius (a father figure) to protecting Yeul; while entrusting Odin (who is also considered to be father-like, said in an interview) to Lightning. Like, the implication that Etro sees herself in Lightning...
To assuage her loneliness, Etro dedicated herself to saving humans, resulting in her death. Lightning also focused on saving others and almost suffered a similar fate in LR.
And I always liked that Etro condemned Lightning (and others) for killing humans. So, there's something there. Like:
Two, deeply, lonely women, who hurt themselves for the sake of the people they loved; but not realizing it was only causing further pain. One of them who, initially, despises the other for her acts of killing, yet needs her to carry out her will. The other, the only human, who understands her deep pain and teaches her the names to those emotions. And maybe, just maybe, they could both heal from the scars left on their hearts.

oh man yes i love lumina yeul parallels omg. it's also interesting that bhunivelze got a little mini-me himself by stealing hope's heart and his face ended up looking like hope's. so you have these three gods or nearly-gods who all have these little human bodies. i'm also thinking about how this could relate to barthandelus' guise as galenth dysley now too, idk if theres anything there. man i love ffxiii
Oh yes, Bhunivelze stealing an entire body belonging to someone he can’t relate to at all.
Like, the god who killed his own mother possesses the soul of a boy saved by his — and who is shaped by all the women in his life! And said boy who also, initially, disliked his father for being absent (just like a certain shitty god).
Given Bhunivelze is a patriarchal figure, like. It make sense for Barthandelus choosing to represent himself as a crusty old man.
