FFIV x LANCER ttrpg
incredibly niche crossover of interests, but i've been thinking about FFIV characters and the mech frames that would best fit them from a mechanical and narrative standpoint. Some notes on builds included! Baron trio goes first.
Cecil Harvey: Horus Calendula -> SSC Orchis
The Calendula
Tumblr media
Starting off strong with Cecil, and two frames that belong to the Karakkis expansions. The Karakkis frames are all about regency, and includes a lot more medieval aspects in their designs. They also have a lot of melee options-- making them perfect fits to pick from.
The Calendula is a frame that is an alternate of the Minotaur, a Controller frame that dabbles into Defense. The first in the series of images above, it also is themed around intangibility and pushing enemies closer to yourself. With your Tech attacks, which I would say is close to magic in this scenario, you can bring enemies closer to yourself to pummel. You can also spawn dark husks from these attacks to make your enemies intangible, along with making yourself intangible. Very close to our lovely friend Darkness. Despite being tanky, the Calendula is a controller, not a Defender. Interestingly, I feel like this really shows how a Dark Knight is different than a Paladin: As a Dark Knight, you're expected to continue to destroy rather than just protect. I sometimes think about the "dissolving" of Mirror Cecil paired with the intangibility. HORUS mechs are something to be feared, as well... I could see a pilot Cecil concerned about using a passive called "Execrate."
The Orchis Compared to the Calendula, the Orchis is a much more defensive mech. Here is its sprite-- it even has a shield!
Tumblr media
The Orchis is a Defender/Controller. Controller not in the sense that it uses tech attacks to control the battlefield, but instead, has many reactions to protect and move with allies. Its frame traits are "Perfect Parry," "Guardian," and "Royal Guard," all fitting the reactions described above. Guardian even gives adjacent characters hard cover, which I think is close to the Protect move in-game! Visually, it also sheds the dark hues of the Calendula.
Build Notes: I think the House Guard talent would also give Cecil more of that support Paladin has in-game-- it increases range of Guardian, and allows you to attack if a character nearby has cancelled an attack. Bonded literally allows you to cover your bondmate, as well, which in the context of the other two... well.
Rosa Farrell: SSC Emperor
Tumblr media
This choice felt destined from the get-go. The Emperor features strong support from its ability to grant Overshield, which would be the closest thing you could get to healing in Lancer. Overshield gives you, effectively, temporary HP. It also features a massive bow, and drapes that resemble Amano's designs. How could I not? The Emperor features low HP-- two is absurdly low, even when you technically have four sets of two to burn through-- but makes up for it for said Overshield, granting it to yourself and those around you. In the start of a round, you actually get a large bonus to Overshield, which can be burned through fast. I could see this to being similar to Rosa running out into the desert from her strong ambition to meet Cecil. Said bow, when fired in a line, also grants more Overshield to allies it grazes along its path. Imagine Rosa shooting an arrow by you and healing you.
Build Notes: Bonded also could apply for support aspects. It's a lot more difficult to translate raw support classes into talents, but Grease Monkey can offer more repairs.
Kain Highwind: ISP-N Nelson
Tumblr media
The Nelson is a frame whose entire focus is on going fast and gaining melee attack and movement bonuses your next attack if you did choose to go fast. As seen in the picture, the class literally comes with a massive war pike, awfully similar to our Dragoon friend. With a high base Evasion of 11 and solid HP, the Nelson can still take a forward position without losing its signature momentum. In fact, that's the name of the frame trait that allows it to gain +1d6 extra damage to melee damage if it chooses to boost. However, doing this with its high speed and ability to move after attacking can leave it very stranded on the field.
The Nelson also has a very low E-Defense of 7, making it easily hacked and controlled by more tech-savvy mechs. In a game where puppeting a mech's system is a common move in some frames, Kain is still not safe from the double-betrayal. You're doomed in any universe. Sorry, Kain!
Build: Here's where things get fun. Due to systems that you can add to your mech to allow you to boost upward and the Tactician's Solar Backdrop ability that gives you accuracy from being above ground, you could, if your DM is very nice, recreate the Jump skill. Live your dragoon dreams!

Another old, this time unfinished comic from a year ago. The art is dated but I still adore the colors. I was trying to encapsulate the utter hopelessness and helplessness I felt at the start of the World of Ruin that I imagine Celes herself also felt. It all seemed so desperate, like you're running on autopilot, simply witnessing this new twisted world. A really impactful atmosphere, to say the least. The comic was going to span another few pages and take a sadder turn, but I never got around to it. I'll certainly get around to it eventually since I still like the idea.

I was discussing Baron Trio with a friend over on bluesky and exceeded the character limit in replies, then realized I could succinctly illustrate my point with a single shitpost and figured I might as well share here too
