Pop Art Portfolio App (PAPA)
I would love to have an art app that isn't about old artists, art history and techniques. I would like one where both art students and teachers could use it as a current library for the latest and hottest artists from all over the world but is geared towards students and teachers. So everything would be filtered already for students to browse.
I find it hard to teach art history because students are interested in the now, not the past and typically a lot of the old masters that were mainly white and males. Students want todays news, fast, and quick. They want to know what is currently happening and how the can either get involved or advance it further with their own inspirations. So with my app I would like to have people able to access and upload to it from all over the world. Everyone looks at different artists, so I don’t want just museums posting what they regard as art but small galleries, art schools, and artists as well. I want the subjects and artists to be current, talking about topics that are going on in the world right now. I want students to understand that their are so many artists, styles, mediums, tools, stories, and more to tell that anyone and everyone can make art. I want them to see it happening and believe in themselves.
In the app their will be the artist, artist statement, title, date, location, medium, and background. You must include a link to a website, blog, or some sort of online hub so people can view your portfolio. You can locate the artist through categories of art or just search through categories, mediums, or location. All artists will be welcome to add their own images but they will need to fill-out all of the information and have a website to direct the viewer to.
Their will be a separate space for teachers to share lessons, student work, and more in the app. Like a news feed section. Teachers can post work and those artists can essentially log on and see how they have inspired others. They could even comment if they want.
I asked a few people what their thoughts are and they think it is a good idea but that I am incorporating to much at once. One person said “Isnt their already an app that does that?” Yes, their is an arts and culture app but that has its limits. It is not something that others can add to or be a part of.

Active uses of Tec
Some example of active uses of technology in communities, and education are through social media sites. Communities are able to stay connected through facebook, district and community websites, and wiki . As well as direct connections with the use of cellphones where students are staying connected to parents while in school at all times.
On community and school pages you can find news about school life (activities/sports/academics/whats happening) photos of artwork, athletes, staff, and community. Now a days you can get a lot of information from social media sites (good and bad). It can help not only those who live in the community but also people who are looking to join certain communities.
In the art room students are able to take their outside interests and bring them into the classroom to aid them in creating works of art. We discuss a lot of topics about culture, politics, education, youth, pop culture, street slang, music, genres, and basically whats hot and whats not. Through topics of their choice they are able to create a meaningful work of art that not only speaks to them and about them, but for them. We have guided critiques where students openly discuss what their message/ meaning/ idea was and how they wanted to represent that idea in a physical form. We talk about what works and what didn't and why. We also discuss how as artists we are putting ourselves out for criticism, just like we do on social media. Criticism can be challenging not only because of our messages run deep and personal, but also because everyone is not going to see and agree with the work of art or the message. Someone one is always going to disagree, agree, or think they can do it better, and that it is not pointless because they said their peace.
I feel like this is type of atmosphere can help prepare students for the future by balancing the online world with the real world. It has to be a balancing act. Students need to know how to function in both worlds in order to survive.

Find 5 this week from others who inspire me. Found these ideas on a bunch of my art teacher blogs.
1) Giant paint brush and pallet. This teacher made these props for her art show. I feel like this is a great project idea for my Spirit Art class to do for our up coming art show. we can use the props to help lead parents, teachers, and kids in the direction to locate the art show instead of signs, and posters. Last year we did card board cut outs of Disney Characters pointing the way.
2)  Art Olympics! What a great idea for next year when the Olympics come back around. They have both indoor and outdoor events.
https://clarketasticart.blogspot.com/2018/03/the-art-olympics-1-indoor-events.html?m=1
3) Graffiti Tape Art,
Love this idea because it is not a permanent display on the wall and more then one student can participate. Students love street art, and making things in the hall ways.
4) Hand drawings, I did these this year using sign language and they turned out amazing. This is a nice way to switch up the project, plus I like the idea of hands at work. It lets them show their own creativity and interests.
5) Puff paint stained glass. I come across lots of different variations of stained glass projects and these look awesome. My 7th and 8th graders would love to use puff paint. I seen other ways where they add paint to glue and use the squeeze glue to outline the edges and then acrylics to finish. Just another spin on a great project.

5 Finds
1) I think one of my wobbles is still in figuring out how to transition from elementary to high school art. I taught 1 year as an elementary teacher and at the end of last year I felt like I was into a great groove, students were having fun, I figured out what lessons worked and what did not, and I had gained the respect and trust of the elementary kids. Then they pulled me to middle and high school. Dont get me wrong, I love it! Its what I am used to. It was so hard to transition from teaching older kids, to younger, then back to older. I just feel like I forgot a little. It is such a HUGE difference. I know once I get through this first year I will be back into the ms/hs groove again.

Wobble
I am have been teaching full time for 2 years now, and I feel like everyday I am failing on some sort of level. I know that their is a lot for me to still learn, everyday I am discovering something new. Either about myself, my kids, teaching, classroom, projects and more. Every teacher experiences this and most say that the learning never stops.
Some areas where I find myself wobbling with are....
How can I use spoken word or hip hop in my classroom to help engage students in art history?
How can I get more resources for students?
How can I make being “thrown” into art fun and not have kids bummed about their skill level?
How can I build up confidence in my students through art?
How can I make the most f my day and not stress?
How can I get my lunch back?
Their are so many questions that I find change everyday. Some answers I will discover on my own and through time. But I know I will always be questioning myself about how I can do better and more.

1) I like to hangout the most on Facebook. I found that they have a lot a teacher groups that give me connections in my field, as well as project ideas, support, and help. My first day teaching High School Art I did not know how to use the old kiln that was in the classroom. On FB i posted pictures and asked for help and teachers were able to point me in the right direction so I could safely get the kiln up and running safely.
2) Instagram, it is interesting to see what the kids are looking at everyday and to find ideas for projects.
3) Art Sonia is a great art teacher source for projects, lesson plans, and for connection to other schools around the world. It is also a great source to post student work where parents can purchase coffee mugs with their childs art work on it. Plus it raises money for the art program with every purchase. Their are also are contests with student work.
4) Snapchat. I dont use it I just like to see the different filters for pictures. I always find my students looking to the filters when making self portraits.
5) Philadelphia Museum of Art/ and Googles Arts and Culture app, they proved teacher tools and resources such as 3D images of artwork, close ups, artist highlights and more.

Play is important to us as a society. This week we learned how important it was from Katie Salen, and Mitch Resnick. In their videos they stressed on how important it is in our development that we continue to have play time in our daily lives. Through the process of play we reach a different mindset, which opens doors to learning through communication, pushing limits, exploring, and experimenting. Play time is like practice time, where we get the opportunity to get better at something, and build confidence. “BUT not all play is treated equally, we must support creative thinking play which is, using familiar materials in an unfamiliar way”, according to, Mitch Resnick.
Fortunately, for me as an art educator I get to play everyday in my classroom and at home making demos for projects. The art room is a perfect place for creative thinking play. Everyday we use familiar materials in a new and exciting way. In my classroom we are all experimenters.  I encourage kids to play and try new things out. I want them to work through their own concepts and learn at their own pace. They are aloud the time to “tinker” if needed. Sometimes it is important to have a plan (sketch) and even with that sketch and plan things are going to change with that plan because art is subject to change. It is a process where their are no right or wrong answers.
This week our ( me and my advanced art class) play was this project. We listened to music to invoke a feeling and then made art off of that experience/feeling. The song I listened to while making MY BOO PAINTING  was be the B52s called “Dance this Mess Around.” I picked it because it makes me happy because of the beat, lyrics, and the fact that I am an 80s baby it was a throw back for me. I painted the two backgrounds while listening to the song and dancing. Then ripped them up and collaged them into one unified background. My painting is of my first dog Boo, she also makes me feel happy and the color reminded me of her so she was my subject.
I have never done this before, it was a new idea that come to me while observing my art class. I realized how important music is to us as a culture, and even more so for our youth. I wanted them to understand that art isn't always about a pretty, perfect picture, and that art is also about a feeling and a sense of play. My kids loved it, they have never been so excited, motivated, and engaged. They didn't even realized I snapped the last image of them working.
Play has lead me to wonder why everything in life isn't taught through play? That experience, freedom, and attitude leaves a mark on you. I am excited to hear what the kids thoughts are for our critique.

..1) https://educationcloset.com/2016/11/30/equity-arts-education-really-look-like/
This article poses some great questions about Equity in the arts and schools. It is a disadvantage to students that some schools have more access to the arts then others based on location, finances, and faculty. For awhile the arts were cut from schools and now were seeing less an less of those cuts. The arts is extremely important for students to have and experience.
2) http://www.pbs.org/parents/education/music-arts/the-importance-of-art-in-child-development/
The arts do more for our kids then what PBS has listed in their article. It units communities, shares culture, and gives kids powerful tools to communicate with.
3)  https://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2014/12/03/13greene.h34.html
In this article Education Week writers Jay P. Greene, Brian Kisida, Cari A. Bogulski, Anne Kraybill, Collin Hitt, & Daniel H. Bowen mention other factors that the arts brings to youth, “We want them to be tolerant and empathetic human beings. And we want them to be astute observers of their surroundings. Some of these qualities may help students earn a living, but their importance has more to do with students' development into cultured and humane people.”
4) https://www.arts.gov/news/2012/new-nea-research-report-shows-potential-benefits-arts-education-risk-youth
This lists statics about how the arts help students in and out of school based off of research.
5) https://www.planning.org/research/arts/briefingpapers/engagement.htm
Through music, murals, parades, storytelling, and social networking we can share stories about cultures, values, healing, and community life uniting and lifting communities around us. This out reach engagement involves everyone and thinks about everyone in the community, no one is left out. Philadelphia has two programs that I know of for community engagement.
1) Murals Arts program- https://www.muralarts.org/
2) Spiral Q Theater- http://www.spiralq.org/

These are amazing programs for adults and children.
