BIGGEST CHALLENGE AND BEST OPPORTUNITY OFFERED BY NEW MEDIA
Tumblr media
Before we start of with the topic, we should define what new media is.
The term new media as used here encompasses the digital content typically accessible through the Internet that usually includes aspects of user feedback and creative participation. Although what is considered ‘new’ today is ever-changing, broadly, these interventions include technology-based approaches that use social networking sites (e.g., Facebook, Twitter), mobile dating/hook-up apps that employ global positioning system technology to connect users based on their location (e.g., Grindr, Jack'd) and researcher-developed applications (apps) that enable dialogue between users.

As a student, what do you consider is the biggest challenge and, on the other hand, the best opportunity offered to you by the new media?
Now to answer the question, the biggest challenge for us as students is unarguably DISTRACTION. New media indeed offers lots of educational purpose but social medias and other platforms of entertainment are inevitable. Thus, the word unproductive occurs because of such situations. We tend to get easily distracted from the productive part then onto the unproductive part of new media. As a result, we oftenly cram instead of getting our things done first which is not a good thing but luckily this is definitely where the word discipline comes in. We just need to discipline ourselves to finish our work first before we dwell into our own interests.
On the other hand, we unanimously thought of ACCESSIBILITY as the best opportunity. Why? because whenever we need to do something either for educational or for personal use, we can easily access it as long new media is with us. We can easily obtain photos, videos, and most importantly information with the help of new media. As students in this time and age, this situation requires us to show more of our digital skills such as editing. Editing infographics (brochures pamphlets, and etc.) , videos (such as TV or radio broadcasting), music (needed for our performances), and a whole lot more of creative stuffs. With new media, such needs are easily accessible and obtainable. Accessibility is indeed without a doubt an opportunity for us students to make our works easier to handle. Yet despite all of the good things, let us always be wary of fake informations so let us learn how to dissect between what is right and wrong. Investigate first before we arrive to our judgements.

The Value of Being a Media and Information Literate Individual
"That was when they knew they messed up" is a statement which spells a situation where you believe what you saw without investigating about it. Fake news spread almost every day and we have the choice to believe or not to believe. That's where Media Literacy comes in.
Before we start of with the topic, you all may be wondering what "media literacy" means.
To put it simple, Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media. Media It is also an ability that enables us to evaluate and investigate whatever the contents are on different social media portals accordingly. Being a media literate helps us in making informed judgements about certain things that we see online.
Is being a Media and Information Literate Important?
- For us, it is very important because being a media and information literate does not only benefit the users but benefits the society as a whole. We'll have less fake news because we will be able to disseminate whatever information is given out. It molds us to become skillful users which sends out and receives information.
“Media literacy is not just important, it’s absolutely critical. It’s going to make the difference between whether kids are a tool of the mass media or whether the mass media is a tool for kids to use.”
― Linda Ellerbee
...
So as to continue the main topic, what is the value of being a media and information literate individual?
- Being a media and information literate individual has an enormous value to all of us. One becomes a resource and a translator of current info into media and will possess a keen understanding of the information in the media and would be able to work with others by sharing or using precise informations. One can also have the feeling of reassurance when you hve this ability since you already know how to act ethically online and how to disseminate information whether its a true or a fake one. Literacy on any level is clear and valuable.
