i know this is a soap and all that but i do believe that this breakdown that lisa is having could require a career change if this was real life. the woman’s whole identity and sense of worth is rooted in her job but i think there’s something in her history and personality that up until now has made her so good (allegedly) at it. her willingness to run toward danger, like she said in today’s episode, is not something we’re born with, it literally goes against our primary instinct which is survival. has lisa felt like she has nothing to lose? is her enduring pain and running towards it the only way she thinks she can deserve love? does she have a savior complex?

idk but i really think her relationship with carla has been the catalyst for this specific big change, much more than becky dying.

becky dying just reinforced the idea that she needs to be strong and shove down every emotion because now it’s not the time and that her job is really the only thing she’s good at and that now she really has nothing to lose (betsy has never been on the forefront of her mind, let’s be honest lol). plus, i suspect that a lot of her relationship with becky was intertwined with work and that both of them being cops was an important part of their dynamics.

but carla owns a knicker factory. could not care less about lisa being a cop, if not for the fact that she knows it’s essential to lisa’s personality. if tomorrow lisa told her she genuinely wanted to pull pints for a living, carla would be perfectly fine with that (relieved, probably). lisa’s job plays no part in carla loving her and lisa knows that.

and i don’t think it’s a coincidence that lisa is having this breakdown now, when she finally feels like she’s going to be held and supported and so!loved even if she falls apart. even if she becomes unable at doing the one thing she has always done well (allegedly). even if she shows the woman she loves that she’s messy imperfect actually does not have her shit together passively suicidal maybe?

and so i wonder, would there be really much of a point to her career choice now? after therapy and after being loved so wholly for who she is, will the elements that made her want to be a police officer in the first place still be there? or does healing leave space for discovering new goals, new needs, new sides of yourself?

i understand that they’re trying to show that mental health issues are not something you can just switch on and off as you please and they affect you deeply even when the circumstances are objectively happy, but i hate how they’re wasting this house move storyline. lisa’s head is clearly somewhere else (i don’t blame her) and has been since they’ve started looking at houses. we could’ve seen lisa deal with her issues and then have them go house hunting, what’s the rush honestly

i think the western world has made us so caught up on having a purpose and finding it for our whole entire lives. some indigenous cultures believe we’re alive and here just as trees and animals are: to be here and to beautiful and strange, to simply just be. we don’t need to achieve anything to be valid in our humanness.
