Week 6 Final Assignment [6/12/23]: Curated Portfolio
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Each of these pieces has reflected the requirements and instructions of the assignments they were tied to in varying degrees of success. Although, the ones that failed the most to effectively carry out such instructions were most definitely the first two images in this set, primarily due to not being used to using the kinds of materials required. From the first image in the above set to the last, I feel as though it was an upward slope of improvement not necessarily only compositionally, but also fundamentally. As I continued to work, I felt my understanding of how aspects of art may come together to create balanced pieces as well as evoke certain emotions from them with color alone. On top of that, I also felt myself struggling less with things I once thought extremely difficult such as keeping a steady line with a brush or cutting out shapes perfectly. Finally, all the pieces from this set when looked at one after another show a progression of when I began to get a footing on everything and found my own consistency. For example, in a majority of the later art pieces, I began to use a lot of sharp and triangular shapes or at the very least included them somewhere.

Week 5 Extra Credit [6/7/23]: Faculty Alumni Exhibition
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While I arrived a few minutes late for the opening at 2 PM, the exhibition was still full of beautiful pieces of work that captured various kinds of art from paintings to photography. It was also extremely interesting getting to read some of the artists' statements tied to some of the art pieces. One that caught my eye was of the sculpture attached to this post, titled "Wind Trails" made by Valeria Yamamoto. The statement itself focuses on her journey as an artist as well as how she takes much of her inspiration from the simplicity of the natural world. What had started that particular sculpture however was how she saw a sudden burst of wind create swirls out of dried-out leaves.

Week 4 Midterm [6/4/23]
Tumblr media
Before anything else, I started with deciding what colors to use for this project. Initially, I wanted to use a more analogous color palette using shades of blue, purple, blue-green, and green. However, the more I tested different color schemes, the more I leaned toward a more chaotic color palette where one-half of the colors were cooler and the other half were warmer. I did this primarily because most of my other assignments had "calmer" color palettes in a sense, so I wanted to attempt something I hadn't done much of previously. After that, most of the work was planning designs that would work well with each other and feel connected in some form. For that, I decided on including at minimum one diamond shape within each composition and have each composition positioned in a way that makes it appear as if some of the colors are flowing from one place to another. Overall, while I feel I could have done a better job in some aspects, I'm happy with the end results. My understanding of the Principals of art definitely played a huge role in allowing me to get to this end result as I found myself paying attention to things such as how the colors balanced each other within each square, what shapes would repeat, where each composition would benefit from an area of emphasis, and especially how they would all come together in the end.

Week 2 Assignment [5/18/23]: White Shapes on Black Background
Tumblr media
For this assignment, I immediately started coming up with concepts upon filling the 8x10 canvas with black acrylic. From the beginning, I wanted to somehow incorporate angular shapes as the primary focus of the piece while making it difficult to tell whether or not the black or white parts are what were cut. Immediately as I sketched out ideas, the position of the bottom triangle came to me almost immediately and things went smoothly from there. The main issue came when I cut these shapes out and made a mistake by cutting the bottom shape far shorter than planned. So I improvised and it went from touching the edges entirely to leaving a small black gap. Admittedly, I'm happy it happened because it ended up creating a far better balance than it initially had.

Week Two Assignment [5/17/23]: Black Shapes on White Background
Tumblr media
Due to being limited to five shapes, I was stumped on where to even begin. I felt as though going with the flow with that limitation would not have been a very good idea, however planning it out in its entirety also felt like the wrong way to go. So, I did a mix of both. I cut out the bottom right shape without thinking about anything else besides where it would be placed and then took a picture of the page with that shape in place. From there I started sketching over the photo to come up with compositions revolving specifically around that shape. While sketching, I also attempted to pay mind to not only the shapes made by the positive space but simultaneously the negative space as well. That's primarily why the negative and positive spaces in this piece seem to mirror each other in almost every aspect.

Week Two Assignment (5/16/23): Order
Tumblr media
For this piece, I immediately went to cutting without planning much at all. Though, it did take me two attempts to get something that felt at least viable to start with. From there, I began trying to position the pieces I had already cut by then to create a square-like shape that had enough gaps in it to have it look like everything is both flowing in and out of it simultaneously. While yes, the shape may be constructing itself again, I wanted there to simultaneously be a feeling of the opposite where the shape may also be tearing itself apart.

Week Two Assignment [5/15/23]: Chaos
Tumblr media
At first, I struggled a lot with this assignment as I am very accustomed to planning/making concepts before even thinking of starting anything. Yet due to that approach not working very well no matter how hard I tried, I decided to go with the flow which worked wonders. For certain, however, from the beginning I wanted this art piece to be flowy and give the illusion that the scattered bits are getting farther and farther away.
