i kinda knew he was going to be one of his top two as soon as i saw the different options. like come on, this is so accurate. although... i’m a bit on the fence about the whole visionary. he’s not a pioneer and he’s probably the least courageous person in the world. bold? meh. i might be taking the test’s descriptions very literally, so that could explain it, but he does fit caregiver and intellectual better.

“don’t get me started on that topic.” clémentine warned him. anything that involved politics made her blood run cold. “if i’m being guillotined for treason, might as well do it in a dress covered with candies and sweets! i wanna go down in history with style!” she added gestures to her dramatic statement. “i’m very proud of that. our ten year-old selves would have gotten along very well!” she replied with excitement, which vanished fairly quickly. the way he said that, she could distinguish the pain in his eyes, the disappointment. “wait? hold on! no, i did not come with him. i’m not the smartest cookie, but i’m not dumb enough to think he would have invited me.” it took her by surprise that gabriel automatically associated the two elements together.  “i’m here with my best friend, actually. but that doesn’t mean we can’t spend time together! everyone deserves a break from me at some point.” minnie laughed softly and came up with a suggestion. “and i need a break from how stuffy this place is feeling. we could go outside and talk, if you want to.”

“why? i like that topic.” the truth was he did not, usually. ever since his father came up with this fantasy life of becoming some sterotypical politician, that was all he ehard about during family gatherings. it changed from questions about him moving on after all the years since the incident. yet, it bore him. nothing about clémentine bored him, and he was eager to learn more about her opinions. she really did seem to live in her own bubble, so it piqued his interest to discover her views of the world. “i think so too, they would have been besties, in some alternate universe.” the thought amused him. he let out a sigh of relief. when she mentioned him the other time, when they were at the restaurant together, it haunted him to think he had gotten himelf into some complicated triangle. “ah, your best friend.” best friends were okay, they were not threatening, or less than almost husbands. “that’s a great idea.” he offered his arm for her to grab it. when she did so, he started walking towards the doors of the hotel. he was automatically refreshed by the cold air of the evening. “i’ve been meaning to ask you this for a long time...” gabriel took a deep breath. and stopped walking to look at clémentine. “here, take this.” he removed his jacket and put it on her shoulders to cover most of her exposed skin. her dress was beautiful, but it was not suited for their current location. “so, yeah... would you ever consider going on a date with me?”

“Only because I work in customer service.” she shrugged, wondering for a moment if he was allergic to jewelry before continuing, “but not very many ‘fancy dancing evenings’, no.” Erin took a moment to watch the crowd, smiling at a group who seemed to be having a blast. “What kind of seminars?”

“oh, that surely helps. i’ve got a lot of admiration for jobs like that.” gabriel added. “work related. new researches on eye diseases and cures and new methods. it’s probably as boring as you might think it is. no one is dancing and being happy, we’re all sitting there and wondering why we even came to the presentation in the first place.”

“While I do grow cannabis, I did not smoke any before coming here.” She said before taking Rocky out of the purse, rubbing his little head. “Oh, why? Because these two are very demanding and insist on attention, and were practically begging me to bring them. They kept staring at me while I was getting ready, so…I couldn’t say no.”

“fair enough.” he agreed as he stared at them, truly mesmerized. “i always thought lizards were loners, y’know? that they did not really care about your presence, but clearly, they’re really fond of you. it’s cute to watch.”

“Is there anything good over there? I’ve been looking for someone, but I don’t think she’d mind if I take a detour to the buffet table,” Niji confirmed. For a second she hesitating in taking his arm, but she let out a slow exhale and wrapped a hand around it.

“yeah, there’s some good stuff.” he reassured her and looked down at her as they started walking towards the tables and plates. “i won’t hold you back for too long, i promise. so this person won’t be searching for you.”

“Are you real? Are you really this wholesome, handsome, and adorably pop-culture clueless in twenty twenty? Because I might be in love with you if you are. But I might be much worse than drunk if you aren’t.” Utterly unbelievable, Nic thought. “Jumping on the spot takes strength, yeah. I’m more of a salsa person, but I manage.”

“i’m very much so real.” he confirmed, hiding his shyness that came from all the compliments bu chuckling. “thanks for all of that, although you are still pretty damn drunk. he added. “salsa? i think i took one sansa dance class in my whole life.” whenever his parents would force him on some of their family trips to cuba, to the bahamas and all the other islands around. he would try everything to escape staying around them, and that included dance classes. ” “i might be rusty, but i’m up for the challenge.”

“Huh? No?” She crinkled her nose, opening her bag and taking one of her lizards out, since she figured no one in charge was watching. She stroked Aurora’s head before showing the bearded dragon off. She could understand why he thought she was crazy, though. “Do not tell anyone I have these two with me. I don’t think pets are allowed…”

“i won’t tell a soul.” gabriel promised, shaking his head in disbelief. “i... i sort of thought you took some funny substance. this is truly the highlight of my evening.” he laughed softly and looked at the lizards. the one she was petting clearly looked friendlier than all the similar creatures that he encountered back in california. “tiny dragons.” he repeated. “may i ask why you brought them with you? i mean, a purse is not their natural habitat. neither is a ball crowded with drunk people.”

“We need to find some treats, if you ask me. I’m starved completely and withering away,” Niji noted dramatically. Though, finding who she came with was a top priority, but she couldn’t do that on an empty stomach. “Oh, it’s fine. Food is one of my primary hobbies as well. There’s no judgement.”

“thank you for not judging, i appreciate it.” he gave her one firm nod and stretched his arm out for her to grab it. “i’ve made way too many trips to the buffet already, i’ll show you the way.”

“That’s very kind of you as well. The chain was a bold choice.” she smiled, “I take it this isn’t usually your scene?”

“i wen’t back and forth about it, and i think i regret my choice. jewelry is itchy.” he commented and shook his head lightly. “is it that obvious? it’s really not. i attend seminars and things like not, not fancy dancing evenings. is it wrong to assume you look much more in your element?”

“Tiramisu guy!” Niji laughed out loud, offering him a smile. She didn’t remember getting his name, and if she did, it was long out of her mind. “I’m doing fine. Loading up on cake and drinks, again?”

he chuckled as well. “tiramisu guy. my life has led o be called tiramisu guy. now i can say i made it.” he lifted his empty hands. “not right now... but if you had asked me two minutes ago, i would have been guilty as charged. i promise, that’s not the only things i do all day long, i have other hobbies.”

“Huh?” She looked up from her purse, grabbing a strawberry off the table and sticking it into her purse for the lizards to nibble on. “No, I’m good. Just smuggled a couple of guests in with me and despite me warning them to be as subtle as possible, they’re failing. Miserably.”

he had to blink twice, since he could not believe what just happened. out of every expensive food and object, this person was stealing berries. he had so many questions, even more when she admitted she brought guests with her. “i’m not that kind of doctor and excuse me if this comes off as wrong, but are you okay? are you taking something that makes you hallucinate people... in your hand bag? again, i’m sorry, but this is a bit bizarre.”

“boo, you whooooore! How’s my Regina George voice? Bet you weren’t expecting that, huh?” Nic said, happy and maybe a bit hyper, carefully avoiding the other’s advice. “You sure you don’t want to dance? Doesn’t have to be a fight.”

“regina who? who goes around town calling other people whores? that’s mean.” he squinted. “wasn’t expecting that at all, you got me there. and yeah, i can cheer from the side. i’m better at that than doing breakdance or pirouettes. i’m more of a jump on the spot until my knees hurt and i need my painkillers kind of dancer.”

“thank you! that is very sweet of you! you’re going to be on the special guests! you don’t want to miss the inauguration ball of my happy kingdom of desserts! i could see you as a knight, with candy cane as the sword. that would be epic!” she laughed at the concept, it lacked originality, but that would be the only sort of monarchy she would ever support. “you see right through me, doctor. i had to get this dress as soon as i saw it. it was calling my name, believe it or not!” she explained and smiled at him. “thank you. that’s so sweet of you.” she made her glass spin a little as she pressed her lips together. “i’m sorry about that… you know, with work and all. i’m a terrible texter, i either fall asleep or start baking and staring at my cake while it bakes in the oven.” this had to be the worst excuse in the world. “i was afraid to tell you i came with someone else.” she destroyed her own web of lies. “i didn’t want to make you sad. i’m really sorry, gabriel.”

“isn’t canada part of a kingdom already? would that not be treason, to like actual queen and your free healthcare?” having to teach clémentine a lesson about american’s health system was not what he expected when this strange emergency case burst into his office several weeks ago. the conversation ended up being fun, he loved learning new things, but it was inappropriate for a fifteen minutes appointment. “you’re making my ten year-old self very happy. all i’ve ever wanted was to be a knight, fighting sugar with more sugar.” he could not comprehend how her brain functioned, but he was starting to really, and genuinely like it. “i do believe it.” he could feel the air around them getting tensed. gabriel hated confrontation, feeling immediately bad about even bringing the topic up. clearly he was not the only one with guilt. he appreciated her coming clear about the situation, and the lies she poorly explained. “thanks for your honesty. you could have told me right away, no big deal. i can take it.” he shrugged it off, and looked down for a few moments. “i’m not really sad. i was just hoping to spend more time with you.” he sighed. “i’ll let you be. your ex fiancé is probably looking for you.”
