NFL games will start streaming on all mobile carriers in January — not just Verizon
Verizon has long held exclusive rights to mobile streaming of live NFL games, offering the content as a lure to its own subscribers. Today, the telecoms company announced a new deal with the sports league which will see games streamed to mobile devices regardless of carrier.
From the 2018 playoffs in January onwards, customers with any mobile carrier will be able to access NFL games through the official NFL Mobile app, Yahoo Sports app, and go90, Verizon’s on-demand streaming service. (Watching on a PC or anything larger than a phone has already been possible, as those devices weren’t subject to Verizon’s exclusivity.)

YouTube for Xbox One updated with 4K support
Microsoft’s Xbox One consoles are finally getting 4K YouTube support this week. It’s been a long time coming for the Xbox One S, which launched with 4K Blu-ray support but no 4K YouTube back in August 2016. Google has been slow to add 4K support for the Xbox One, but it’s arriving with a new app update for both the Xbox One X and Xbox One S.
The new YouTube app includes support for 4K resolution videos and 60 fps, ideal for watching gaming footage or sports events. Unfortunately, there’s no support for HDR YouTube content with this particular app. The updated app is rolling out now, or if you don’t want to wait you install it early from the Windows Store.

An unofficial version of the MyEtherWallet app is #3 on Apple’s App Store
An unofficial app for the popular MyEtherWallet.com service is being sold for $4.99 in Apple’s iOS App Store, as spotted by TechCrunch. The week-old MyEtherWallet digital wallet app, which is misleadingly named at best, or a scam at worst, rose to the third most popular ranking in the paid finance category over the weekend, where it still resides at the time of publication. The app’s developer is listed as Nam Le, who has no relation to the service and no history with bitcoin (Le’s other apps include a panda warrior game and a fishing game). MyEtherWallet.com is one of the most popular services for storing cryptocurrencies, but it doesn’t have an official app in Apple’s App Store.

Former Facebook exec says social media is ripping apart society
Another former Facebook executive has spoken out about the harm the social network is doing to civil society around the world. Chamath Palihapitiya, who joined Facebook in 2007 and became its vice president for user growth, said he feels “tremendous guilt” about the company he helped make. “I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works,” he told an audience at Stanford Graduate School of Business, before recommending people take a “hard break” from social media.

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is showrunner for Netflix’s The Witcher
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will adapt The Witcher novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski for Netflix, reports Variety. Hissrich, known for writing and producing Marvel's The Defenders and Daredevil on the streaming service, will act as showrunner and executive producer for the series. Netflix announced it would be producing the fantasy TV show back in May.
The Witcher series is comprised of short stories and eight novels about monster hunters known as witchers and centers around the character Geralt of Rivia. The hunters undergo body modification and training to battle monsters using supernatural powers.

Watch Rocket Lab try a second time to fly its rocket to orbit
Tonight, US spaceflight startup Rocket Lab is set to launch its experimental Electron rocket for the second time — a test flight that will validate if the vehicle is ready for sending small commercial payloads to orbit. The rocket is slated to take off from the company’s launch facility in New Zealand, and unlike the Electron’s first test flight, we’ll get to see this one go up live.
Rocket Lab has cautioned that since this is a test flight, the company won’t fly unless conditions are more than ideal for launch and only if the rocket is truly ready. Connected safe maker Vaultek issues security update after researchers discover Bluetooth vulnerability
Vaultek is a company that manufactures Bluetooth-connected safes for valuables and firearms — things that you really want to make sure are secured. When we came across one of their products on Indiegogo last year, we noted that crowdsourced Internet of Things devices have a troubling history of being insecure. Recently, security firm Two Six Labs picked up one of Vaultek’s connected safes, and demonstrated that it can easily be cracked open.

The OnePlus 5T is unable to stream content from Netflix, Amazon Prime, Google Play Movies, and other video services in high-definition, despite its HD-capable display and powerful hardware. The deficiency was noted in a thread on the OnePlus forums and points to lack of support for Widevine Level 1 DRM, which many services require for HD streaming. The 5T currently supports Widevine Level 3, which only covers standard definition streams. The Verge has confirmed that both the OnePlus 5T and its predecessor, the OnePlus 5, are currently unable to stream Netflix or Amazon Prime Video higher than SD resolution.

Ernie Cline’s 2011 debut novel Ready Player One is being made into a blockbuster movie thanks to Steven Spielberg, but it looks like Cline might be bringing readers back to the OASIS for another adventure. During a Facebook Live event in which Cline debuted the film’s second trailer, he confirmed that he was working on a sequel to the book.
Set in a massive virtual reality world called OASIS, Ready Player One follows Wade Watts, a teenager who spends his time searching for three hidden Easter eggs left behind by the system’s founder. Aided by fellow hunters such as Art3mis, they have to race against a massive corporation that wants control of OASIS.
