iPhone 7 Review
Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 7 was launched in September 2016 and was soon met with record-breaking sales, but does that mean the world’s most popular smartphone lives up to the hype? With some major and minor improvements and features, including water resistance and up to 256GB storage capacity, Apple’s flagship device has users wondering how it stacks up to not only other smartphones on the market but also its predecessor, the iPhone 6s. With the removal of the headphone jack and a higher price tag, the iPhone 7 seemingly has both Apple fans and tech experts alike divided.
iPhone 7 Specs
32GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities
138.3mm x 67.1mm
138 grams (4.87 ounces)
4.7 inch Retina HD display
A10 fusion chip
12MP camera
4K video recording
Up to 2 hours longer battery life than iPhone 6s
iOs 10
Design
Much like the iPhone 6 and 6s before it, the iPhone 7 features an aluminium body that provides a comfortable grip and weight. Unlike the iPhone 5c or even the 3G, Apple’s second generation of the iPhone, that feature plastic backings, the weight of the metal gives the phone a feeling of quality and luxury, though slightly lighter than the iPhone 6.
One of the first differences users will notice from previous versions of the iPhone, however, are the finishes. Apple has dropped Space Grey, which debuted on the iPhone 5, in favour of a black matte finish. They’ve also added Jet Black, which is a glossy black finish that has become extremely popular with users, causing this version of the iPhone to sell out almost immediately. Of course, Silver, Gold and Rose Gold are also still available on the iPhone 7 and all current models.
The absence of the antenna bands is also a welcome change to the iPhone 7 and gives the phone a cleaner and more minimalistic look, similar to iPhones released in years past.
Though the aesthetic remains roughly the same, there are some key differences in the hardware. Gone is the 3.5mm headphone jack featured on all other iPhone models before it. In its place, Apple has redesigned their headphones to include a lightning connector that plugs into the same single lightning port that the charger does.
Major Changes
Gone is the 3.5mm headphone jack featured on all other iPhone models before it. In its place, Apple has redesigned their headphones to include a lightning connector.
The home button also got a redesign in the iPhone 7. Instead of a traditional button that clicks when pressed down, the touch sensitivity gives the users of the new iPhone a completely different tactile sensation.
One of the biggest changes to the iPhone 7, though least noticeable up front, is the inclusion of water and dust-resistance. For Apple fans, this feature is a long time coming, as it’s been featured in a number of other high-profile phones in the recent past. Its addition means reduced likelihood of damage caused by dropping your phone in the water or from dust getting into the ports and the body.
Display
The iPhone 7 receives a brand new beautiful display, and while it looks amazing, it’s no sharper than the one that appears on the iPhone 6s. The 4.7 inch, 326ppi, 1334 x 750 Retina display is crystal clear and the wide-color-gamut, the same that is featured in the iPad Pro and iMac, means it’s bright, rich and wonderfully colourful. Watching videos and movies is as good as its ever been on an iPhone, especially when combined with other new features, such as the dual speakers.
Audio
If audio is an important component to your mobile experience, the iPhone 7 delivers. Unlike models before it, the iPhone 7 now features two speakers on the bottom of the phone, one on either side of the lightning port. On previous versions, this was not possible due to the 3.5mm jack, though Apple has found a workaround. Not only are there two speakers on the phone, but they’re extra loud. In fact, the top volume on the iPhone 7 is double that of the iPhone 6. If you’re someone who regularly plays music from your iPhone, this means it’ll be loud and clear and can easily fill in if you don’t have access to a Bluetooth speaker.
This upgrade to the speakers doesn’t come without controversy, however. Apple’s decision to drop the 3.5mm headphone jack from the iPhone 7 has caused a stir in the Apple community and one that won’t be settled anytime soon. The 3.5mm jack has been an industry standard for decades and every other smartphone on the market features it, so it came as somewhat of a surprise to learn that Apple was dropping the jack in favour of its own lightning port connection. Though it’s a novel idea, in theory, this means that users cannot use their standard headphones in the new iPhone without the use of an adapter dongle. It also means that users cannot use their lightning headphones at the same time the phone is charging because there is only one port.
The decision to not include the 3.5mm jack is just another step Apple is taking to make the future wireless, but it comes at a cost. Alongside the launch of the iPhone 7 was Apple’s own AirPods—wireless headphones that connect via bluetooth—though they come with a hefty price tag. It’s also worth noting that Apple’s new MacBook Pros do not include this new headphone technology and instead rely on the same old 3.5mm jack. This means, in order to use your iPhone 7 headphones in the new MacBook Pro, you’ll need another adapter. For many, this is seen as one step forward and two steps back.
Performance
Like other iPhones before it, the iPhone 7 comes with an all-new A10 fusion chip that makes this iPhone the most powerful yet. Though it retains the same 2GB of RAM as its predecessor, switching between apps and opening new ones is as quick as smooth as ever. 3D gaming and multitasking also works like a charm and overtakes the iPhone 6s in both categories, with graphics that shine.
In fact, the new iPhone is 30% faster than the 6s and 12% more powerful than Samsung’s Galaxy S7. For users of much older generations of the iPhone, this is a huge boost in processing power. If you’re upgrading from the 6s, however, it may not be a largely noticeable difference, as both are extremely powerful.
Operating System
The iPhone 7 also comes pre-installed with iOS 10, Apple’s latest iPhone operating system. While the look of the new OS remains mostly the same, there are a few tweaks here and there that will make the user experience all around more enjoyable.
iMessage now features larger emojis and sticker and even offers the ability to send doodles. The new touch home button also means that you can send a reading of your pulse that will appear as a graphic to other contacts. Apple Music also receives a much-needed refresh that streamlines the layout to make it more user-friendly.
Much of which makes iOS 10 great is its simplification. One of the biggest draws users will first experience on the new operating system is the ability to delete stock Apple apps, like Stocks, Podcasts, Find My Friends, etc. For many iPhone users, these apps were relegated to an extra folder and not touched, only taking up precious storage.
Camera
The new camera built into the iPhone 7 is also a big improvement over the iPhone 6s. This 12MP camera with OIS works a lot better in low light and delivers results in nearly every condition. It’s wider aperture allows for more light into the sensor, leading to clearer photos with a reduction in the depth of field. The front-facing, 7MP camera also received a boost so selfies and FaceTime video chatting are improved too. Though it’s an upgrade from previous iPhones, the new camera doesn’t perform leaps and bounds better than that of the Samsung Galaxy S7, but definitely, stands out in low or mixed light settings.
Battery
Like with most other aspects of the iPhone 7, the battery itself receives a nice boost when compared to the iPhone 6s. The 7 battery can now last up to two hours longer than its predecessor. That increases life when using the internet and wireless video playback, which jumps from 11 hours to 13 hours, while talk time and standby remain the same.
Real World Water Proof Test
So after a trip to Gran Canaria in Spain, I put the iPhone 7 through its paces. Both in terms of the claim from Apple that it is dust resistant and also water resistant. Although Apple do state that the iPhone can lose its water resistance over time, therefore the warranty does not cover water damage.
Kean to test how water proof was I jumped in the pool and took some under water footage.
Note Apple doesn’t support this under their Apple Care Scheme, so if your phone was to get damaged you are on your own. I tried it anyway and a few minutes after getting out of the water, the phone was asking me to insert a new SIM Card.
Panic struck in as I had just destroyed my new iPhone. I removed the SIM, dried it out with a hair dryer and put it back in again.
Thankfully the phone started to work again but it’s safe to say, I won’t be taking such massive risks in future.
Conclusion
The iPhone 7 is a dazzling piece of tech that not only performs well but looks like a work of art in and of itself. Though it includes a number of key upgrades and improvements, for users of the iPhone 6 or 6s, it may not be enough to justify a purchase, especially considering its price. For users of older models, however, the iPhone 7 will perform circles around older generations as nothing in anything before the iPhone 6 can match the A10 chip.
The decision to not include the 3.5mm headphone jack may be a turnoff for some, but as time goes on, it may prove to be less of an issue than expected. As iPhone 7’s continue to sell, it’s likely that the iPhone 6 and 6s will also drop in price to sell off existing stock. For those looking for a similar performance to the iPhone 7 but with a 3.5mm headphone jack, this may be their best option. If you’re can afford a new smartphone and own a pair of Bluetooth headphones, the iPhone 7 may just be the phone for you.

Introducing the Mangroomer Ultimate Pro Do-It-Yourself Electric Back Hair Shaver
There’s a never-ending debate about whether to grow a beard or to maintain a clean shaven look. Some people also think that chest hair is manly. But there’s no doubt that there’s a consensus about back hair—they’re just plain icky. While some espouse having it waxed or zapped off, others say that you can just shave it off. And you don’t really need to have it done for you. With the Mangroomer back shaver, you can just do it yourself.
Can this really be done all by yourself? Lots of Mangroomer reviews on various online ecommerce websites attest to this, and they’re written mostly by verified customers. The Mangroomer comes with a lot of features that can make it all possible. In fact, the Ultimate Pro Mangroomer is the most advanced back hair shaver from Mangroomer.
What’s In the Box?
Let’s first check what you really get when you buy the Mangroomer do it yourself electric back hair shaver.
You get 2 interchangeable attachment shaving heads, and they both come with flexible necks. These attachments are designed for the extendable handle, which is designed for extreme reach and also equipped with ergonomic rubber.
It also comes with a power adapter, as the Mangroomer Ultimate Pro back shaver uses battery power for certain functions. You just need to charge the unit, so it doesn’t need to be plugged in when you use it.
You also get a manual detailing the operating and safety procedures. This is Spanish, German, and French, as well as in English.
There’s also a cleaning brush so you can get rid of the hair from the shaver more easily.
Features of the Mangroomer Electric Back Shaver
So what features does the Mangroomer Ultimate Pro have that makes it exquisitely ideal for shaving your back? Take a good long look:
The shaver head attachments lock to the handle, so what you end up with is a design that allows you to reach every square inch of your back. You can bend it at any angle, or extend it fully to reach areas that are more difficult to access.
It has the new Pro XL extension button, which locks the two parts of the Ultimate Pro in the angle you want. You can then customize the angle for various areas of your back, with an angle range of 135 degrees. What this means is that you won’t ever have to ask anyone else to shave your back for you.
You can also fold the unit flat, so it’s easier to bring along with you on your travels.
The 2 interchangeable attachment shaving heads give you a 1.8-inch wide back groomer blade. This allows you to shave larger areas and longer hairs more quickly.
You also get a bidirectional head for regular maintenance and shorter hairs. With this, you can shave along two directions instead of just one.
There’s also the Power Burst button. With this, you can get an extra burst of power to the shaver so that you can more easily trim very thick and coarse hair on your back. All you need to do is to press the button, instead of pushing down more forcefully.
The shaving heads also come with “shock absorber” flexible necks. This enables you to shave by following all the contours of your back.
The blades are ultra-sensitive. They’re made of stainless steel and are also hypoallergenic. This makes sure that the shaving process is soothing for your skin, without the usual irritants that your skin may normally have to endure.
The handle comes in a hexagonal design, which makes the grip more ergonomic. It’s rubberized too. This design is meant to boost your ability to control the shaver securely, while you’re also comfortable in handling it.
It’s also very light. This means you’re less likely to get tired holding the shaver up for extended shaving periods. It also makes it more portable too.
The battery charges up quickly and there’s even a charge light indicator. It goes red when it’s charging and green when it’s fully charged.
There’s also a 2-year warranty against any defects due to failure or manufacture. While you will shoulder the shipping costs to Mangroomer, the manufacturer will cover the costs of shipping the shaver back to you.
Comparison to the Other Models
Some say in their Mangroomer Ultimate Pro review that there’s not much of a difference to this unit compared to the more affordable Mangroomer Professional. But that’s not quite true. Yes, it’s true that they share several key features. The less expensive model does have the special 135-degree design. It also comes with a rubberized grip. It also works without a cord, it’s rechargeable, and they both have a charging light.
But the Ultimate Pro has features you won’t find on the Professional version. There’s no bonus foil head for regular maintenance in the Pro. There’s no shock absorber feature with a multifunctional flexible neck. The lock button is missing, and so is the extreme reach handle. And you won’t find the Power Burst feature either.
PROS:
First and most important of all is that this thing works. You really do get a close shave, and you can access every area of your body easily. All you need is as full length mirror, one hand for the shaver, a small mirror for your other hand, and a bright light so you can check whether or not you missed a spot. It’s very maneuverable and light, so you can just relax and get to every hair on your back. It simply is very easy to use, since if you can’t reach a spot then all you need to do is to change the angle of the shaving handle.
There’s also no pulling on the hair, and no pain. Just make sure that you move the shaver head slowly as you pass it over your back. There’s no irritation to your skin either. Since the design allows you to follow every square inch of your back, you can get a very close shave indeed.
The charge also gives you a lot of time to shave. It won’t let you get the job half-done only. After all, the wide blade gets things done quickly. And the Power Burst button helps you with the thick coarse hair.
It’s even portable too. Just fold it up, bring the extra head and the power adapter, and you’re good to go. It’s so portable that you don’t even need to find a bathroom to use it, since you don’t need even water to make it work. And sure as heck, you don’t need shaving cream.
CONS:
In fact, this thing is ideal only for your back. Since it’s so big, it’s unwieldy to use for your face. The blades also are quite wide, so it’s not quite suitable for other areas of your body where there are deep contours to think about.
You can’t even use this on your chest hair without being very careful, since it doesn’t have a guard to protect your nipples.
Some people may not be that convinced that it’s better than having someone else do it for you. Having others do it for you can be an embarrassing experience, even if you can afford to have it done professionally. Some people even find it hard to ask their significant other to shave their back. But if your spouse or partner doesn’t mind, then maybe you shouldn’t mind it either.
Consumer Ratings
By and large, just about every Mangroomer back shaver review for the Ultimate Pro gives it top marks. Just about every one finds it easy to use, and people marvel at the results. It’s no surprise that it’s a bestseller, and the most recent reviews all give it glowing recommendations.
Of course, a few people here and there will have something to complain about. One mentioned that it’s too light, and so there’s a question about its durability. Another even complained about the need to use mirrors—is there even a back shaver that doesn’t need mirrors to let you see if you’ve gotten all the hair on your back?
So all in all, people say that this is a beaut. It’s terrific—that’s very much the consensus.
Conclusion
So should you buy it? If you’re plagued with hair on your back and you’re no longer amused by the taunts and jokes, then the Mangroomer Ultimate Pro back shaver is for you. It’s very affordable, compared to the costs of other hair removal techniques. Using lasers will cost you about $600 to $900, and that’s just for one session. With the Mangroomer, it’s a one-time cost.
It simply is a wonder of a product. It’s very easy to use, and the results will be amazing. Never again will you feel self-conscious on the beach and in pool parties, and you won’t have to annoy other guys when your play basketball shirtless. And it gives you the self-confidence you need when you’re intimate with your partner. So if you have any hair on your back, get this shaver.

Types of Kindle
What are the different types of Kindle? There is the Kindle, the Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Voyage and the 2016 launched Kindle Oasis. Then of course there is the Fire, this comes as a tablet in various shapes and sizes and then there is the Fire TV of which there are two versions. Confused? It’s not the easiest product line to follow, especially as Amazon took the decision to launch their tablets under the name Kindle Fire, realised the confusion, and then relaunched the tablets simply as Fire. I want to help to clear up the confusion.
What is an ereader?
An ereader is a handheld electronic device that let’s you read electronic books and magazines. Amazon Kindle electronic readers are aimed at trying to replace the physical book. Whether this is actually possible or not is a debate for another blog post.
A Kindle will allow you to download and read books, newspapers and magazines on a specialist
screen that is designed to allow you to read for hours and hours.
A tablet on the other hand uses similar technology to a laptop or desktop, there is nothing specialist about it.
If you are a fan of reading books and magazines, this device is particularly convenient for you. Amazon currently features four varieties of Kindle units, each with a unique appearance and differences.
Learning more about each of these devices and how they differ will assist you in choosing the right device that fits your lifestyle and budget. Let’s break each Kindle down and discuss each model individually.
What is a tablet?
A tablet is a handheld mini computer that lets you read emails, go online, watch video and install apps. It also lets you read electronic books and magazines.
What is the difference between an ereader and a tablet?
I have written an in depth blog post about this ereader vs tablet. To summarise, an ereader is for books and magazines and a tablet is a handheld computer. Although by installing an app on the tablet it’s possible to access the same content as your ereader. The app downloads all the ebooks you have purchased from the Amazon Store and using WhisperSync technology, it synchronises where you are up to magically, across all devices.
The biggest differentiator though is that the screen on a tablet is like a computer screen, but the screen on an ereader is designed to mimic a book.
Types of Kindle
I have listed below the difference types of Kindle that are available to buy and for reference some of the now obsolete models. If you want a full list and specification of the current Kindle line up then take a look at my comparison chart.
Kindle
The Kindle is the baseline model and like it’s bigger brothers and sisters it features the revolutionary e-reader or eink display. This display provides a sharp and high-resolution screen designed for those that want to read books electronically. The entry level model is simply know a The Kindle whereas the other Kindle ereaders have names like Paperwhite, Touch and Oasis.
It includes a six-inch display that utilities the Amazon E Ink technology to form a 16-level gray scale image, that does not have glare even in direct sunlight. It uses Wi-Fi as the only mean of connection, and you need to be in the range of an active Wi-Fi connection to browse and download content. It is simple to use and does not require computer cables or syncing to use.
None of the Kindles include any audio functionality, something that was available on the previous generations. It’ wireless functionality makes it easy to log into Amazon to find and buy an e-book. Shop anywhere in the world, whether you are in bed, taxi or airport. As soon as you buy a book, it will be delivered immediately electronically.
The Kindle comes with an internal storage of 2 GB, with 1.25 GB available for use. This will allow you to approximately store 1400 books. It includes a powerful battery, that can last for up to one month if the wireless is off, and about three weeks if the wireless is on throughout. The device offers five controls well placed in the bottom of the display area.
Kindle Touch
Like the entry level version of the Kindle the Kindle Touch features a 6-inch E Ink screen. The main different is that this version is a touch-screen and allows swipe or tap the display, which is an easier way of navigating menu system or turn the page on your book or document. The Kindle Touch comes with a larger battery than the Kindle, which can last up to two months when the wireless is turn off and about one month when the Wi-Fi is on most of the time.
It comes with a larger space of about 3 GB as compared to 1.25 GB in the Kindle version. The Kindle Touch is advanced in term of internet connectivity as it includes a 3G version, which is much faster wehnaccessing online contents as well as downloading books, because you don’t have to worry about logging on to WiFi networks.
Kindle Keyboard
This device is now obsolete, but can still be purchased second hand. Although it features almost the same internal storage as the Kindle Touch, the Kindle Keyboard E Ink display is not a touch-screen. The Kindle Keyboard offers a five-controller and a full QWERTY keyboard for input. It also includes a two side buttons that use to advance the page while reading. It features a powerful Wi-Fi and 3G models just like the Kindle Touch model.
It comes with a more powerful battery like that of Kindle Touch model and can last for up to two months on a single charge, when it is offline most of the days. If you keep the Wi-Fi on most of the time, the battery will last for about ten days. It is important to avoid the low-coverage mobile area connections (this is what the 3G card uses)
as it will drop down to 2G standards like EDGE and GPRS. Although they still work, they consume battery power faster.
The Wi-Fi network is compatible with 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n standards and supports WEP, WPA and WPA2 security that uses a password for authentication. If you don’t know what that means, then don’t worry as it’s just another way of saying open WiFi standards. It cannot to connect to WPA and WPA2 secured network using 802.1X authentication methods, which are only really used in the workplace and does not support to connecting to ad-hoc Wi-Fi networks.
Kindle DX
The Kindle DX version, also now obsolete, is totally different than the previous three versions that we have mentioned so far. It features a 9.7-inch E Ink display compared to the 6 inch on the other models.
It features a high-contrast display, that allows for up to 50 percent contrast as compared to other E Ink displays. It includes a full QWERTY keyboard, a 5-way controller, and standard turning buttons. It comes with an internal memory of about 4 GB internal storage with 3.3 GB available for storing content and is available in 3G version.
The main weakness as compared to other is that it does not feature a touch screen, its battery can last to up to 2 weeks when the wireless is off. If the wireless is on most of the time, a single charge can last for about one week.
The battery life depends mainly on the wireless usage such as when shopping the Kindle Store and when downloading content. It should also be noted that low-coverage area wireless technologies such as EDGE/GPRS which can be called as 2G, consumes more battery and should be avoided.
Kindle Fire
This is the most advanced version of the Kindle as it features a full-color, multi-touch display. The tablet comes with a modified version of Google’s Android operating system, that allows you to download and run a wide range of applications just like any other standard tablet. Some models start 8 GB internal storage and go up to 64GB and the storage can be used for books, games, videos and music.
Its battery can last for about eight hours when the Wi-Fi connection is on most of the time and about two days when the Wi-Fi is off.
The Kindle Fire only includes a Wi-Fi receiver just like the Kindle ereaders. The operating system supports different files which includes Kindle AZW, PDF, TXT, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively, DOC, Audible, JPEG GIF, PING, BMP, MIDI, WAV, OGG, and NON-DRM ACC AND PNG.
Although this model is a bit expensive as compare to the most other Kindles, it’s designed as an alternative to the iPad or Samsung tablets rather than competing against ereaders.

In April 2016 Amazon launched the Kindle Oasis. When I first started writing this Amazon Kindle Oasis Review, I fully expected to be archiving the Amazon Voyage review given it’s specification and price point.
For now anyway it looks like the Kindle Oasis is an entirely new device. The first thing I’d like to say about this, is at the time of writing we have four Kindles to chose from and each one has various options, like 3G or WiFi only and also do I want one with sponsored advertisements on it or not?
Amazon normally get the marketing spot on, it’s why they are the giant that they are. However, I am not sure they have got this right. It seems to confuse people more than anything having this number of devices to chose from.
There are currently four models of Kindle on sale, I am not sure if this is one too many.
So with my initial concern out of the way let’s get down to the details.
What’s new with the Kindle Oasis?
The Kindle Oasis has had the battery moved to the side as you can see from the image below:
This means the device can be held with the thick bit in the palm of your hand. Not only does this make it more comfortable than the other versions of the device, but it’s also the lightest Kindle to date. So reading books on the Oasis is the best ereader experience on the market.
The downside it that battery life has suffered a little but Amazon have come up with an inventive way to get around this. The Kindle Oasis comes with a case that also doubles up as a battery boost.
The Kindle Oasis comes with a case that also acts as an additional battery.
We have seen this concept used in the smartphone world for some time and now Amazon have brought the same concept to the ereader market.
Difference between Kindle Oasis and Kindle Voyage
The previous high end Kindle was the Kindle Voyage. The Kindle Oasis now sits in the category and given that it starts at $289 / £ 269 its £100 / $90 more expensive. You could buy a Kindle Voyage and a Kindle and still have money left over.
The specification of the two devices is almost identical, the biggest difference is the Oasis is thinner, lighter and comes with a cover that also charges the device. Maybe we will see prices drop over time but this is definitely high end tech that we are dealing with when it comes to the Oasis.
CLICK TO READ CUSTOMER REVIEWS
Amazon has traditionally tried to make their devices as cheap as possible, their strategy as a content creator is to make money from content. Whilst the technology in their devices can’t be faulted, the quality of the components used can sometimes feel cheap.
The Oasis feels classy, like a high end Samsung or Apple device. They don’t seem to have cut any corners here, hence the hefty price tag.
The Screen
In my opinion most electronic devices live and die by their screen. Whilst the casing on a Kindle has always felt a bit cheap, the screens are a delight. Not only does the casing feel high end the same is true with the screen.
The screen is 300 pixels per inch and it features 60% more LEDs than the Kindle Voyage. As a result the Oasis is an absolute delight to read a book on.
Ereaders feature a touch screen interface and if you’re used to using a tablet then as a word of warning an ereader is nowhere near as responsive as a tablet. It probably doesn’t need to be but I can see future devices improving massively in this area.
Software
The homepage displays the book that you are currently reading, in addition it pulls your suggestions in from Goodreads. Buying a book from the Amazon Store is a piece of cake, just a few taps and your latest purchase is downloaded to your device.
Whispersync is amazing, it synchronises your books across all devices, so if you are reading using the Kindle App on your smartphone, tablet or desktop app then you can pick up where you left off. Nine fonts are available to choose from and you can make the font bigger or smaller to suit your taste and eyesight.
Like most technology these days, it’s integrated with Twitter and Facebook so you can share your thoughts whilst you are reading.
Right Handed or Left Handed
The Oasis has an accelerometer built into it much like a smartphone or tablet. What this means is that if you are right handed or left handed, it doesn’t matter. The Oasis will detect that you have changed hands and rotate the screen. Very clever and very useful.
A case with a battery
The Oasis comes with a case that attaches magnetically to body of the ereader. Very similar to the case that comes with the iPad. As well as protecting the Oasis, the case doubles up as a battery, this helps to overcome the issue of a smaller battery than the one you normally find in the Kindle.
Once the cover is attached the battery in both the Kindle and the cover is charged at the same time, when not on charge, the battery in the cover is used before the battery in the Oasis.
There are three choices of cover available, walnut, merlot and black. One of the major drawbacks is that you won’t want to have an Oasis without one of these cases, what makes technology fun is being able to personalise it with your own accessories. I can’t see many third party manufacturers producing a case for the Oasis.

Video Baby Monitor Security
Are you among the thousands of people using baby video monitors? If the answer is yes, then you must be aware of some of the issue raised in the news recently. There has been reports that several baby video monitors were hacked and used by hackers to talk to the children and view them. Hackers proved this by broadcasting some of the footage on several websites. This action has brought panic among several nurseries who readily use them on a day to day basis. Although this is concerning there are things that you can do to stop this from happening. Read on to find out what can be done to improve your video baby monitor security.
To ensure security of baby video monitors, you must first ensure all online services are secure. The hackers in the UK must be collaborating with other people from others nations as footages from the UK baby video monitors were broadcasted live on a Russian website. This action has brought tension among people whose monitors have been hacked. Their hacked monitors show all activities in their homes particularly in their baby’s bedrooms, with a recent stream showing a child’s bedroom in Birmingham.
This has become not only a parent’s concern but something that has worried the whole IT industry. Several IT Security companies have demonstrated how this is possible. Different baby monitors were tested and it seems to be that hackers used the same method to gain access to them.
Ways of accessing baby monitors:
If you own one of these baby monitors, then it is worth knowing how these monitors have been compromised. The main way that hackers compromised these monitors is because it never asks for a password in their default installation. Anything that is connected to the internet without log in passwords mean they can be easily accessed by anyone who knows their default passwords.
Mostly, the baby video monitors are accessed via an application on a smartphone or even a website. More so, the default passwords are published on the internet, mainly to help consumers who may have forgotten the password, but also hackers are publishing the details to allow other hackers to take advantage of the situation.
The frightening part of this news story is that these monitors were used by hackers to monitor their owners activities and even to talk to the children. This was a case in the state of Washington. KIRO TV reported that a US woman, whose identity was withheld for personal security complained to them about how their wireless Foscam IP camera was hacked. She said her son complained to her about voices in his room but she never took it serious at first, as she assumed those were voices from outside. It was not until when she heard a woman’s voice from her son’s room that she had to check it out.
She got shocked realising that the voices were actually coming from the camera. Someone had hacked their system and had been talking to their son for a month. The voices could tell her son when his father was coming to his room and when his mother was also coming to his room. The hackers had taken full control of their wireless Foscam IP camera twisting it to any direction they want to see. However, they could only talk to the child but he couldn’t talk back.
KIRO 7 reporter, Kevin McCarty explained that it possible that the system was hacked after hearing from the wireless Foscam IP Camera Company. The bad thing is that it was not possible to tell whether the hacker was someone from within or even outside the country. This was so because these cameras are controlled with an application. Such application are compatible with not only smartphones but also laptops. However, there was nothing that could be done by then other than uninstalling the camera from their home.
Another family in the same state was surprised to hear creepy music from their Foscam baby monitor. The only thing you can do in such cases is to check which IP addresses have been accessing your Foscam. This will help you determine whether or not your camera has been hacked and being controlled. Each logon to the camera is logged so in the first instance you should check if someone has been logging onto your monitor at unusual times. This will help to ensure your home has not been breached and all your activities are being monitored.
The family, living in Minnesota that looked at the log files and they discovered that the IP address used to access their camera came from overseas, Amsterdam to be specific. The site used to access their home camera had thousands of streams coming from many other cameras from as many as 15 countries. This site was later discovered to be Insecam.com which has been streaming footages of many private Foscam IP cameras. All these cameras had a default password which allowed intruders access to them. The site has reported more than 152 countries which have been affected. Intruders are able to spy people’s offices, swimming pools, restaurants, bars, shops, swimming pools and gymnasiums.
This raised an alert to Foscam Company concerning the security threats caused by their default password camera modes. They started manufacturing new cameras which could allow users to change the default passwords to their own personal passwords which could only be known to themselves. This made it hard for those hackers who only accessed the cameras through their default passwords. However, as noted by the Washington family, they had set passwords and even usernames but this never protected them. The couple claimed that their camera had a username and a password but was still hacked.
Are you thinking of doing away with the Foscam camera system and maybe installing another baby video monitors for your home? Then you must be very keen. Many other cameras have also been reported to be exploited by voyeurs with a recent case in Kansas. This shows that almost all the baby monitor system are very vulnerable to hacking. A US mother, Megan Klaassen, reported that her summer infant brand wireless IP camera had been hacked. Megan got worried when she knew that someone had been watching over her napping her 3-month old son. KWCH 12 reports that Megan Klaassen had a password on her baby monitor. The hackers must have easily accessed her password through the internet as she uses an open network Wi-Fi connection in her home.
Megan explains how she removed the camera system from her home. She had to return the wireless camera system to the store and got another one without wireless capabilities. She said it is very important that if your home has a Wi-Fi connection, then consider securing the connection with passwords. This will prevent internet hackers from accessing your homes’ internet-based equipment. She farther cautioned all the mums to take the need to secure the cameras very seriously. She stressed the need for passwords and constant checking systems to make sure no intruders have hacked them. However, Megan Klaassen insists that there should be more help concerning hijacking of baby monitors other than just passwords and usernames.
Many families have been unnerved by these privacy intrusion issues. Obviously, no one will feel safe knowing all their actions are being monitored.
Security considerations
The increased hacking incidences have called the help of many security companies. For instance, Paul Ducklin of Naked Security came up with certain security considerations which include:
• IT-savvy: Paul explains the need of consulting the help of an IT friend to check on your system incases you suspect security breaches.
• Passwords: Paul explains that passwords will make it hard for your home monitor system to be hacked. He farther explain that there is no need of replacing your monitor system just because they have been hacked but instead make use of strong passwords.
For strong passwords, consider using both non-sequential numbers and letters. This was a message for all those using webcams and baby monitors from the UK privacy watchdog Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). They stressed that passwords should never be names of pets at homes, date of birth nor the names of children. This will only make it easier for hackers to guess what your password is to access your monitor system.
Consider your Wi-Fi routers security
Turn off the wide area network options
Most people will configure their Wi-Fi routers through web browsers. You should start by turning off the wide area network option in either remote administration, remote management or setup via WAN so that your configuration screen will be accessed only from within your home. This prevents anyone on the internet from accessing your Wi-Fi network to hack your monitor system.
Usernames and passwords
It is important to note that usernames are not of great importance. What matters most in protecting your Wi-Fi router is the password. Make sure you have a strong password that will be used to administer the router.
Strong passwords cannot be easily hacked which means that if the router cannot be compromised then it makes it more difficult for the camera to become compromised.
Another good tip is to change passwords on a regular basis. Consider using both non-sequential numbers and letters to make very strong passwords for any of your home internet based systems.
Control over Wi-Fi
Controlling who can access your Wi-Fi network connection will also be of great advantage. There are three Wi-Fi security levels: open (no passwords), WEP and WPA (1 and 2). Among the three, it is very clear that you don’t have to use an open security access level for your Wi-Fi router as anyone can connect to your network. Also WEP security levels sound secure but there are know issues which means it is easy to crack a WEP password within no time. No one will want to have a false sense of security in using a WEP password for their Wi-Fi routers.
Update routers
Make sure your router is always up to date with the current software. Download the latest firmware for your router from your vendor’s website. Make sure you always access your vendor’s website reading through all the support articles about routers and their security measures. Read about other people’s comments and concerns. Being up to date with the current firmware will help keep your Wi-Fi network strong. This will prevent hackers from breaking into your network to access and change your settings so that they can start monitoring all your activity.
However, caution should always be taken regarding what firmware to download. You will need to know this model number and it is usually on a sticker somewhere on the router. This helps you to download the firmware compatible with your router’s model.
Use a password on your webcam or baby monitor
Most webcams don’t have passwords and neither do baby monitors. However, make sure your webcam or monitor has a password to protect it from hackers. Usually, webcam passwords are difficult to set. One can either check on the vendor’s support forum or else visit the vendor so that they can show you how to set the password. Strong passwords are recommended on cameras.
Conclusion
In conclusion, if you have a baby monitor, then you should consider the following four ways to make them secure:
• For strong password, use both non-sequential numbers and letter which are hard for the hackers to guess. It is risky to use default passwords on your baby monitor as these passwords can easily be found on the internet.
• Keep up to date with software used on your baby monitor system. This will improve the security of your baby monitor system, as updated software will make it difficult for hackers who have been used to the previous software.
• Secure your router, since your router is what is used to connect to the internet, make sure they have strong passwords. Never use default passwords on such devices. Also make sure your router software is always updated.
• Turn off unused connections
Turning off unused access points will help enhance your baby’ monitor. You can also consider using non- internet- based device. Such devices will protect your baby monitor from hacking since hackers cannot access they are connected to the internet.

OnePlus One Review – The Most Awaited Smartphone
Almost none of us are completely satisfied with our smartphone. There has to be something or the other that we wish our phone could do better, which only shows that we did compromise, at least to an extent, when we made our purchase. Trying in vain to find a phone that has everything we desire, we end up settling for something that has 95 percent our preferred features, and thus that never meets our satisfaction fully. Every now and again a device emerges and we need to make very little compromises. The OnePlus One launched and this low cost handset is packed with a crazy amount of features for the price. In this OnePlus One Review I take a look if a handset at this price point can take on the big boys like Samsung and Apple.
Specification
OnePlus has an interesting motto, “Never Settle” clearly reflects the mission of the Chinese company, its producer, that is to create and sell completely perfect smartphones. Its very first creation is One, which is a great looking gadget with amazing specifications and a customizable firmware. The best thing is you can get it for just $299 or £219 (around AU$320), free of contract, and unlocked, and this costs you less than what a Google’s Nexus 5 would. If you find this hard to believe, particularly keeping in mind that it has been created by a company that has no official track record, then let us get to learn about One a little more, before you can come to any concrete conclusion.
The OnePlus One phone looks nothing like any other phone that you could get for this price point. Its polycarbonate build, beautiful arched back, stylish frame, and a great spec sheet makes this look like it should cost twice the price. This is only because many other companies are actually selling such a product at twice the price.
Now you must be wondering then how is it possible for such a new brand to sell such an amazing product at such a low price compared to its competitors. Well, it is simply because the company does not intend to make money to begin with. The only track record of One that is worth mentioning is that its founder and also a large part of its workforce comes over from a very renowned brand Oppo. One is offering its great creation at such low rates only because it first needs to prove, needs to show what it is capable of producing.
One has amazing features that any smartphone user is sure to fall in love with. It has a 5.5-inch display, and is 0.6mm thicker and 1.7mm taller compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. At the same time, it is 6 grams lighter and 4mm narrower than Samsung’s 5.7-inch phone. If you have not ever used phones bigger than Nexus 5 or Galaxy S5, then this phone will help you stretch and use those hand muscles you perhaps never knew even existed. Even if you have the habit of using big sized phones then using the OnePlus will be a very comfortable experience. Its arched back makes it easier to hold the phone, and its blunt edges will allow enough space for your fingers to rest easily.
One has a pixel density of 401 ppi and a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS LCD panel. Now the very careful observer, those who have immense knowledge in this sphere will perhaps say that it is not as great as are gadgets like Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8, but the fact is without going by numbers, if you actually use it, then you are sure not going to find any difference. In fact, many people like the display of One far more compared to that of other popular smartphones, and its better than Nexus5 as it makes use of an IPS panel. The viewing angle of One is one of the best that you will ever come across, it matches the quality of M8 and leaves GS5 far behind. Even though it is not bright enough like GS5, but it still is quite good. In fact, its whites are whiter compared to the three other phones already mentioned. Moreover, its colors are natural and thus, you will enjoy viewing it more, at least more compared to the overblown Nexus 5 and saturated GS5. Just in case you do not like this, no worries, you have the option of customizing the color saturation, contrast, and intensity to match your preference.
The display screen rises a little above the rest of the phone’s frame and thus you get to enjoy a more exposed screen, compared to what you might have so long used. Your screen will stay protected all thanks to a slab of Gorilla Glass 3, so no need to worry about your pens, keys, or other such objects getting in touch with your phone. The phone has a 5MP front-facing camera that you can find close to the sensors and earpiece, and there also are three capacitive buttons below which you can turn off whenever you wish to use the virtual soft keys.
On the left side of the One phone is a micro-SIM slot and a volume rocker, and on the right is a power button. On the top, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack, and close to the micro-USB port located at the bottom are twin speaker grilles. Some buyers might be disappointed with the fact that the phone does not have any micro SD storage slot, but then you just need to spend $50 or £35 more and you can enjoy the 64GB version. If you would buy another phone offering you that much space, then you would have to spend another $200 £150, so this indeed is a great deal.
The beautiful curved back has a 13MP camera with dual LED flash, logos of Cyanogen and OnePlus (the Cyanogen logo would not be present if you own the Chinese version), and a noise-canceling mic. You can change the back cover so this gives you the freedom to alter the hardware to an extent. So long, only five plates have been mentioned with different textures and/or color, but at the time of launch, only two amongst these will be made available. Removing the back can be a little difficult, so you need to practice enough to get perfect. What you will have to do is eject the SIM tray and now using your fingernails try to open the back. Once you succeed, you surely will feel as if you have done a great task, a great sense of achievement.
The One will have two variants – one for the entire world, and one specifically for China. OnePlus has tried to include as many connectivity options as it could with penta-band HSPA+, quad-band EDGE/, and seven LTE bands. So, US readers can use it on T-Mobile or AT&T but not Sprint or Verizon. Users based in the UK can use the handset on any of the major networks.
Software
If the features so long mentioned were not enough to lure you, then the fact that this phone offers a far more customizable Android experience than what almost 99 percent of users are presently enjoying, will certainly increase your interest. The reason behind this being that OnePlus is an exclusive partner with CyanogenMod, so its first phone has the firmware included.
So, what is CyanogenMod? It has a custom firmware based on the ASOP (Android Open Source Project) and it allows more opportunities to experiment with themes, icons, settings, and almost everything that an android experience includes. Cyanogen is in fact amongst the most popular third-party firmware in the Android world and can be installed on many devices, but with One, it offers you a far better experience since it is built in into the phones. As CyanogenMod was able to work with the hardware from its early developmental stages, it includes various optimizations that you will not get in other phones.
Initially, it will not look different from usual android apart from some style changes like buttons and icons. But the reality is different, and you shall experience them once you start using the phone. There are many new features with tweakable settings that you will find everywhere. Many people just need an inexpensive phone and are not interested in making changes to the android setup, and the best thing about CM is that it will match your taste as much as it will suit the style of power users who are so keen in customising.
There are many different types of CyanogenMod themes you can select from, all thanks to its modding community. Do you somehow like Samsung or LG’s interface a bit too much, no worries, just visit the Themes Showcase app, and download anything you desire. Even though all of them are not completely perfect, but they certainly will allow you to enjoy some familiarity that you are completely used to. You can even download various fonts, wallpapers, boot animations, and sound packs.
The One has few capacitive keys that you will find right below its screen, but whenever you want just deactivate them and use the soft buttons instead. This might not be a great idea for those who wish to make the most of the available screen space, so you can just let things be the way they are and continue using the buttons.
You may even customise the status bar as per your preference to see the battery percentage, the clock, and notifications for apps like Gmail, and so on. You can also simply slide your fingers to the right or left on the bar and adjust the screen brightness, or you may double tap to reach to activate sleep option.
If you do not like the way tiles look in your quick settings menu and want to change that then simply hit the plus icon you will find at the top. Instead of using a two-finger gesture to reach the menu you may even pull down on the right side of your status bar and get there, and if you pull down on the left you would reach the standard notification bar. Furthermore, you may even select and change the shortcuts that appear on your lock screen, and the quick launch shortcuts that you get to see while you slide up from your home button.
The One makes thing more interesting by allowing you to use gestures to activate different things on your phone. Even though this is not customizable, it is enjoyable for sure. Just double tap and wake the gadget, make a V motion and you activate the LED flashlight, make a circular gesture and you reach the camera, and move your two fingers down/up and you turn on your favorite music. Even though these features are extra sensitive on the pre-released gadget, it perhaps will be fine-tuned by the time the date of the official launch comes nearer.
Yet another very interesting feature of the One phone is its great voice recognition. CM offers some modifications that allow you to enjoy customization. Once the gadget gets used to your voice you just need to say “OK OnePlus” “Hey Snapdragon” and activate Google Now or any app you want.
The Camera
There are many interesting features offer by Nexus 5, but its camera surely is not that appealing. The OnePlus One phone contrarily offers a great 14-megapixel camera with six elements lens setup, Sony sensor, and f/2.0 aperture to allow you take great low-light photographs. Its front facing 5MP camera also allows enjoying every click you take.
The camera app is something special created by the CyanogenMod Team. It has three round buttons on the side using which you can take panoramic shots, videos, and stills. At the top there are some scenes, some settings, and a toggle to reach the front-facing camera. Apart from the night mode, landscape, HDR and some other options, the One also offers interesting scenes like theater, party, sunset, and snow. So if you like experimenting with your camera you surely will find this a lot interesting, even though the auto mode itself is enough to take care of most scenarios on its own. But if you want to do it yourself then just swipe your finger down or up on the viewfinder.
As far as the camera performance is concerned, it is pretty decent. The colors here look more natural than on Nexus 5, but they are yet not as saturated as should be. If you like perfect images, then you might find the sky not looking as blue as it is, and some images taken also shows the problem of soft focus. In the low-light shots, the larger aperture does not help the camera capture enough light as the details level is not quite like what the Nokia Lumias (high-end ones) or HTC One M8 offers. It also makes a lot of noise. If you compare it to the N5 it uses a similar amount of light, but you will enjoy a better white balance at night with the One camera. Last but not the least, the HDR mode of the gadget is way too strong, and it highlights the shadow so well that the end result looks a bit weird. It will not be wrong to say that camera is one such area where octet popular devices do a better job than One, but it still is slightly better than the Nexus.
However, One’s built-in editing software does deserve mention here, just in case your pictures need some post-production correction. If you find the HDR effect way too strong then you may change the filter strength or even switch to another type of preset style. You may even change the brightness, sharpness, focus, and color. You may select some areas of the images that you can tweak. The phone also offers many filter options that you may consider using.
Video recording of the phone is great with 20 Mbps bit rate and 4K resolution. As One does not come with optical image stabilization, CM tweaks the software to offer better results. This does reflect in the results, as the footage looks a lot smoother. Even though it is not possible to replace the hardware but this software enhancement does make a good difference. The front mics pick sound better compared to the rear ones, and one needs to remember this while shooting.
Battery Life and Performance
It will be difficult for any one to believe that a phone like One, at just $300, offers almost everything that you get from an Oppo Find 7 and Nexus 5. You, in fact, will not be able to move technically faster than this, as the phone comes with a 578MHz Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB RAM and a 2.45GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801. Until, somewhere later this year, the snapdragon 805 hits the market, this certainly is the best silicon offered by Qualcomm. But how is this beneficial to you? Well, this ensures a very smooth and quick experience. The gaming experience here can be a little sluggish but that is only for very close observers, else you will have a nice experience here too.
With CyanogenMod’s firmware, you can alter your performance profile and reach the modes ranging from power conservation to battery sucker. If presets are not something you like then you instead may manually adjust the settings. Doing this, however, might not be a great option, unless you are really sure of what you plan to do.
There is a problem with the soft audio output in the earpiece and also the external speakers. The conversations may sound softer than ideally should be, and hearing music can also be a difficulty unless at full volume mode. However, on using headphone the problem is solved, and in fact, you may need to even lower the volume for a comfortable hearing experience.
The battery life of the phone is pretty good. One comes with a 3,100mAh non-removable battery that is slightly smaller than what you find in Note 3, and a little larger than that present in One M8 and GS5. If you use the phone the entire day, you still perhaps will be left with about 5-10 percent battery at the end of the day. This usage includes checking email, making calls, social networking, and playing games for a while. So, it roughly gives you a 10 hours battery life, which might not be the best, but is quite good, more so for a $200 phone.
The Competition
Already those who have heard about OnePlus are keen on buying it. This will make it difficult for the company to meet the demands, and this is why, to begin with, OnePlus will be available at an invite-only basis. First, the 16GB option in white will be shipped, and this will be followed by the black ones. As for those who are still waiting for an invite, you may get them anytime soon.
The One phone at launch will be available in 16 countries, Belgium, Austria, Canada, Hong Kong, Finland, the US, the UK and others. The device that is closest to its price range is Nexus 5, which is available at $349 or $399. It is available unlocked, has native Google experience, but its spec list is not as great as One. If you are interested in regular updates then the Nexus 5 can be the right option for you, but CyanogenMod is known for offering updates quickly, and as the ROM is placed in this device, the chances of you getting regular refreshes are higher.
To Conclude:
With all the amazing features that it offers, OnePlus One should likely not be this inexpensive. It looks great, feels amazing, offers a great performance, and it does not look like something created by an unknown company. No matter how it sells, it certainly will show the world and the industry how great an affordable phone can be. It is better than Nexus 5 in almost every way, that too at such a competitive price. The OnePlus One phone, even though it is trying to be perfect, it is not for everyone. Many might not like its big size, or non-removal battery option, or low storage capacity. But then what more can you expect of a $299 worth device, particularly one that already is offering you most features that far pricier smartphones give. To conclude, it will not be wrong to say that the OnePlus is an almost perfect phone, even if it is not fully perfect, it is better than many well-known brands sold at higher ranges, so is certainly worth it.
