@rarlkove’s DTIYS was a perfect drawing to get my creative spirit flowing, so here my version! I took an awful lot of liberty on the original, but I couldn’t resist- Their art inspired me to revisit an old tarot idea I had so I ran with it haha

wow whitepine 7 was SCARY. i just loove how the detective is written, he is that scary because he feels realistic. he genuinely believes that he's upholding justice by harrassing her. the reason for his suspicion on her is clearly her neurodivergence; he saw her being slightly different from others on the first interrogation and he mistook his ableism for a gut feeling, then proceeded to interpret every single one of her actions through the lens of suspicion. her face was too impassive, her voice was too monotone, she does not act normal, she doesn't even care, she is not normal, she is bad, suspicious, a murderer. as soon as he felt the discomfort of ivory not looking upset (the right way), even if she only knew mysticat for a day and had no reason to grieve, nothing, nothing could clear her in his eyes. if he were less zealous, then maybe the lack of any evidence would make him simply deem the case unsolvable and give up, but he clearly works for the idea, believes strongly in justice and protecting the people. he's obsessed and doesn't even know it. he beat her up and probably thought himself a warrior of justice.

The most underrated yet important character in all of Star Wars must be Shmi Skywalker, actually.
She's the catalyst of everything, yet I see so few fics where she's actually a character on her own. More often than not she's just in the background or not even mentioned at all... And if mentioned she's dead (which, fair, she did die in canon quite early on. But still).
She carried Anakin without even knowing how she became pregnant. She said to Qui-Gon there wasn't a father, yet at start I wonder if she was scared of not knowing how exactly she became pregnant? Was she fearing Anakin to be result of rape? Was she instead closer to the force than we've been led to believe and she instinctively knew Anakin was borne from it? So much interesting possibilities.
She's so important yet so nebulous at the same time... Apart from TPM in AOTC she's mostly just talked about by Anakin, Cliegg, Owen... And then Anakin gets to speak to her for a few seconds before she dies. We know next to nothing of her years without Anakin. Was she happy with the life she led with Cliegg? Did she marry him just to escape Watto? Did she love her new family or did she content herself with them because she couldn't be with her son?
And even without taking into account all of this, her existence is the catalyst of everything that happens to Anakin in canon. She is the one to encourage Anakin to go away from Tatooine and become a Jedi, even if she feared for him everything was better than the life of a slave like her (and further what if, would she give Anakin away still if she was not born a slave? I don't believe so. Even her status of birth is the avalanche of all the events in canon). Anakin comes back to save her and he fails, which is, arguably the most important event in all canon. Had Anakin managed to save her, would he still go towards the path he took? Would everything be changed irrevocably? Anakin losing her and slaughtering the village is the first instance where he touched the dark side.
Padme is also interviewed in this. She witnessed Anakin's pain about his mother, she saw his anguish. Do you really think that without that emotional closeness they would have still got together? I don't think so... But if they did would they get married right away? I believe not. Shmi's death heavily surrounded those choices. She's literally the ghost in the room. I believe that Anakin was also in such a state in the battle of Geononis that saving his mother might have given him more patience (or even more cockiness but that's up to you).
Her death and specifically Anakin's dreams about her death, are also the reason why Anakin was in a mind set of near collapse in the majority of ROTS. He knows his dreams can become reality, because he already witnessed them come to life. His determination to save Padme at all costs is a mirror of the failure of saving his mother from death and so he cannot fail again. He goes to lengths a person that was not on the brink of emotional and mental breakdown wouldn't even think of.
Anakin's bond with Obi-Wan? He tries so hard to make him proud as a Jedi, because he wants his mother to be proud of him and he projects it into Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan's approval of him as a Jedi would mean his mother didn't make a mistake letting him go and her faith in him would be true. Anakin just wants to be the Jedi his mother wanted him to be, and stubbornly clings to the idea that he must remain a Jedi even when he really should have recognised that life was not for him.
Palpatine manipulating him so easily? Result of Shmi's death. Palpatine knows what happened on Tatooine and he uses it as leverage towards Anakin (see scene where Anakin kills Dooku). For Palpatine Shmi's death Is Christmas come early. Her death is proof that Anakin can turn to the dark side, that Anakin can fall if pushed hard enough. There's a theory I could totally believe: Anakin's dreams about Padme's death were induced by Palpatine, inspired by what happened with Shimi... It's all coming back to her.
Shmi's life AND death are the catalyst of everything and I wish we'd get more of her canon wise and fanfic wise.
