An old friend of Duncan’s is being blackmailed after failing a temptation test set up by her husband. It’s interesting to see this kind of thing being portrayed as a novelty back in 2000, when we’re now in an era where blokes are told by TikToks and YouTube videos to “test” their partners in a multitude of messed-up ways. With just as bad results as those that happen here. It’s an even darker episode once you realise that the “cheater” was extremely drunk and therefore unable to consent to the sex her husband set up.

Get this, so he came to Chicago on the trail of his father's killer...
Someone recently introduced me to Due South, a 90's show about a Canadian Mountie and Chicago Detectives solving crimes together! I'm really loving it, (and definitely like BOTH Rays) we just crossed into S4! (MOUNTIE ON THE BOUNTY WAS GREAT)
I am OBSESSED with the lighting and camerawork in this show!!!!!!

16.29 Wheels (Part Three)

CONWAY: Have you spoken to many PCs, lately? I have, and I know what they’re saying. MANION: Really? Then tell me, Derek. What are they saying about the Crime Car? CONWAY: Sorry? MANION: How do the PCs at Sun Hill view Mr Brownlow’s bright idea? CONWAY: Oh well, I’m sure they’ve embraced it with the same amount of enthusiasm any of the other of Mr Brownlow’s initiatives.

BROWNLOW: Good news, Derk? CONWAY: Ah, yes. They’ve found the Crime Car. BROWNLOW: Found it? I didn’t know they’d lost it. CONWAY: Oh, didn’t I tell you? It was towed away by the council.

PROCTOR: I’ve just had the biggest bollocking of my life. HAGEN: What for? PROCTOR: Doesn’t matter, does it? I cocked up again. HAGEN: Well, we all do that. PROCTOR: Yeah, not as much as me, apparently. HAGEN: Says who? PROCTOR: Mr Deakin, Sergeant Boyden, you… HAGEN: I don’t think you’re any worse than the rest of us. It doesn’t matter what I think. It doesn’t matter what anybody thinks. PROCTOR: Yeah, I’m not going to get very far if no one rates me, am I? I mean, you must care about what people think about you. HAGEN: I did. You should have more confidence in yourself, Tom. You’re a decent copper. I know you’re a bit different. PROCTOR: What d’you mean? HAGEN: You’re not full of all that macho bull. You know, like Smithy and Boyden. I know you’ve got… sensitivity. You shouldn’t try to hide that. You shouldn’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd. Tom—don’t pretend you’re just another bloke. PROCTOR: Are you calling me a poof?
Oh Vicky I love you. And Tom… you were so close to getting it.

MANION: Is this your Crime Car? BROWNLOW: It was. MANION: And you thought you’d have it for three months.

CONWAY: Never mind, Sir. Could be worse. BROWNLOW: Hm? CONWAY: Well at least the wheels haven’t fallen off.
I remembered this episode so fondly and while I didn’t hurt from laughter this time like I did the first time I saw Tom drop the light out the car window, the writing is still A+. Richard Stoneman is easily my favourite TB writer and it’s because he can write excellent humour alongside perfect characterisation and just enough darkness to make the light shine brighter. He always writes Derek (and the old marrieds) so well. And all the other characters.
Vicky continues to be the best person at Sun Hill. And Tom is… Tom. I think there’s a bit of an issue with the overall writing of his character arc, because we’re being told that he cocks up all the time, but we haven’t actually seen him cock up that many times. Put his foot in it, absolutely. But the only really big cock-up was getting the address wrong in “Out on a Limb” which was more than two years earlier. Compared to John and Tony killing people, Luke and Rod getting people killed, everything Jim did recently, Jack and Rod getting arrested in France, Cass losing a gun and Liz and Duncan losing a prisoner (and all this just in the last couple of years) Tom is cop of the year. And he only cocks up here because Chris’s put unfair pressure on him to make an arrest, regardless of the situation, and then he’s unable to get the information he tries to get because of CAD being down. I mean, if Chris wanted care and due process, he shouldn’t have insisted that Tom make the arrest, no excuses, on threat of a bad performance review.
I think the conversation with Vicky suggests for the first time that it’s not Tom cocking up more than anyone so much as his colleagues singling him out for being different, and we have seen how much he feels on the outer and struggles to be ‘one of the guys’ when he’s too kind and geeky for that. And the way Tom ends that conversation is perfect, because once again he’s feeling judged for who he is so he tries to do the performative macho bit but it never works with him. And honestly? I can absolutely see Tom as bicurious at the very least because he’s just so aware of not entirely fitting in and so keen to try to act like the other men in CID (and so bad at it). If nothing else, it’s an explanation for his patchy characterisation when it comes to gay stuff ;) Either way, it’s worth noting that Tony calls him a ‘ponce’ at the start of the episode, which was absolutely a homophobic slur at that time, so you can look at the scene ending as Tom feeling a kind of betrayal. Vicky seems to be on his side, but then she ends up saying just what everyone else does: that he’s different and sensitive and not like the other male cops. And perhaps, in Y2K terms, she is trying to say that it’s okay if he’s gay, but it’s more likely that she means it at face value, because if anyone at that nick is justifiably over macho cop bullshit, then it’s Vicky.
(Of course, then she goes and slips backwards again by taking up with Boyden.)
Also worth noting that Tom’s only friend in CID is gone, as of episode 13, and I think it’s very important that the person who sees him and his value is both uniform and a woman. Because that’s almost like proof to him that he has failed as a bloke in CID.
