Even if Mickey had never come back, none of Ian’s relationships in the show or even after would’ve worked out long term because Mickey is the only person that truly knows Ian and he’s the only one that Ian could ever truly be himself around.

Ian changed himself to fit into a mold of what he felt Caleb & Trevor wanted. He wanted to hide the ugly parts of his life from them. To Ian, these shiny new relationships that were separated from the South Side and his past, were a way to hide those ugly parts of his life from himself. He wanted to move on from his past and every thing that happened in seasons 4 and 5. And he also wanted a better life for himself than what he’d had, because Ian’s always been ambitious and always wanted a way out from where he was. To Ian, a relationship with a “normal” guy who didn’t grow up like him was a way to do that.

But because of this he was never his full true self around them. He was always just playing a part for them (and himself) and keeping the things he wanted hidden, hidden. Through that he was able to hide things from himself too.

But Mickey grew up with him. Mickey’s life was just as messy, if not more so, than Ian’s. He understands Ian better than anyone. He saw first hand all the messy parts of Ian and still loved him. Even with all his insecurities that stemmed from his diagnosis, Ian never felt like he had to hide himself or change himself around Mickey. He was always just himself.

Even though it’s Mickey who says “I don’t do normal, Gallagher,” the truth is - neither does Ian. A “normal” relationship never would’ve satisfied Ian long term.

If Mickey had never come back Ian would’ve continued to do this with every new guy he dated and they all eventually would’ve ended because of this. Mickey is the only person that he doesn’t have to act with. He’s always able to just be himself.

Mickey and Ian (Shameless, US): mornings before work (fluff)

A/n: Everyone seems to prefer the Ian and Mickey content so I figured why not? (Don't worry, I'm working up to other things than fluff)

It was around 4:50am, the sun just barely beginning to rise as birds began to wake and sing their songs of the morning, and mickey is standing at the kitchen counter of his and his husband's shared apartment making coffee.

They've both made the decision to go back to regular jobs, committing to a style of life that's more normal and less dangerous, more west side.

Everyday he wakes up just a little bit earlier than before the time Ian has to get up for work, so he can make breakfast and coffee for him, because he knows he'll be tired.

And every morning like clockwork Ian comes out of their bedroom, rubbing the sleep from his eyes and yawning, and comes up from behind to hug mickey and kiss his shoulder.

"How did you sleep?"

"Like I had the worlds greatest husband to wake up to, you?"

"First of all, shut your pie hole, second, it was fine." And Mickey smiles.

This banter will happen every morning without fail. They'll both get their cups of coffee and eat their breakfast, mickey will stand at the window staring out it at the tree watching the squirrels and Ian will stand with him (just to be supportive really) before he has to leave.

Mickey will kiss him at the door and will say something along the lines of "if anyone is a dick, lemme know and I'll fix it."

After Ian leaves, Mickey will go and lay back down for a little bit more sleep before he himself has to actually leave for work.

It isn't much but it's their life and they love it, they might not have it all together, but together they have it all.

i don't care if the majority of the fandom doesn't support lip. i love him. we are the same. lip is the prodigy child, the most intelligent, the one who gets the highest grades without even trying that hard, because it comes naturally to him. he knows he's smart, but he doesn't understand why so many people want to give him a bright future. he knows he is one of the best, but he doesn't understand and doesn't believe he is THE best. everyone around him tells him that a bright future awaits him, but what if he doesn't really want the bright future that everyone thinks he will have? no, he doesn't want it. he is the definition of the lyric "they told me all of my cages were mental so i got wasted like all my potential, and my words shoot to kill when i'm mad i have a lot of regrets about that" because he can't stop tormenting himself, and this will be the cause of his downfall. the smartest kid on the southside who ends up dropping out of college and becoming a mechanic. why? because his mind is his greatest enemy. lip is that person to whom everyone says "you could have done great things, if only you wanted to, if only you had put in the effort" lip is me, i am lip. nobody gets him like i get him. they could never make me hate him. i'm a lip defender for life.

so i was thinking about mickey and ian’s different ways of expressing love. people constantly say that ian is undeserving of mickey’s love because of how much louder it is, and admittedly i prefer mickeys way of loving plot-wise, but i don’t think it’s true. i think it’s SO interesting how ian’s love is softer and quieter whereas mickeys is loud and big because… it’s quite literally the opposite of who they are. hear me out.

early seasons mickey can’t have anyone find out, needs someone who is willing to love quietly. we all remember how bad ian was at hiding his crush on mickey in season one, right? and ian ISNT a quiet person about his feelings - sure he was off his meds, but gay jesus??? mickeys wedding?? but ian IS quieter for mickey. he expresses his love through head kisses and hugs and even when he goes to mexico, ian doesnt tell anyone where he's going. because ian is used to mickey wanting things on the DL. (and yes also because he was throwing his life away and wasn’t thinking)

now lets look at ian - he makes it clear from the beginning that he needs someone who's gonna loudly express their love for him unafraid. sure, he’s able to accommodate for a while with kash and mickey because he understands that being gay isn’t easy for some people, but eventually he gets frustrated that mickey can’t own up to his feelings. now you might say that mickey is a loud person who expresses his opinions a lot, but really when it comes to love, mickey hated being loud and actually struggled to tell ian himself how he felt. but because ian needs someone who loves loudly, mickey BECOMES that.

this is only one interpretation of many, but i think the parallels are fucking cool

whenever i rewatch the shameless pilot i always think about a young teenage ian gallagher either buying a porn mag or stealing one of lip's and then choosing which boobs to cut out and stick onto the folder of his secret gay porn stash like it's a highschool art project
