Device Idea
Tumblr media
I wanted to create something to do with sitting down to go along with the idea of the invention being slightly pointless and and for lazy people so I started with a chair. After seeing the image of the children with the huge shoes I had the idea of giving the chair feet so that it could walk, and from there it developed into a bipedal design with 2 longer human like legs instead of 4, and the chair being on the top. I kept the over sized shoes and thought about giving it some puffy jester style shorts to fit with them and the exaggerated style in Fable. For scale i sketched a child leg and an adult leg beside the chair so that you can an idea of how big I imagine it to be.
At this stage my design reminded me of a film I watched as a child called ‘Wallace and Gromit the wrong trousers’ which I think may have subconsciously influenced my idea, so I think it is important to mention it. There are some similarities between the wide waist areas, thin legs and large feet, but beyond that I think the similarities end.

Inspiration Continued

While looking at different clothing in the fable games I came across this image and got an idea for a device from looking at the over sized shoes.

Inspiration
Tumblr media

When I think of fable one of the things that jumps into my mind is all of the different posters advertising bizarre inventions on the loading screens like this one.
It got me thinking about making a device that could perform a normal everyday task that someone who is lazy might wish they could do without.

Asset Design
I’ve chosen to create assets for the Fable series of games because Im a fan of steampunk style things and think the games have nice visuals and art style in general.

Assignment 3: Construct a Workable Game - Castle Wrecker
Teamed with Mari, Tiina and Meg.C
We decided to create a side scrolling 2D game in a pixel art style. We thought of having animal creatures for enemies and a human/elf main character set in a castle.

Game Mod Preparation
I teamed up with Megan Castleton and after playing the demo’s we narrowed our choice down to either the space scrolling shooter game or fungus. I liked the fast paced action and re-skin potential on the shooter but also liked the story telling and decision making aspect of fungus, and after discussing with Meg we decided on going with the shooter game.
We then thought of some space themed things we could research for inspiration and get some ideas for things like ship design. Some of the things we thought of to research were: Star Wars, Star Treck, Star Citizen, and Elite: Dangerous.

We looked at the layout of the cards in a few different card games and then Tiina designed the layout for our cards and made the first one while Greco and Ben chose the stat values for the characters that we had all chosen to use. After we had the design finished and the values ready I put the remaining cards together, added the numbers onto them all and printed them out. We only made a few cards so we could begin to test the game and see how it played, and thought if  it was a real game we could release a number of cards together in the future in different expansions.

I had a few ideas about changing the layout to better suite League and moved the payload into the middle and had 2 cards on each side. League of Legends has 3 lanes: top, middle, and bottom and an off lane jungle position. I thought that this new layout would tie in better with those roles, especially if we were to make the board look like the mini map in League, that way the left side would be the top lane, middle would be the middle and the right side would be the bottom lane.
Tumblr media
Continuing with trying to get the layout to be the same as a League of Legends match layout I added in the “jungle” position and removed 1 spot from the top lane. The standard team  layout in League would be 1 player in top lane, 1 in jungle, 1 in the middle lane, and 2 in the bottom lane.
Thinking back on our idea of only allowing the pusher to attack the opposing pusher, i had the idea of only allowing each lane to attack their lane opponents with the exception on the jungler who would be free to roam” and attack any of the lanes. This would make the board game very similar to the beginning “lane phaze” of a League match with exception to the payload mechanic.
In League of Legends there are towers in all 3 lanes, but for simplicity I think sticking to having just the 1 in the middle would be better as it keeps the win condition very clear and obvious. I think if we were to have one in all 3 lanes players might get confused as to when they had won and it might clutter the board and make it a little chaotic.

New theme : League of Legends
We decided on League of Legends as it has over 100 different characters, so there was plenty to choose from and no worry of running out. Swapping to League meant that the “payload” now didn’t really make sense, so we basically gave it a re skin. It worked in a similar way but the incremental ‘checkpoints’ became ‘towers’ that the characters had to destroy to fit in with League that had differing HP values the closer you got to you opponents side of the board, getting more difficult the closer you were to victory.

This was our first idea of how the board layout would look. The players would each have the cards they are currently using placed on their side of the board in a line and the payload would be on the right hand side. To win the game the player has to move the payload all the way to their opponents side of the board. The path of the payload is broken up into increments by gates that would have a certain amount of health points that would need to be removed by attacking the “face” of the opponent. This adds more strategy to the game  and prevents one player from rushing the payload all the way to the other side, and sticks to the Overwatch theme as there are gate checkpoints along the payload’s path in that as well.
Tumblr media
We then had the idea that instead of attacking the opponents “face” to move the payload along, the players would have to choose a card to do the pushing for them. The card in the pushing position is only able to attack the opposing pusher, but can be attacked by all enemy cards, so it will be important to choose the pusher carefully.

Turning an existing game into a board game task
After a brainstorm we thought of making Overwatch into a physical version of Hearthstone. We  didn’t want to just copy Hearthstone so we took the “payload” escort game type from Overwatch and worked that into the game board as the main objective of the game. The heroes/game characters would have different attack and defense stats and have to fight each other to move the payload closer to the opponents side of the board in increments which fit in with the games ‘checkpoints’. We had a good idea of how the board would look and planned on making the Overwatch heroes and their abilities into cards but quickly realized that Overwatch currently only has 22 playable characters, which works great in Overwatch but for a card game its not very many at all so we decide to have a re think.
