there are real wolf therians...
This rant has been the topic of many therians out there, but let’s just add one to it. there are REAL WOLF THERIANS. i know this because I am one. It has taken me SIX YEARS to get to where I am today on this self journey & i know for a fact that I am a wolf Therian. Sure, there are lots of new therians who claim to be wolves just because they don’t truly know their real theriotype and there are lots of people out there who claim to be a wolf Therian because they want to look cool, but. some people really do associate themselves with a wolf spirit. Just wanted to get that out there! 🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺😊 RESPECT REAL WOLF THERIANS. (as well as other therians & otherkin) love one another because that’s all we got. ❤️

Figuring Out One's Kintype
Since we got the question a couple times today, the FAQ does have a section on this but I will type out a guide here for folks.
Keep a journal. A journal is important to have because it lets you record all of your thoughts, dreams, and behaviors. Write them down and keep track of them for a few months. As you go, cross out things that are common/ clearly human. Leave things down that could be human but also could be indicative of a preference that could be arising from one’s kintype such as a connection to the stars or an intense love for the ocean. These could be human but they could also be indicative of your kintype so mark them with a question mark or something that will indicate possibility to you. Put stars near or highlight things that are probably indicative of one’s kintype like weird cravings, astral limbs or feelings of how one’s form should be, and “odd” behaviors like maybe the need to preen or something.
Meditate. Meditation is often a handy tool. Not everyone can manage to meditate and that’s okay. But if you can, do so and record your meditations. They should reveal some things about your subconscious and spiritual beliefs/ feelings.
Chances are you started your journey of self discovery with some idea of what you are in mind. For example, someone who now identifies as a jackal probably started with the sense of being a smallish, four-legged carnivore. As time goes on, you can begin looking through your journal and make some eliminations. So the same jackal therian could say “well, I feel I am bigger than a house cat so that’s not right. I don’t feel like I have any cat-like behaviors so that’s it for felines. Hm… I do like to growl and bark though so canine sounds right to me.” Now you’ve got it narrowed down into a range of possible species or creatures.
So begins research. Watch documentaries, read articles, read myths, stories, etc. Again, keep notes on what you’re finding out and compare them to what you have discovered about yourself. Over time, you will be able to narrow it down to something that should feel right. At this time, it’s okay to start trying on a label to see if that fits. It may take a moment to click because things don’t always feel right immediately and I will discuss that in a bit. If over time it never clicks, figure out why it feels wrong and see if that gets you anywhere. The jackal therian: “well, coyote didn’t feel right. The sounds in documentaries didn’t sound right. Now let’s see about a jackal…” It may take a few tries but the better you do your research the easier it should go.
If you simply cannot narrow it down to a specific species or subspecies, that’s okay. Some folks can’t for various reasons. A couple things to keep in mind are these:
polykin/ polytherians: one can have multiple kintypes. So if you’re feeling conflicted between very different animals, consider that you might be a polykin.
Cladotherian: some people identify as all animals within a genus. These are called cladotherians. If you feel like you are all animals of one type, consider the idea that you might be a cladotherian.
Hybridkin : do you feel multiple kintypes but they are always together? Like they are distinguishable but always wrapped up in each other? Consider you might be a hybrid of these creatures and this is why they express themselves together.
Some important things to keep in mind as you are considering your identity: humans have bestowed a ton of qualities onto animals that are not actually a part of the creature. For example, male lions are a symbol of nobility. In reality, lions are not noble. They are lazy tyrants and the bullies of the savannah. If you see yourself being drawn to an animal for symbolic reasons or humanized ideals about the animal, stop. The creature may be a spirit guide or something like that, but definitely not a kintype.
Also be aware of your own prejudices/biases. You may have an idea about an animal for whatever reason that isn’t accurate. And even though the animal fits you in every way, you resist the name. It’s okay to dislike your kintype. A lot of therians and otherkin don’t necessarily like what they identify as.
I’m sure there’s probably something more to add to this but I can’t think of anything at the moment. I hope this is helpful. Sorry about the length but all of this is important. I apologize for this not being very fictionkin inclusive but I don’t know exactly how most fictionkin figure out their identities.
