Indians and our love for the underdogs…

Croatia! Yes, Croatia is in the final of the World Cup 2018. Not the big bully Brazil, not articulate Argentina, not even the graceful Germany. Beating all the odds, breaking millions of hearts, ending careers of Legends, Croatia stood tall and reached the finals of the 2018 world cup.

We cricket lovers seldom follow any football league but every four years, we go crazy for football. Crazy like real crazy! We choose giants like Brazil and Germany as our favorite team. A few belonging to the football cult may claim themselves as an ardent fan of Brazil’s Samba or a worshipper of Messi. But deep within our hearts, we support the teams like Belgium and Croatia when they ride the field with a harmonic mixture of fury & elegance and kill the legends with their strikes. No big names in the teams, and probably we may not have heard of the names of any of the players before. But a desire of their triumph at the semifinals loomed in us. France is a big name in football and the favorite to win the cup if we go by the stats, but we wish for a miracle, we wish for a fierce game of soccer, we wish history to be made and we wish a win for the Croatian team. Our head might go for the Les Bleus but our heart will stay with the wolf that fought its way through lions and tigers to face the cheetah in the final.

We have always had a weakness towards the underdogs. Why? It is because we think ourselves as the underdogs and we relate the struggle of theirs with ours and thus we cherish their success as ours. We see our reflection in them. As they challenge the Giants with determination and perseverance, we gain a little bit of self-confidence and when they win, we feel ecstatic as if we have won the game.

Croatia, we are with you! It is time to write a new history.
