This Brooklyn Heights townhouse features a bluestone deck, custom bench with built-in lighting, and ipe planter boxes. This sunny, cheerful roof garden is more exposed to the elements and windier than most ground-level gardens, so we picked a hardy sun-loving mix of junipers, crape myrtles, roses, and flowering perennials that would do well here. This co-op roof deck for a large apartment building in Midtown East, Manhattan is made for different groups of people to all enjoy at the same time. It features composite wood decking and fencing, as well as white concrete pavers on pedestals. White fiberglass planters are contemporary looking and provide a nice bit of contrast to the brown deck and fence materials. For more on this project: http://ow.ly/Pv4t50xdQOS

This Brooklyn backyard features a bluestone patio, horizontal knotty cedar fencing, a custom L-shaped sectional bench, a built-in jacuzzi, and contemporary plantings. A built-in jacuzzi is a great alternative to a pre-fab unit. It looks very high-end, and it doesn't require craning it over the brownstone to get it into the backyard, which would cost thousands of dollars and require permits.

Mum's the word when it comes to fall gardens around NYC! Even the smallest sidewalk planter, such as this one in Brooklyn, can be a delight to stumble upon. Purple and yellow make for an eye-catching fall flower color scheme, especially when mums are at the peak of their blooms. Read more about our projects on my blog: http://ow.ly/D6mL50wnlvv

This rooftop garden landscape design NYC is located in Manhattan's West Village and features metal planter boxes filled with a lush assortment of plantings that enhance, rather than obscure, the skyline views. We created a true four season garden in this space, in the sense that there are things that look good in every season, including evergreens in winter, and plants that flower in spring, summer, and fall. What a difference these custom planter boxes backed with bamboo fencing, some new furniture, and a power washing of the deck made! We recommend that people always use bamboo fencing made with canes that are around 1” thick to help prevent the likelihood of it ever bending or breaking under its own weight. This Cobble Hill, Brooklyn rooftop terrace also features chocolate brown wood-slat furniture from West Elm... http://ow.ly/wlup50v9K5o

This Clinton Hill, Brooklyn patio features custom-built wood planters, concrete-blend pavers, and a sunken deck-level planter filled with polished river stones and variegated irises. When I arrived at the initial consultation with the client, she said she was unhappy with the awkward existing layout, and the existing deck tiles were unattractive and uneven. We ripped everything out except for the existing fence, and transformed the space into a light, airy, contemporary looking backyard for the client and her family to enjoy...
